I find it kind of funny that many people regard playing with a competitive mindset automatically relates to being a waac'er, power gamer, sucking the fun out of the game, etc, because for me and the group I play in the 'fun' side of this gaming derives mainly from the attitude of the opponent, and we're all competitive and much fun is had, especially when we also have much beer and pretzels.

I know some fluffy casual non competitive gamers who are absolute a-holes when playing a game, because they think their way is the only way to play, so they're as vocal about it as any power gamer I've ever seen and heard.

So there's no such thing as 'the one way is the only way' to play this game.

On the subject of competitive wargaming; it's not supposed to be a measure of how competitive you are, more how much you enjoy the act of gaming competitively. As someone already said you can be a WAACer and dislike it or someone who builds their beautiful fluffy (uncompetitive) army and loves trying their damnedest to outfight the opposition.

I´m a painter first and foremost, and without speaking the language here Socialising and Gaming are not going to happen for a while(even though I know the lads at my local indie and GW do speak English, I think it´s bad form not being able to play in thier first language), but with the advent of 6th and some hard studying I can see this changing this year.
Also the world buliding and role playing do appeal to me, not to the point of dressing up or believing I´m an Ork warboss, but more about losing myself in a different world after a hard day dealing with "the public"!

Unfortunately I don't get to game anymore and I don't know many of the rules from the most recent editions. I used to pick up the codexes for my armies to be able to have "legal" and point worthy forces but other than that, when I did try to read the rule book it almost literally put me to sleep. So instead I went for the painting and collecting side of the hobby more, which does incur some social aspects ie, insulting my mate for doing a better paint job than me but thats about it.

I love the painting and collecting, I mean I bought a blister or a squad purely to lavish some time painting it and put it on display. Now I have more things going on in life I find it is a good excuse for being anti-social to be "by myself" and have some time to relax, listen to some music and paint a mini with a reward at the end being the ability to put it up in my house somewhere and have people see them (only the good ones of course)

It's not that I never play competitively, in fact I always play to the best of my abilities, it's just that I care about everything else more, heck to me converting/modelling/painting/world building/role playing/collecting are inseparable.

If I could I'd make this three categories:

    Gaming - 2
    Building - 5
    Socializing - 3

Funny, it was the gaming that started me off all those years ago. Nowadays, I find I don't care whether I get a game or not, although I still enjoy games. I find that I really enjoy the converting etc and the worldbuilding. The latest project is modelling Captain Koryn from the Raven Guard audio books, as on the Labyrinth of Sorrows cover.

The collecting score would change for me with individual armies. Some are finished. It doesn't matter if anything new is released. Others get occasional new stuff, and one gets all new releases.

I really like the modelling side, but only when I'm motivated... maybe one day I'll actually finish painting them all!

I love the painting, modelling and creative side of the hobby. Seeing an army take shape and develop is really exciting and really helps to spur me on to complete a model or long term project. Secondly I also love the role playing aspect too. Creating names and stories for my armies and characters and taking inspiration from fluff, novels, stories and other fantasy sources to really bring my models to life and give them another dimension. World building is also very fun, from creating scenery to entire battlefields based on certain themes, stories and scenarios.

I wouldn't class my self as a collector in terms of, "I must have as many models as I can". Rather more, I collect the models or armies that personally appeal to me, or that simply attract me or please me aesthetically.

I wouldn't say I'm an ultra competitive gamer. Of course I love to win a battle, but just playing the games and immersing myself in the battle is enough for me, winning is a nice bonus. Either way you always come away from game having learnt something new for next time.

As far as socialising goes I tend to play and discuss the hobby with a close group of friends and family. My local GW store is only a 15 minute walk from where I live so it's nice to be able to go there to meet new people and talk about other aspects of the hobby.

I like making stuff. And I won't field a mini that is not finished.
I like hanging out with my friends. Certainly we play, but it's more of a 'let's see how this will work' than a 'kick your butt' attitude.
I like making complete units, not 'armies' in the tournament sense. That way i have more things to pick from when setting up a battle.
If it's harder than "Rules for Wargaming" by Arthur Taylor, then it's too complicated.

    I play games with a D12 ;-)

Love playing some varied systems with mates, very enjoyable, have done tournaments around the world, they're fine, but I won't do GW tourneys any more, no thanks.
I often find myself buying mini's I don't need. But then as there are so many interesting manufacturers out there now I can't help myself...
I don't have the time what with work and family to commit to long running campaigns - but I do like to get to clubs to play when I can, and I am happy to play with the many friends and acquaintances I have met over the years. Above all I am interested in gaming fairly and would much rather win a sportsmanship award over achieving 1st place in a war game tourney.
If it's not fun it's not something I want to be involved in.

I especially enjoy converting and painting- I am certainly not competitive because it is more important for me to have the models I like and to create an army according to the fluff I create for it.

When I say that, I'm not generalizing and saying that every competitive gamer is an a-hole. I'm saying that I turn into one. Big difference. I've met lots of great guys who do well competitively, so no judgement on my part there. My point was that because of my nature, (being very successful in athletics when I was younger) I get very serious when I play with a competitive edge. It's a great mindset for me to have in sports, but it's not so great, personally, for the hobby. Especially when, for me, warhammer is a hobby and a fun time with friends, that I use to distance myself from the stress of everyday life. I get enough stress at work and school, I don't need to put more on myself by going to a tournament. Because I would. That's just how I am.

I'm surprised how few people list being competitive with any weight. Is this true of the hobby as a whole? (I really doubt that.) Do they not want to admit it? Or do they spend all their time in the tactics and rules forums?
    ... and then I won.

Spend time on forums, I'd guess. Lots of people do just love the hobby. They are the warhammer version of "The silent majority". There really isn't any reason for the to argue over magic weapons vs magical weapons.
