I think that in the case of the ECW they have some idea of some of the units but a lot is just guess work based off of vague or partial descriptions in contemporary manuscripts.

I don't usually have much interest in wargaming periods were "everything" about a unit/army/etc is known. I have a "need" to rebel when it comes to uniforms etc.

Oh well to each his own
I am therefore I think OR I think therefore I am?

What's even better, especially in the Royalist army is the combined regiments. Many Captains/Colonels ended up with "regiments" of 50-100 men, which were then combined with other "regiments to form a decent sized unit. So you could have grey jacketed/blue trousered troops with green coats/red trousers, red coats/grey trousers etc as well as all the replacement stuff, so multi coloured hats, brown trousers, and many more.

When I did my ECW Royalists I had 4 units of foot, or which 2 were uniformed and 2 combined, but with variations within them all. I had 6 units of horse of which 2 were uniformed and 4 combined. Made a nice colourful army that's for sure!

Many times in the ECW the only way the sides could tell each other apart was with field signs and rallying cries, unless of course they both chose the same, which did happen!
