Since Harry (?) hinted at a flier supplement, I kinda had the idea that the supplement wouldn't introduce flyer rules to the game - they'd be in the Rulebook. Maybe the suplement is rules for flyer only battles, with scenarios for your favorite aerial/space battles. Like "Have your stormtalon shoot at this heat exhaust of a giant necron death star while nightscythes try to shoot you down".
We both read the rumour, day and night,

Yes. That's why nobody knows about the Hobbit movie later this year.

    Oh wait.

It's not about the movie, it's about details of the movie. GW's sculpters should have seen probably anything, any creature, weapon, scenary, etc, that's going to be in the movie, in detail. Not only sketches, but the real deal. And New Line definatly doesn't want that out. The only thing we know about the movie so far is how the main characters look (exept for smaug) and some of the characters from LotW are back. We don't know how Smaug looks. The guy who sculpted the Smaug miniature (which is as certain as nightfall this evening) does. That's what they keep secret. It's as simple as that. If there is a Hobbit related release late this year (and why wouldn't there be), the miniatures should be done or close to done by now. GW could spoil a LOT of fun for people by, let's say, post some pictures of Smaug (and be in a hell of a lawsuit, of course)

If what was said some months ago is correct and GWs new secrecy policy is because of the new deal with New Line, this is the reason why.

I have just one question, what's the name of the song they used? It's epic.
"The scent of blood is on the wind, to the hunt! Bring me skulls, bring me blood, bring me glorious carnage! Glory to Khorne, the lord of battles!" - Chaos Lord Lornak

Then again, why not release it the same weekend?

It says "teaser no.1", so i'd expect numbers 2-6 from Monday to Friday, then the pre-orders to start on Friday night/Saturday morning...

While I can't quite bring myself to think that the rulebook will be released on the 23rd, I also can't understand why GW would do an announcement of... well the announcement for preorders..

WD is early, maybe it will have an FAQ booklet...... I had got myself all set for a 7th July release and now I just can't stop hoping for the 23rd. Though, GW's 'My First Internet Videos' are getting better.

Re: 6th Edition Release Date confirmed as 23 June 2012

Pre-LoTR release the models, books and painting was done in a separate studio with minimal personal with access and keycoded entry. Nothing leaked, largely because only the involved staff knew what was going on with regard to details. It was a black hole even to the rest of the studio. It is probably the same with the Hobbit release but creeping off topic there.

I think it will most likely be the pre-orders going up, just because they will want more than 2 weeks of marketing for a major release such as a 40k edition.

With regard to the starter I have heard nothing, the only thing that makes me think they could break pattern is the rumoured release of Bloodbowl later in the year. Even given they are determined to not decrease wfb/40k releases with hobbit release I cannot see them wanting to release another box game in close competition with it, and a gamesday release would make sense. Therefore I could see them moving the box set release to july, maybe a two weeks after the hardback book even if they don't do same day release

Practically every other creative company produces previews and teasers way ahead of time. Its a tried and tested technique that drives up interest. We're all already looking forward to the hobbit movie because we know that it is coming, and we've seen how good some parts look. There's an astounding amount of "making of" out there already.
Look at other mini companies. All the bits makers show greens PR renders way before actual production, to hype the release and get feedback.

Its like gw is trying to reinvent marketing. It really just doesn't make sense to me.

They're doing an announcement because officially nobody is supposed to even know that 6th edition is coming down the pipe. The purpose of this announcement was to tell the people who don't read forums (which is actually probably the vast majority of players) that something (it doesn't even directly say that it's 6th edition, even if the hint is as subtle as an Ork Warboss) is happening on the 23rd, which is when they'll officially let the cat out of the bag about 6th edition actually existing. You're looking at it with the assumption that everybody knows its coming, which even if lots of people do the company stance is that nobody does because nothing has been officially announced.

edit: It's a terrible marketing strategy but I'd put money that that's the reasoning being used.

Re: 6th Edition Release Date confirmed as 23 June 2012

I do not know a single person that did not know 6th ed was comming before that announcement today. We have all been talking about it for months. We got sidetracked by Necrons ther for a bit but apart from that we all knew. And I am not just talking about my little gaming group of 5 players. I am talking about all the people that play at local GW stores to me that I frequent reguarly, customers from 5+ stores. The staff at my main afe even gotted on board with atleast not denying that it is due, but thay are still playing that they know nothing about it. I know people that play MtG and nothing else that know 6th ed is comming even. I think this has been probably one of the best word of mouth campaines ever done. Seriously we have all knowen it has been coming for about a year if not more than. If you are not prepared then thats quite probably your own fault (but not neseseraly, I will leave a little room in there for doubt). Sure it may be Pre Orders or it may be the actual Rule Book release date. It could quite easely be ether. But as for advertising? The company relys on two things here in Australia, Word of Mouth and people randomply walking in looking for computer/console games. (Its funny when someone comes looking for the latest Video game and walks out with a Starter set and 2 armies. Happens all the time.)

I think I have made my point... I think... YaY 6th ed 40k?
I'll think of something appropriate soon enough to put here.

Cause their other business practices make sense? First company I know that responds to loss of sales with price rises etc

Well aside from the whole strapped for cash thing it is good news and it means a small group of us will be doing our usual new edition week of gaming Nice way to get to grips with the rules and play a few games, well a lot of games.

After long weeks away from the game I find out the new edition is almost here and I know nothing about what the 6ed will looks like. It's quite refreshing

I don't think you got my point. The company hasn't put anything out officially until now and therefore nobody officially knew that 6th was on its way. Yes people knew it was coming but that has nothing to do with anything as far as the higher ups are concerned. GW has had issues with rumor control for many years and one of the ways they deal with it is that they just ignore them completely and take the stance that if it didn't come from them then it's just meaningless gossip.

I think the last two edition changes were much better, people had at least a vague idea of what was coming down the pipe (a bit too much of an idea with 5th though I think, we basically had all the rules in the rumor thread here on Warseer) so they could get ready. Nobody in my gaming group or at the hobby stores in town have been interested at all because there's no use preparing for something that you know literally nothing about. I really want to get excited but I have no idea what's coming so I really can't. A while before 4th came out there was a poster in the store talking about the key changes and how they might effect people's armies. I got excited with that because I had something to think about but right now we know literally nothing and I just can't get excited about that.

Is it possible that there won't BE a pre-order? Is there a chance that GW will just go "BOOM" here it is, and slap in on the shelves after having them in stock for a week or so?

I think they might do the "Boom!" release. That would be the cool thing to do.

I am also of the opinion that you don't do a teaser of an announcement. You do a teaser of a release. We're just surprised that they are doing it and we don't know anything (for certain) about it.

Irritatingly, I'm going to be somebody's best man at their wedding on the 23rd. I won't be able to buy the bloody book until the following day, and I will have to read it with a hangover.

Agree with you Bram, though its a week sooner then I expected. On a side note, staff have been told that there would be longer lead times for big releases like this, but for 6th there hasn't for whatever reason, most likely what you said before with GW's NDA with New Line.

    Cheers,
    Rom

Can definitely agree pre orders will be 23rd as will announce existence of 6th so will give us a week as always to pre order before release. Looks like 30th for release. Can't wait
