Looking For Turn based, play by mail strategy game

Hello,

A friend and I enjoy bashing each other or the comp over the head in strategy games. However, he's got a new sprog on the way so extended gaming sessions are going to be off the cards for a while.

Back in the day strategy games had a 'play by mail' option...I think this would be a good way of us still getting to play against each other but at our leisure. Are there any good modern games out there that provide this or has 'always online' seen the death of such features?

There is Mechwarrior Tactics coming out soon that looks kinda shiny.
No eta on it though.

You might want to try Hero Acadamy or Wesnoth - available as smart phone apps and easy to pick up

I like the look of Hero Academy but sadly it is iOS only atm.

I will keep an eye on Mechwarrior.

I really like WINSPWWII and WINSPMBT. You can even do a full campaign. Great games!

EDIT: Didn't see that it needs to be a recent game.

Have you tried Age of Wonders? It is a PBEM Heroes of Might & Magic-like game (but better). Another excellent PBEM game is Stars!, a 4X space strategy game, with horrible graphics but great gameplay.
