Blog of an Eternally Wandering Mind

Ok so I've tried keeping several other project logs in various sections, but my mind never focuses on one project for very long and the plogs just fizzle out due to the amount of time it takes for my mind to wander back to whatever army the plogs are covering

Therefore, I'm going to gather all my projects into one log, under the random section. That way I can just post up whatever I'm working on, no matter what it might be

So without further ado, this is what I'm working on atm. Mainly I've been build characters for my Dark Elves army, as I've had a few games recently and need some characters on various mounts.

This is my DE Master on a Manticore. I sold the Beastmaster that came with it to a friend a few years ago, so I've built the replacement rider out of parts from the Corsairs, Cold One Knights and Warriors boxed sets. In game that halberd counts as the Crimson Death.

Next up is another DE Master, this time on a counts-as Dark Pegasus. The idea behind my army is that it's a slavers force been sent into the north to bring back fresh beasts for the pits of Karond Kar, so instead of using a traditional Dark Pegasus, i simply added some CSM possessed wings to a Cold One and said that it's a Cold One that's mutated under the baleful influence of the Northern Wastes

I know it's not much to begin with but this afternoon I'm making a start on these:

What you're seeing is some 6th Edition Empire Handgunners I bought on the trading forum, destined for my fledgling Hochland-based Engineer Army and some LOTR Rangers that are going to form the backbone of my Grey Company. I'll post pics with progress soon, although knowing how my mind works, i may end up working on something else entirely...

Well, I love the Cold One conversion. If your paintwork is anything like your conversion work, this log will be a wonderful addition to the Random Project Logs section.

Second on the Cold One conversion, looks like it's going to be really nice painted up.

I found this old Games Day model while sorting through my bits box and I decided to paint him up, After giving him new weapons (I pillaged the original ones for other projects)

I painted him up with a Slanneshi sort of feel, as that's the god I'd base my Warriors of Chaos army around if I ever did one. In the meantime, He's going to be a display model when he's done. I just need to finish up his horns, the skulls, his loincloth and his sword. I'm really proud of how he's turned out, as I'm not that great at painting most of the time.

Only downside is, I want to buy an army to go with him now...

Re: Blog of an Eternally Wandering Mind

Ok, now that my uni exams are over and 6th ed's been released, it's time to focus on 40k again, more specifically my Deathwing

I've decided to scrap the old scheme and break out the Fairy Power Spray. Having given them a long saok, then scrub with an old toothbrush, I'm handing them over to my friend who owns an airbrush and has offered to help me out with the basecoats and speed up the process.

Here's the entirety of my Daethwing, crated up and ready for said friend to collect in the morning.

Once the Dheneb Stone base has been applied, my rate of finishing models should pick up considerably, which is lucky, considering how many Termies there are to paint. I aim to have them done by the end of the summer, ready to hit the tabletop when i return to uni at the end of September (they run a gaming society Tuesday evenings).

In fact the trickiest thing I see ahead of me is freehanding the Deathwing banner for Belials command squad.

    More soon folks....

Re: Blog of an Eternally Wandering Mind

Today was scorching hot, so I decided to sit in the garden, enjoy some music and get some painting done, seeing as my friend has finally returned with the airbrushed Terminators

This is how they were returned to me. Note the three blue ones which are Librarians, one for each discipline I'm planning to use.

As I sat down to paint, armed with a paintbrush, an ice-cold beer and Bob Marley on the stereo, they looked something like this...

A few hours later, I'd made quite a bit of progress. I've decided only to tackle two squads at a time, to keep my morale up (I have 46 of them to paint after all)

As you can see, they're nowhere near done yet, but I'm taking my time with them. I'm hoping to do a good enough job on them to be my display army, so detail and care is being lavished on each and every one of them

Since taking these pics, I've applied a further Gryphonne Sepia to the Crux Terminatus, followed by Badab Black, dulling them down nicely and stopping them from being the dominant feature of the models. I'm wondering whether a Gryphonne Sepia wash into the armour crevasses and joints would be a good idea or not. I might pick a model I don't like so much and give it a try.

    What do you guys think?

Re: Blog of an Eternally Wandering Mind

I was going through my boxes of spare sprues today and found some Cadians and Space Wolf sprues lying around, so I decided to experiment. The result was a small squad of Fenrisian Huskaerls to support my Space Wolves.

The Huskaerls are featured in Battle for the Fang and are essentially PDF regiments raised from Fenris to man the Fang and occasionally fight alongside the Vlka Fenryka off-world. I'm going to use them as an allied IG Veteran squad, led by a converted Commissar Lord, mounted in a Vendetta, giving me cheap scoring to dump on a quiet objective, leaving my Grey Hunters to do what they do best: crush the enemies of Russ!

I like how they've turned out, considering they were just just a simple head swap. They look like they could be troops from Fenris, while still managing to have a more uniform appearance than my Space Wolf packs (they are Imperial Guard after all). At some point I'm going to do a shop on a bitz website to get the parts for the rest of the squad. I might see if I can get hold of some cloaks to put on them too, but I'll see how the finished squad looks without them first.

What do you guys think of them?

Re: Blog of an Eternally Wandering Mind

I love sorting through my boxes of hobby things, I keep finding all sorts of old projects that never developed into full armies that keep threatening to distract my hobby-addled mind.

The latest treasure that I've unearthed is my Throgg conversion that I started before Christmas. I remember posting up a WIP on my blog but I never showed the finished model. Here he is in all his glory. Sorry for the poor pictures but I can't seem to be able to locate my decent camera atm.

I quite like how he's turned out, considering how basic a conversion it was - an Ogre Kingdoms Gorger with Green Stuff-ed scales and crown.I might spend some time on him, neatening up the details and finishing up the base.

One day he'll be part of my planned combined Chaos army (Beastmen, WoC and Chaos Dwarfs), but that's way off in the future once I get my money situation sorted, for now he's going to sit on my shelf of random models, looking pretty (well, as pretty as a hulking ugly Troll can be).
