Starting IG

Hi guys I'm looking at starting off imperial guard so 500pts worth to begin with.

I have a few ideas running around in my head such as a commissar leading a large fearless group of guardsman with a tank, or small guard squad with heavy weapons teams. I don't really want to play a vet chimera army just yet.

So any examples tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated

If you want a large number of guardsman, you are going to want to go the platoon route with large blob squads with heavy weapons included (usually auto cannons) lead by a commissar.

The only issue with using big blob squads is speed. You can do a congo line and take objects (very useful if they are close together). You can also be creative in placing models so you get a cover save.

You can also counter the slowness of blob squads with an outflanking platoon lead by al rahem. Absolutely brutal against every opponent. You can also include some vendettas or valkyries in order to add fire power.

My advice

Command squad with an astropath
Lord Commissar with power weapon and carapace (or Yarrick)

Marbo (this is a MUST in any infantry heavy list)

Platoon command with Al Rahem and three melt guns
40 Guardsmen, four with plasma guns, one commissar with power weapon.
Platoon command with 3 grenade launchers or sniper rifles
30 Guardsmen, 3 autocanons, 3 grenade launchers, commissar with power weapon
Platoon command with lascannon
30 Guardsmen, 3 autocannons 3 grenade launchers, commissar with power weapon
Heavy weapons with 3 lascanons
Heavy weapons with 3 auto cannons
Heavy weapons with 3 lascanons

Vendetta
Vendetta/3 armoured sentinels with lascanons

Hydra
Hydra

Don't remember the points off the top of my head, but that is a good start.

Wow cheers mate, although I'll shrink the list down I'll definately keep that list in mind.

For out flankers could u use a hell hound squadron?

Only thing with hellhounds is I'd you don't have massive amounts of army which an inf. heavy list you won't they tend to die quickly. That is why outflanking the vendettas and sentinels are good bets as it lets you kill the threats before getting shot.

If yoU want to shrink the list, my advice is cut out one of the 30 man platoons.
