Supposedly, even if this version is a true leak and not something made by a group of fans, it was at best from a very early playtest that could have been completly changed since.

    Ok, thanks for clarification!
This is the war-ravaged world of Warhammer, and there's only WAR!... and hammers.

Did anyone ever consider that the digital version of the rules would be available to be purchased on 06/23?

Well, historically this is true and not true.

While aircraft typically aren't nearly as effective against spread-out, dug-in infantry as vehicles (which are bigger, denser targets), its vehicles and transports that typically provided infantry formations with AA capability. They were the ones typically armed with the heavier caliber MGs needed to effectively harm aircraft. I wouldn't be suprised if certain vehicle weapons like hunter-killer missiles started getting AA mounts.

The problem is that dug-in infantry are often proof against alot of air power, but that also means they aren't moving. Keeping your enemy's infantry from moving pretty effectively keeps him from attacking you.

Has any one else gotten an invite from their local GW for a big event on the 23rd?

They wouldn't do that.. would they? It would certainly push their digital sales.

And it would also increase the number of people pirating the rules on day 1. Digital copy before paper copy when people want these rules so so very badly? Stupid decision. I mean most people will go out and buy it eventually but that doesnt mean that people won't be pirating day one if there is no paper copy.

Don't they want to reach people who don't know about Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000?

Wait a minute. I am being logical again. Oops...
Not very logical at all actually. If you have a niche market like GW does. A product in a work moving at unbelievable pace into technology, and your offering an "old/odd style of hobby" are you going to suddenly raise your spending on marketing from say 1 million to 10 million? No, your sales may go up slightly but your not going too come close to recouping the lost value of the mass marketing.

I wish all these "logical" thoughts on business had even the slightest idea of how business actually run.

I think the closest they can come is trying to cross promote alongside games like Dawn of War, and SpaceMarine. Offer a small giftcard for GW purchases or coupon. For example: save 10 or 20 dollars on the starter set (the one with one space marine squad and a set of paints alongside one brush). People who are already into 40K probably wont use it unless they play Marines already and it might get others interested. At the very least those who are interested and start will invest at least a small amount into the hobby to start up. Heck if you made it a giftcard and a small pamphlet about the starter set 2 friends who pick up the game might split on the starter set applying 2 coupons to the purchase.

Increasing user base that way perhaps, since the niche market is hard to grow where a lot of people really like technology and games

Not sure how much different pirating a digital copy is than scanning it is. IBooks have some security and I expect they would not be out there right away.

I'd heard the iBook format's DRM was pretty tough to crack, is that not true? I honestly have no idea, that's just what I keep hearing.

I think they'll release the paper version first because people will want the rules and get them however they can and then release the digital version a month or two later so that those who want it for the convenience will end up buying both.

I suppose a pirated iBook could just be a whole bunch of screenshots from the iBook, so I guess it's probably not that difficult either way.

I don't know about how to pirate ebooks (I'm innocent), but I know people who open a document and make screenshots of every page...

Re: 6th Edition Release Date confirmed as 23 June 2012

If it were me I would release the Digital copy of the rulebook at the same time as the starter set. Assuming of course there is a digital copy of the rulebook in the works. This way people who want an easy to carry rulebook don't have to buy a starter set and get models they may not want.

Of course this seems logical so it probably won't happen this way.

@tuebor: I mentioned this in the "GW Goes Digital" thread. I predict that the 6th ed rulebook will be all over the torrents as a .pdf after someone takes screenshots of the digital edition on an ipad. It's only a matter of time...

Which is totally different from every other release where someone scans the book or takes photos...? Usually before the release date, so the guy with the digital version need not bother.
Of all the threads in all the forums in all the world you had to post into this one.
