    The Preyton

Foolhardy knights of Bretonnia sometimes mistake the savage and hateful Preyton for the noble Great Stags of their land, and will follow this twisted beast, possessed of a dark cunning, into the very deepest parts of the forest. Only there, where there is little chance of escape, will it finally reveal its deadly form, its savage fangs, leonine paws and monstrous wings, and attack the unsuspecting warrior.

While their appearance is truly vile, it is the legendary malice of the Preyton that makes them particularly dangerous. Corpses mauled beyond recognition and tracts of forest befouled and trampled betray their presence, the savage creature often discarding the torn ruin of their victims to rot, killing out of pure hatred rather than hunger.

Little is known of their origins, but dark legend has it that in ages past they were Great Stags who were enslaved and corrupted before sacrifice-strewn herdstones. Now, bereft of their nobility, the Preytons know only an all-encompassing hatred for that which they have lost.

The Preyton is a finely detailed multi-part resin kit designed by Steve Whitehead. Rules to field this savage creature in your games of Warhammer can be found in Monstrous Arcanum, and the kit is available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 29th June.

So the last eight weeks have seen five 40K releases, one WF release, two empty weeks... and now all we get is a mutated stag beast no-one asked for?

Come on, FW/WF. Throw us a bone here.

Yeah, been wanting this since I saw it at GD.

Definately going for a Shadowfey vibe with my army.

Edit: Musashi - sour grapes, much? What were you expecting? Some mega monster like an Emperor Dragon, Mammoth, or Bonecrusher Giant?

Small Varghulf style models are not only well sculpted, but effective, and price cheap. Have these Ambush and Frenzy, and see what happens. No charge redirectors when you come from behind.

    I asked for it!

Lovely piece - should pull nice double-duty as an Abyssal Terror and/or Varghulf, too.

I do think the art was slightly better than the finished product and the paint job is pretty drab, but it's not a bad model and I quite like it.

Not had any of the "good/neutral" monsters really yet - Phoenix, Shard-dragon - but those sculpts weren't on show at the Open day so not expecting them soon.

Very nice model, but the first time I've heard of it I though it was a Wood Elf monster... Actually seems more a Beastmen one, which is cool.

i agree, but that's only because i play chaos dwarfs and every week i hold my breath waiting for the k'daai destroyer or bull centaurs.

oh well, this is still a nice model.

Can anyone explain the name? It's also a kind of shoe, according to google.

It's a weird thing to make up because it sounds like prey... but it isn't... what is the thinking here? I'm just mystified and I feel like there's something I'm missing.

The mythical beast has a different spelling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peryton

The peryton is a fictional animal combining the physical features of a stag and a bird, presumably originating in Jorge Luis Borges' Book of Imaginary Beings, although he refers to a lost medieval manuscript as a source. Often depicted as a winged deer, the peryton is said to have the head, neck, forelegs and antlers of a stag, combined with the plumage, wings and hindquarters of a large bird, although some interpretations portray the peryton as a deer in all but coloration and bird's wings.

It's a bit of a letdown for me. The painted version I find to be pretty ugly, and I expected it to be at least twice the size.

On the other hand it is not that expensive, and would make a nice second Varghulf. It may grow on me...

I remember thinking it was small at the open day. It's smaller than a great stag! And yes I agree the paint job does not help it.

I also thought I'd be larger, especially after GW increased the size of the Manticore and Griffon, which are comparible to the Preyton's stats. But I like the model itself, might also work as a Jabberslythe...unfortunately the base is smaller and it's way to tiny to go with a chariot base.
It might scale quite well with the Marauder Chimera and Manticore, those two were small as well. But for the price it's totally fine, I guess. Looks good for a okay price, so why not if you're interested.

The official Great Stag is also hideous, though, so I'm glad it's not the same.

This thing is creepy as all hell, you can almost imagine the tortured sound this thing would make, I like it. Price is right, too.

The name comes from Peryton, who is an imaginary creature found in a medieval manuscript.

The creature main concept is written by the argentine author Jorge Luis Borges "The book of the imaginary beings" (original title: El libro de los seres imaginarios).

The book describes many strange creatures which appear in ancient texts and mithologies: such as Bahamuth (arabic creature), Garuda (hinduism) and the Roc brid (persian creature).

A good note is that in Borge's description, the Peryton has a human shadow instead of a stag one, and that the creature is involved in the fall of the Roman Empire.

Size took me by surprise (as the actress said to the bishop), I was thinking it was alot bigger until the comparison shot showed how small it was. Still like it though.

I suspect that the 'ancient medieval manuscript' may not actually have existed? Borges was famous for mixing invented references with real ones, although it can be difficult to tell because he was so erudite and all.

I'm not a huge fan of the model. The paint job isn't doing it any favors either.
