Re: Another potential new Flames of War player :)

I have recently got the third edition bundle and when I saw this post I thought I might just lump a couple of my own questions in in case anyone could answer them!

While I have a fairly good grasp of WW2 history, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is directly applicable to the game and so I am a bit stumped as to what to go for army/era wise.
The material in the books gives a pretty good overview but I was hoping you guys might be able to go a bit in depth. I would probably be collecting two smallish armies as
while there is interest within the group, no one can quite afford to outlay much at the moment.

As such I suppose I will have to get a German force, since they can fight everything else. and I was thinking about a British force to complement them. Having never really had much of a chance to look over the briefings, how much does the
nature of the armies change from era to era (at least in terms of what happens on the tabletop)? For example, if I was to go for midwar forces, could I play early and late forces as well, or would the model requirements more or less require
a complete new force? Are the German forces in late war briefings substantially more defensive in the core requirements or could the bulk of a midwar force still fit in? I am trying to get as much flexibility for the least outlay basically, just so we can get a few games
and then we can all take it from there in terms of favoured nation/era etc.

EDIT just in case it matters to any advice, neither I nor anyone I play with have any intention of playing competitively nor getting the most efficient or powerful army - I happily use Ushabti and Skellingtons with spears!

    Cheers for any help guys

Biggest advantages you can do with the allies is that Mid-War you can have Shermans and infantry.

And late war you can have Shermans and infantry

The Soviets change quite a bit from mid to late war, it goes from 'everything and the kitchen sink!' to 'everything and for good measure, the kitchen sink as well.'

Yeah I was assuming the Soviets would be absolutely monstrous in late war!

Is it worth investing in any of the older books? Or just stick with the stuff in the forces book until more stuff comes out?
I am tempted to pick up Red Bear and Grey wolf just cause, but if the latest one "Blood guts and Glory I think it is) has
stuff for us Brits as well as our Yankee cousins then I might go with that.

Shermans and infantry eh, hmm I might just go with the Kelly's Heroes briefing from Wargames Illustrated a couple of months ago!

    It's a beautiful bridge......and it's [I]gonna[I] be there!

Red Bear/Grey Wolf are current and will be for some time they were the first books really designed with 3rd in mind. Earth and Steel/Turning Tide are older and may be worthwhile just for the everything allies/western german. Getting the newer bastone books as they come out or wait for the compilation expected come christmas is up to you. As for what is in the books my best suggestion is to check out Easyarmy.com. It has most of the briefings on it and will at least let you see what lists are in what book easily enough.

As for Era Mid/late mix well. pretty much all of the vehicles from mid are in late with exception of some of the gear that was getting seriously outdated already in Mid-war. Early war is almost completely different models for vehicles. For the most part infantry is infantry and can be used in any era though you may run into an issue of number of bases you need versus what you have.

Its approved by battlefront, they allow him to "sell" the lists in the books for $5 per book.

Was just going by memory, so not shocked I was off. Either way, it's still dirt cheap to get to play with the lists though they are missing the rules descriptions.

Agreed, if you plan on getting into FoW, it is totally worth it to spend some small change at easyarmy to pin down what you can do, and what you 'need'.

I think you'll find the 'fluff' is better known to the rest of us as 'history'. It's a good game though, hope you enjoy.
