Dark eldar have access to a pice of wargear called a "webway portal" that is basically a small blast template that can be deployed by the owning model and from then on counts as a table edge in regards to reserves.

Blood Angels' grails annoy me. I don't think they should exist, nevermind for dirt cheap. I know people who say that Dark Eldar would be nothing without our haemonculi. Well, what if instead of granting FNP or FC to one unit and being terrible in close combat, they were decent in close combat and gave both FNP and FC to everybody within 6" for the same points cost?

Thanks, so webway portals seem pretty nifty.
As for the Blood Angels' grails (which are "Blood Chalices", still a stupid name), you basically pay 50 points (75 with jump pack) for a fairly squishy IC to grant FnP and FC in a 6" bubble. It's really a cornerstone of alot of DoA lists.

Fundamentally different army, you expect space marines to be tough as nails to kill where as you expect to be able to reap Eldar like wheat. FNP is much greater benefit to a low resilience army than it is to a high resilience army because it plugs a major weakness rather than enhancing one of our strengths.

Also a blood priest or whatever their called doesn't make one of your elite choices core, which is one of the main reasons for choosing a haemy, they also don't have access to things like liquifiers.

That's backwards. FNP is more useful with a high resilience army because it reinforces a key strength and they're more likely to get the roll (vs. S6-7) and are more difficult to deal with overall. Even for Dark Eldar, the FNP is most useful on tarpit units that are already hard to kill.

Wracks aren't that great. They're okay. There are plenty of good Dark Eldar armies without Wracks. But there are very few without Haemonculi.

There's plenty of things they do have access to, most of which Haemonculi do not. That's just different. The bubble is flat-out several-times-over superior.

I play both armies, they work different is all...if I wanna kick someone's ass without thinkin ill break out the bangels, if i want to do it strategically and utilise some of the best combat units in the game ill use my deldar...stop whinging and play for christs sake...if u don't like playin against the ba bubble why not play with it? The best way to learn an armies strengths n weaknesses is to use them for yourself...stop with the keyboard warrior stuff

And you don't see a problem with that?

Gee, that way there can be something stupid that shouldn't exist in every game I play! That will make it all better, right? No. I have no interest in kicking ass without thinking, as you put it. It's boring. Taking obviously far superior options is not only boring, it degrades the game as a whole, as other approaches become less competitively valid.

FYI, that is quite possibly the last reason for taking a Haemonculus, much like the reason people take Baron in all-comers lists is not because he makes Hellions troops. Besides that, +1 to everything NC just said.

Re: Starting Dark Eldar, need advice

I'm actually in a similar situation to the OP here, having picked up a few bits and pieces for DEldar I'm looking at how to turn it into a fully fledged army.

Now, here's the kicker, I HATE the transports. Not to look at, they are awesome, but I cant bring myself to paint the things, nor can I imagine carrying them anywhere. So I'm looking at going for a WWP list. I appreciate this is far from the ideal and optimised list, but I'm also a Tyranid player, so I have the willpower to take a few beatings while I learn how to play a certain style of army.

I currently have 10 Scourges, 2x 10 Witch squads, 1x Warrior squad, 6x Jetbikes and a Haemonculus. Now my plans were to add another Haeme and a Talos, but I'm worried about slogging it out to drop the portals. Now, if I absolutely must I can look at a Venom or two, but I really dont wanna be stuck with Raiders everywhere. Vehicles aside, would Harlies work better or Wracks to babysit my WWP carriers?

I know I'm mad, and I know I should just wanna stick everything in Raiders, but assuming no raiders whatsoever, can the army work or should I just stick to painting pretty things and leave thoughts of playing with them alone?

Re: Starting Dark Eldar, need advice

Your choice of WWP escort unit depends purely on how far across the table you want to deploy. Unless you are only taking units which can deep strike (Jump Infantry) or have amazing speed (Reavers), that portal has to be down by the end of turn 1 or else you risk having slow footsloggers arriving from your long table edge. The main choices are:

    1) Haemonculus with *something* (usually Wracks as they're tough) in a Raider or Venom. This gives you 12" (vehicle) + 2" (disembark) distance covered, which should end up with the portal in your opponent's half of the table.

    2) Haemonculus with Harlequins. The Shadowseer pretty much guarantees the unit won't be shot before it deploys the portal (the more units you have in reserve, the less units your opponent has to target on the table, thus more incoming firepower), but you're stuck with a 6" movement before having to place the portal down in the shooting phase. Harlequins are also very very expensive.

    3) You don't bother.

