Since I am woefully poor at the moment and haven't got Monstrous Arcana yet I'm lost on the backstory for this dude but it looks like a good alternative to the Jabberslythe to me. It needs a better paintjob to be honest, that one does it no justice.

EDIT: On closer inspection and with some slight facial remodelling I see an even better alternative to that horrific cockatrice model. The more I look at it the more possibilities I see

My point was more that its too negative around here, not that you have to like/love everything they release. Perhaps i was unclear. Anyway its not a topic for this thread or this sub-forum. I might start in in the right section later where i can explain my point better without starting a massive ot.

Apologies if you took offense, offcourse you are entitled to an opinion. Even a critical one!

the possibilities with the model are, at first I would sand off the feathers, they look very weird (maybe because of paint job which I consider to be horrible)

Stats are similar to a SoM Griffon, with lower Ld. There are a couple of upgrade options. It also does impact hits, has Hatred, and counts wounds against itself towards its own combat resolution. It's not a large target, and sometimes sticks around to eat bodies (which has another psychological effect). Unmodified points cost is 15 higher than an unmodified SoM Griffon. It's a decent beastie.

Yeah. I don't know why they garbled the name. Its a mythological critter I've always been particularly fond of, and I'm rather fond of the model. The name irks me beyond reason, however.

I love it! I've been waiting for it ever since I read the fluff from Monstrous Arcana. Preytons (yeah, I was also confused by the name change) are (according to in-game legend) formerly Great Stags that have been captured by Beastmen shaman and mutated into these nasty creatures. They hate everything that they've lost and loathe themselves to such an extent that wounds taken in close combat add to its CR as well as the enemy's.

Points-wise, it's well worth the cost, being cheaper than any of the Beastmen Rare choices (except spawn). Its options are pretty useful; it has the choice of upgrading Frenzy, a 5+ Scaly Skin save and/or both Forest Strider and Ambush. And for its cash price, I think it's very worth it.

(I know that I'm straying from rumours a bit here, but some people have said that they don't know much about it)

Not the best paint job.. but I really like the fluff and the model sculpt is alright. I think it might be added to my mini collection.

This is one of the monsters I've most been looking forward to... great thematic fit my beastmen! More medium monsters please Forgeworld!

Sculpt looks good and it's priced at £25 is rather reasonable, it's jst a shame that the paint job let's it down. I think the sure of the model is about right since it doesn't have the large target rule

Good points (WE are not smurfs!)

As far as I am concerned, I did not like the mythological being (used to be in DnD monster manual of old)... but I like (very much) the sculpt... I like the size (most FW are a bit too big for me ... nice as sculpt but take a lot of room on the tabletop, look at Tamurkhan or the landship!)... if not the painting...

Oh no! There are now so many things that look pretty cool in FW!...

Thinking it could be a good alternative for a great eagle. Since they started coming w 50mm bases I've been using my cockatrice as a great eagle, whereas previously I used warhawks.

On a side note, how evil can Beastmen get? They spent days and nights torturing stags on their altars! Where is the world coming to? I'm sorry, I know those stags are supposed to be magical and ancient and intelligent and stuff, but when I picture the scene... "and now, stag, we're gonna torture you! Where's your best chestnut spot! Speak!" Were they bored or something?

Come on, FW/WF. Throw us a bone here.
Lots of ppl have been asking for this one, myself included, great model with good enough rules, will be getting one for sure.

Agreed. Really cool concept, fitting model - I like it.

@MiyamatoMusashi: You see, this is the great thing about The Forge. They do things that are somewhat unexpected and interesting and not "what everybody asks for" because that would bog us down in endless waves of uninspired unit upgrades or boring big monsters.

Well it's funny, because when they make a monster, well, not everybody, but many asked for (giant squig), people complained about how they lack imagination, too. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes, really.

Re: Warhammer Forge Newsletter #29 Preyton

I just feel like it would be nice to see stuff people are waiting for, for their armies (Bull Centaur, Destroyer...), or can otherwise use generally, instead of things that can only ever be used in Storm of Magic anyway and of which most people won't use, when there's been so little for Warhammer Forge in the last two months anyway.

I've got nothing against the Preyton per se (don't like the model, but to each their own) but lately it's been Space Marines, Space Marines, Space Marines (much of which was dual releases)... something SOM-only and rather uninspiring IMO. By all means release the Preyton, evidently some people like it and that's great for them, but given the potential of WF/FM I feel disappointed to see them release nothing but SM and SOM for months on end.

That's all I was trying to say. I guess I'm in the minority. Fair enough.

Re: Warhammer Forge Newsletter #29 Preyton

It's dreadful. The pose is almost directly swiped from Azhag's wyvern and the zombie dragon (which I'm not a great fan of either), except it looks like it's legs have given out or it's flopping about on ice or something. The details look rough and rushed, too many wrinkles seem like they're just chopped into the sculpting medium and left like that, no smoothing or blending. The surfaces are wobbly and chaotic (with a small c, which is not the good one when it comes to sculpting). I mean, look closer at it, if you somehow think it's a great sculpt! Dewd. And for some unfathomable reason Steve Whitehead in particular and FW in general thought it would be a good idea to use those bleedin' awful forward-pointing spikes-hammered-into-face Duane-Dibbley snaggle-teeth from the zombie dragon, and the can't-make-me-mind-up half-plucked-chicken broken-umbrella wings from the cockatrice.

    Argh!

It looks to me like a novice sculptor given a chance to have something big put into production, but hampered by his own lack of experience and the influence (in his own mind or imposed by GW/FW) of Trish Carden's school of crappy monster design.

I don't mind it, in fact I think it's pretty good. My main issues are a/ the paint job is very muted and drab and doesn't show off the model well and b/ I don't get how it's wings (from the fluff) are an advantage when it's lead it's prey to heavily wooded areas? It's not going to be able to fly in those areas and I think the wings would be more of a hindrance than a weapon - but this doesn't reflect in either stats or rules.

I'm happy WHF continue to release stuff but would have much preferred a dread saurian or one of the other missing creatures.

Isn't it one of the missing creatures? You'd have preferred they did the ones you were waiting for, you mean
