Thread: Material Preference for Character Models

Re: Material Preference for Character Models

I voted for metal but I'm starting to come around to plastic (if not the cost). Won't touch FC with someone else's barge pole.
I am old enough to remember when White Dwarf reviewed books and RPGs.

I'd vote resin every time. Metal chips, is difficult to convert and difficult to pin. Plastic is ok but has way to many limitations for high quality single models. What they're doing at the moment with the plastic characters is nice, but not a serious contender.
I know it because I buy models, not everyone's opinion of finecast is based on netwisdom
I went through 6 liche priests with mail order trying to get one that did not have a 1mm mold slip across its face
The mangler squig I spent £36 on has all but fallen over because the material has deformed so much just from sitting in my display cabinet at room temperature
Every finecast model I have bought has taken longer to prepare than a metal of the same size would due to having to fill bubbles with green stuff, resculpt minor details and file of mold lines without breaking thin components. The best FC model I have had was my Necron Vargard Obyron, but I still had to spend close to an hour filling bubbles and straightening his Warscythe (which is still not perfectly straight incidentally).
Straightening finecast is an absolute nightmare compared to metal or plastic, having to heat and cool and wait for the material to return to its original shape before you can try again can take days rather than the seconds it takes me to permanently straighten a component in either of the other two mediums.
The detail in finecast models is not noticeably greater once primed and painted
Brush on undercoat also doesn't adhere to finecast very well, so you either have to use a spray, which will further obscure the supposed "greater detail" or press on with a brush-on coat that doesn't stick. I would add that I've never had a problem with undercoat not sticking to metal or plastic.

Plastic is brilliant, it typically requires almost no preparation other than filing off the odd mold line and gluing together, plastic models are also able to reach a brilliant level of detail, the recent empire griffon kit proved this beyond any doubt and the individual plastic character kits have been similarly excellent. I'm glad you are pleased with your casket, but I can assure you I was similarly chuffed with my metal one when I bought it almost a decade ago, it's the same ruddy model just a few pounds lighter, it would have been much better if they'd made a new one in plastic.

I actually dont mind any tbh. Though for my mounted characters, especially my mounted Bret BSB, i would prefer plastic or FC. The amount of times my top heavy bret BSB has fallen over due to his banner cannot be counted on both hands and feet. Infact i wish all cavalry was done in plastic. I dread to think how much the metal bret cavalry kits will cost if they decide to convert them to FC rather than do a new plastic kit though. Saying that, I have to say i was so glad they made the Green knight in FC. Gave me an excuse to get another model XD

For me hands down on the Plastic, love it then it would be fine cast only due to the price. Then metal never liked it
Just to let you know I am Dyslexic.
This means that some of my spelling and grammer will be incorrect.
    Thanks

    Or as Balerion put it,
Oh, wow. You are to language what a Hive Fleet is to biological matter and DNA. Realigning, recombining, amalgamating, recreating... perfecting.

    Plastic

Really liked the plastic empire kits they made that gave you so many options for your character.

Really wish they rolled that out for other characters
