    games workshop going bankrupt?

someone mentioned this to me today, and apparently they're shutting down there historical department (didn't know they had one).

    can anyone shed any light?
If the World Eaters were assigned to our planet... i don't know, it depends on how long it would take Angron to skullf*ck every single corpse before moving on. There wouldn't be much of a planet left, though.

Shutting down their historicals arm is a far cry from 'going bankrupt.'

Chances are good that shutting down their historical department will make them even more profitable, actually. Although historical gamers are lamenting the loss, I'm sure.

Warhammer Historical apparently closed a couple of weeks ago. If someone thinks this means Games Workshop is about to go bankrupt I'd say they've very much grasped the wrong end of the stick.

Yes, historical is gone, but it just means more staff to focus on the core games, which are going from strength to strength.

Not even that - Warhammer Historical didn't even have any staff, not on the payroll anyway. A skeleton crew assembled from other departments as and when required. Been like that for a couple of years now IIRC.

The only difference shutting down Historical has made, is losing the goodwill of gamers who like historicals. Apart from that it's been basically dead for a while unfortunately. Nothing to go with GW going bankrupt, whatsoever.

You're right, i forgot to the Historicals team were mostly Rick Priestley at al. You're right about alienating gamers though. I can understand not paying out to print books and the like, but how hard is it to sell the .pdfs on the website, or through a seller like DriveThruRPG?

Almost no outlay, some money coming in, gamers happy. How hard is it?

The may have viewed items as a competitor to their own products that encourages you to buy other companies' miniatures.

That might be [partly] why they're shutting it down.

I've spoken to GW staff who didn't know about it.

    QFT.

There was a thread elsewhere on Warseer discussing the announcement, and someone posted a comment from Rick describing how Warhammer Historical was largely run as a favor to some of the old school guys who wanted to use the older Warhammer rulesets as the basis for historical gaming. For legal reasons, this had to be done under the umbrella of GW, but the projects didn't really have much in the way of staff. He even mentions how the division basically operated out of his garage for a while in the beginning.

Anyway, years passed and many of the guys who started up Warhammer Historical had moved on. With the division not really making money (and as you say, forcing people to look to other manufacturers like the Perry brothers), there wasn't much reason to keep it going.

I too hope that the products make the transition to digital. Putting them up cheap as ebooks wouldn't be too bad, or do the Specialist Games thing and just stick pdfs online.

Yeah they sold off a load of the books last year at 50% I picked up Kampfgruppe Normandy for a reasonable price. Either way if you are interested in the WH rulesets a number are still going under a slightly different guise from what I understand (just not a GW product anymore). I believe that Warwick is working on a system very close to KGN under a slightly different name.

    Re: games workshop going bankrupt?

No, most certainly not going bankrupt. It's a shame about Warhammer Historicals, as as far as I was aware the rule sets were pretty well received in the historical community. As is the case though they had no miniature line and thus cut aside any possible route to other manufacturers.
Trying to convince Warseer that GW are anything less than perfect is like trying to teach a horde of zombies that lettuce is a perfectly acceptable alternative to brains.

Honestly anyone who did not know that there are Historical Miniatures that can work as an Empire or Brettonian army out there proabably deserves to be price gouged by GW.
