Thread: Too much Terrain?

    Re: Too much Terrain?

I'd also point out that just because you brought vehicles doesn't mean you should be able to go where ever you want, when ever you want without being hindered by the terrain. It gives you benefits, but there are some drawbacks as well. And honestly, it's not that bad. I never used to worry about going through terrain with my Ork army.

    Re: Too much Terrain?

While there *IS* such a thing as too much terrain (when vehicles can't move, heavy weapons serve no purpose, and the assault armies make it across taking almost no casualties) I don't think the OP's board qualifies. The big thing is that the terrain is arrayed in such a way as to be highly annoying for certain armies/builds, and god help you if you have to play Table Quarters with a large or a mechanized army. It's really more the layout than the volume.

    Re: Too much Terrain?

I think it looks like a good amount of terrain. It's more than is absolutely necessary, but less than you could put on and still maintain a balanced game. And it looks awesome, so there's the fun factor.

Honestly, I think it's pretty good, I'd tend to go slightly more than you have for an ideal game, but it's definitely not too much.

Looks fine, a little more would probably improve the game, not hurt it.

I'd love to play on that table. With my IG or daemons. It looks fantastic and I don't see it seriously inconveniencing either.

Looks fine. Quite nicely done too. I'd be happy to play 2000pts on it at least.

Great looking table, but yes it is a bit too much terrain.

    Re: Too much Terrain?

It looks good to me. Very nice aesthetically too.

There really can't be too much or too little terrain. Battles take place in all sorts of settings from city blocks to wide open deserts. My wife and I are currently doing a horrendous battle in the midst of a 5X6 city and it is bloody and hard going in the extreme. Loads of fun though. Really captures a Stalingrad feel.

Other times we've done full speed armor thrusts against massed Nid MCs through rolling hills with very few trees. It's all in the scenario.

Fine amount of terrain for me.
If you took it off the RoB table and put it on a flat one, it would give you a truer idea - but I've never been a fan of that RoB

    Re: Too much Terrain?

I like the look of your table. It looks like some real but uninhabited area.
I would add some small pieces like barrels, amo boxes etc. for some more of a feeling of habitation and some small/light cover (let it have light cover (6+/5+) and no restriction to movement).
However, I have to say I would move some woods from the edges more over the table.
And personally I prefer trees not as high as these even if they look very realistic.

All considered I would love to play that table with my SW, my Eldar or my nids. with 1500 to 2500 points any day.

I do not agree to this without restriction. IMO it comes down to what you want to play. I agree if it is a game in the store just for fun, with no preparation. But in a campaign or a scenario this is totally different.

    Agreed.

In my opinion no that is not too much terrain, and can I come play on that table?

    Re: Too much Terrain?

Why do people keep bringing up the 25% rule, there is no reference to this that I can find in the new rulebook. Look at pg 120 on setting up terrain, they give two options, narrative and alternating. If you read under Alternating, each 2x2 space has a terrain density limit of d3, so conceivably you could have 18 pieces of terrain (plus 2 fortifications) on a 6x8 table. I always wondered why people said cover was nerfed in 6th, not only is there potentially MORE cover than 5th, ruins still confer 4+, stealth is easier to obtain for a unit (just one model needs to have it) so most terrain will still be essentially 4+, plus we have added shrouded and such. The simple fact is there is more terrain coverage in 6th with lower cover saves than ever before- if you are using the terrain rules outlined in the rulebook. I many situations, if you are not paying for power armor, you are in good shape.

Like the others, I think the table looks great.

    Re: Too much Terrain?

Terrain seems fine, I myself would be tempted to add some small bits to break up the larger open areas. Probably a few rocks, tree stumps etc, but thats just me.

slightly off topic.... Awesome looking Saim Hann army! Got any close-ups?

Because the thread was started more than a month ago, before the new rulebook came out and the guy was playing under 5th ed rules.

    Re: Too much Terrain?

Hate to jump in late but this table is so beautiful that I have to chime in. I can't imagine anyone being doltish enough to complain about this table. As I have a preference for assaulty type armies (BA, Nids, SM-bikes) and am not huge on vehicles, this is exactly the type of table I look for. Given how much more important shooty will be in 6th, I'm thinking the more terrain the better, in order to cut down the slaughter of advancing troops.
Yes, there are female marines and my Sunhawks will explain it to you.

Looks good to me, except that I'd prefer a bit more LOS-blocking terrain.

Amazing board! even if a little short in true cover terrain for my tastes! I would love to play a game in it =).

    Re: Too much Terrain?

That is too much terrain. Can't move vehicles around, I dunno, that is not my style at all. It's only a 6x4 board to begin with, no need to artificially shrink it by making impassable crud on the edges (just my opinion).

    Re: Too much Terrain?

Looks good balance to me. We get alot of enquries about how much terrain to use on tables, and find it helps to see examples of other peoples set ups. So you might find some inspiration here, our gallery on facebook where groups and others have shared pictures of table set ups https://www.facebook.com/pages/Amera...5836?sk=photos