And with 3, I mean you run a foot list without a WWP. I know, madness! But hear me out. The most extra movement you will gain is 14" with a vehicle, or 6 without. A normal infantry (or MC) model will cover on average 9.5" per turn, while a JI model will cover 15.5" per turn. Already the JI have gained extra movement by turn 2 and don't have to deal with the 50% chance of not showing. Reavers can either move up to 18" if they want to shoot (they are Eldar Jetbikes so get an extra 6" movement in the assault phase), or a massive 36" if they don't.

So, if you don't want to run a vehicle DE list, I would look at taking a non-mechanised foot list comprising of very fast units plus a few tough ones. As you play tyranids you're well aware of the hazards of running footslogging infantry across the table, but with Baron you get Hellions as Troops, freeing up the FA slot for either Reavers (best AT in the codex), Scourges (excellent at suppressing vehicles unless facing GK) or Beastmasters (very hard hitting CC unit and due to being Beasts will probably be in charge range by turn 2).

Heavy support choices come down to the Talos of Chronos (to be honest, neither are great for this, although they do pack a 3+ save and T7) and Elites aren't that great either for this kind of play (all 6" movers). HQ will obviously be Baron Sathonyx.

I would much rather run this list then the "reserve and hope" style of WWP. Would it survive in a tourney? No chance. But for friendly games, you have far more control over what you do with your units when you place them all down at once than relying on reserve rolls.

Re: Starting Dark Eldar, need advice

I think it says alot about how focussed on shooting the meta's become that BA aren't considered top tier. BA doesn't need Liquifiers, they have a bunch of ways to spam power weapons, not to mention cheap plasma. And the 'expensive' Priest can do his job better sitting in a transport (while costing the same as a Haemonculus). And he just gets cheaper the more units you have in his bubble (or rather, you're spreading his cost between more models). On top of that, Magna-Grapples, because Lash of Slaanesh was broken when it wasn't attached to a dreadnaught, didn't affect vehicles and wasn't an S8 hit.

I'd say a Haemonculus being a HQ choice was an advantage since we don't then have to take a high-price character for a HQ but BA Librarians are kinda fantastic.

    /whinefest

I have another WWP option which is going to sound crazy but it's the only use I've ever found for the unit.

    Mandrakes.

About the ONLY reason to field Mandrakes is that at some point you think an IC is going to get shot at by alot of firepower. You throw the IC in with the Mandrakes in cover, giving the IC Stealth and 3+ ablative wounds. When you get shot at, you go to ground for the 2+ cover save.

So, in a WWP list, Mandrakes infiltrate where you want your WWPs to go. First turn, you dash up with your Haemonculi (who are in transports with another squad), disembark, join the Mandrakes, drop the WWPs.

The downside here is that the Mandrakes take up an Elite slot.

However, this method does get around the Haemie's lack of Fleet.

I understand that Mandrakes also get better once they can shoot, which a joining Haeme allows them to do with the Pain Token.

Have to say thanks for the ideas guys, it certainly gives me a lot of encouragement to go ahead with the army as opposed to just painting stuff for fun!

As for HSupport, I could bear to paint a Razorwing ^^ That model is tres pretty!

Re: Starting Dark Eldar, need advice

For what it's worth, I've never had anyone call me out on using shredders as blasters. They are painted similar in my scheme. Shoot, half of my opponents can't tell the difference between a raider and a ravager since they look so similar.

My advice don't worry about conversions. If it becomes an issue, fix it then.

On Barron, I hate the lack of power weapon. Squads of 15 Hellions can lay down some splinter pain on anything but FNP termies. Here's to 6th edition my strenght is 2+ your toughness so your armor save is reduced. Mabey...

lol Malys. She's a bit of a one trick pony and smart opponents will soon catch on. For special characters you want to look at either Vect or Baron for general lists, or Duke for when you're spamming lots of units that use combat drugs. If none of those appeal to you, go generic.

I know alot has been said about Haemonculi, since they buff the unit they're with. Archon's are also appealing, alhtough they have so many upgrades available to them

Re: Starting Dark Eldar, need advice

Still, always remember that our hq section is mb the worst of the book.Dont spend to many points on it.The hammy is cheap, cheap, cheap.Okay he takes a liquifier gun and buffs a unit, but still each time that i look on the sanguinary priest i imagine how awesome the hammy could be.The archon is a good choice but he gets expensive really fast. His wargear is based around the unit he accompagnies. If you do not use wyches,so the hammy can go with them, better chose an archon with a blaster(mine never passed a single balistic role ;............).Again baron...baron...baron ;D
