Wrath of the Tomb Kings, Casket of Souls display model

This will be my first fantasy thread ever, I've painted some fantasy when I was younger but it's always been 40k that intrigued me the most.

So for the sake of trying something different for a painting comp at a Danish forum I opted for a fantasy entry to venture a bit out of my safe zone and really try and give this model 110% to test my own abilities.

The model I chose is the Casket of Souls as it is an awesome model and it presented me with an opportunity to try out a spiderweb technique that I've been wanting to do for a long time now.

I know it's supposed to rise from the sand on a heap of skulls, bu I don't really care, I really wanted to capture the ancient tomb feel and thus the plan is to cover it in spiderwebs en masse

The plinth is around 50mm in diameter as that is the maximum size allowed for the competition.

    On to the pics:

    The assembled model

    Some detail work

And a spider as someone had to make all the messy spiderwebs to come

Some tests of the spiderweb technique

And some progression on the actual painting. I'm keeping the tones very earthy and am trying to tone town the skulls as to not steal away too much attention but in the same manner still be visible.

That's it for now, the deadline is July 11th, but I'll be going on holiday on the 29th of June so that'll be my personal deadline.

    C&c is much appreciated

Looks very impressive so far. My only worry would be that the spider webbing would just look like you'd left the display piece on a shelf and a real spider had webbed it. I guess being careful about where you apply it will take care of that.

Wow this will be amazing! I haven't seen anything that creepy in a while; a perfect fit for tomb kings. I love the tiny spider you built and the spiderwebs are amazing; Would you mind sharing how you manage to get these?

Thanks Yes it will of course take some arranging of the webs to make it look like they belong on the base and is not just random spiderwebs But this is actually also why I opted to add a spider to the diorama as it makes a natural connection between the base and the webs

Glad you like it And I can only recommend the spiderweb technique for anyone who owns an airbrush and likes making dioramas And the tutorial can be found here http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.dk/201...piderwebs.html it's really awesome

Fantastic piece - I'm literally in the middle of painting this very model, however not to anywhere near your standard. Can't wait to see the finished article!

Thanks It took an evening to built, then I worked on sanding the blank part of the plinth for anther few hours the next day. The painting is two evenings worth of painting approximately so far. And then the spider took little more than an hour to build and six tries

    Thanks

    Here's the next update.

The black part of the plinth still isn't smooth enough and will need another layer of filler and more sanding, but the solid coat of black made it more easy for me to see the surface clearly.

Wow, I really like all your logs but this one is something special, spiderwebs are very natural looking, at first I was worried they would be too large from your test shots, but the final result is great, also love the small pop of color from the lizard

Thanks man, the Indy feel is not intentional, at least not consciously But who doesn't love Raiders of the Lost Ark
