@Ourobouros: Judging from past precedent, don't expect the new rulebook to solve all of the current problems with 5th edition. Instead you should count on at least as many new problems as problems solved.

@MarikLaw: Don't fooled by the Imperial galactic map. Barely one tenth of the worlds in the regions shown are actually Imperium-controlled. This is explained in the current rulebook iirc.

edit: Nothing happens on the 40k timeline because 40k is a setting, not a developing narrative. Of course GW could surprise us on this but I expect it to influence model sales and little else.

For example, the current rulebook background says there are more Eldar following the Path of the Warrior.( Phil Kelly emphasized Aspect Warriors over Guardians in the 4th ed. Eldar codex.) Result: GW sells more Aspect Warrior models.

Another example: In the 5th ed. Space Marine codex, various chapters train veterans as Sternguard in response to the desperate, dire times mentioned in the rulebook background. Result: GW probably sells more Sternguard models.

You won't have to wait very long. I'm sure that will happen right out of the gate.

There is alot of talk about marketing here. I think it's a moot point isn't it? I mean, we are or I should say most of us are going to be getting 6th edition anyways, even if they market 10 years ahead of time or if it's released tomorrow, We will be getting it. I don't see where all this "marketing" is. Unless you really know that GW exsits and visit their site (then you know about them) this marketing does nothing for people who don't know about GW and does nothing about peopel who care about GW, so really there is no "marketing".

All GW has to say is "here is 6th edition" and as I said, most of us will be getting it no matter what, being told months ahead of time or one week ahead of time.

Unless you know what 40K is, 99.9% of the people will have no idea what this is and be interested in it.

Now my question is, how can you not sell 6th editon in June espically when you hype up the VI? An anouncement about an anouncment with this clever ploy is a waste then. At least Behtesda put out Skyrim on 11/11/11 for it's release. I can't see GW hyping up VI for a release on the seventh month.

If 6th were being released in June wouldn't indy stockists know for definite by now? I tout they got a sheet detailing all the new releases in a given month and we're almost half way through June already...

    @Starchild
it's not that I'd like the emporer to finally die or the Eldar to die out... it's just the last rulebook promised much in terms of fluff development but this was never followed up on.

As a setting a lot of races are set in very dire circumstances, on the brink of extinction we are told, hanging over the cliff by just a few fingers... After 20 or so years I'd kind of like them to actually make some progress, however small. The Tau definitely seem to have expanded between the first and 2nd codexes, so backgrounds can progress if GW want them to, without ruining the setting. So for instance in the 5th ed rulebook we are told that the Golden Throne has started showing lots of 404 messages and the astronomicom has started to flicker... well follow it up! What happens when the holy guiding light starts to flicker? New imperial cults? Aliens attack in the gaps? There is potential for things to progress without anything actually falling off the edge of the cliff. For long term fans I feel this would be of real interest.

    This is brilliant.

I agree some plot development would be nice. I don't think they can keep cramming stuff into the last 5 minutes of the 41st millenium or wherever the cutoff point is now.

I just spoke with my Indy FLGS owner today, who said he was scheduled to speak with his GW account manager tomorrow. He said that he has been "finding out", about 10 days prior to release, so it isn't really unusual that he wouldn't yet know the details of an end of month release. Also, tomorrow happens to be the rumored date for
some sort of training meeting, so we might get flooded with news in the afternoon.

Eh, I don't know. I like what they did with fantasy. Maybe that will transfer over? Wishful thinking, perhaps.

I just don't want the damn game to be so mech-heavy.

Keep dreaming. Mech will remain a very key component of the game if only because it sells expensive kits! I dont think its a shock transports went up with the latest hike while a lot of other things didnt shift.

As the time line goes in the. 5th adition rule book, the Imperium is set upon from all sides, enemy numbers are growing, and the mechanicum of mars have detected and only told the high lords of terra that the golden throne is starting to break down and there is no wSy to fix it. The age of the imperium is coming to and nd, the End of Times is about to begin.

With all the tanks and fliers produced I think you can rely on 6th being as favorable to mech as 5th.

I've been predicting that aircraft in 6th edition will end the dominance of mechanized units while favouring infantry units with heavy weapons, such as Devastators etc.

This is my hope that if "flyers" do get further special rules that they somehow make DISEMBARKED infantry units a descent counter to them.
Sorry no GW I will not pay twice the $$$ to buy from retail stores in Australia and no amount of adds to the hobby, support you FLGS bulldung is going to change the fact your charging twice as much.

Well something will dominate, 40k is not balanced so you can rely on players finding the best units and gravitating toward them.

I dont see flyers making that big of a difference, GW is too conservative for dramatic change in 40k.

Mech spam isn't going anywhere, GW likes selling tank kits and they typically cost a lot relative to their points value.
Of all the threads in all the forums in all the world you had to post into this one.

6th will push Flyers, no doubt about that ,but I think the boys at G.W. are long in the tooth enough to not make them compulsory game winners. The versatilliy of Aircraft is what makes them cool. On a military/strategic note what do aircraft make neccesary, simple, anti/aircraft capabilty. I would not be at all surprised if the next step /marketing ploy will be "speciialised "Anti aircraft units vehicles/models. Say a years time once everyone is used to fyers BAM ! A new range of plastic PLANE KILLERS ! A must have unit..$ £ $ £ $ ker ching !
