This should probably be a poll, but I think 1500 is the best. It is enough points that you can take some cool things, but requires you to cut out others so that you can't take everything.
“The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.”

Anywhere between 1500 - 2000 seems to works for me. I get enough models on the board to have a good diversity of stuff with room to maneuver.

2000 is my favourite - a wide range of unit types, plenty of variety in the play and a couple of hours of fun at least.

For me it's 1200, call it Skirmish+. It's not yet a full battle, but it's bigger than your Skirmish where every model could fight on its own (like in RPGs or Necromunda).

I’m only stating my opinion, it’s not fact.

Looks like I'm an odd one out, I'm more into the larger side, 2500-3000 is ideal but generally the bigger the better but not using those stupid apoc rules.

I like 1500, you have to make actual choices in list building rather than just putting in everything you want. Also, too much bigger and it gets way too crowded on a 6x4 table, I can't stand games where both deployment zones are pretty much full and the two armies just head straight at the unit across from them with no manuevering possible.

Anything from 500pts up to a full Battle Company. Of course time and space kind of limits the upper end ;-)

2000-2500pts considering model and average table sizes, though it gets messy with horde armies.

Re: What points level do you consider the 40k ideal?

TheMav80's point is a good one - this should definitely be a poll!

I'd say around 2000pts is ideal. At that stage the FOC is just about limiting your choices - only just, usually, unless you're playing a very spammy build. I disagree with the damn thing, but it's clearly the purpose of the scheme to attempt to 'force' more balanced armies. Sort of. At 2k you start thinking to yourself "Ah dammit, I really want X, but that means I can't have Y or Z". Whereas at 1.5k, you might be automatically taking Y because it's easier to fit into the points.

Saying that, usually end up playing 1.5k. Apart from anything else, our shop is a pain and usually only has 4x4 table(s) available. Playing 1.5k is bad enough, but 2k is a waste of time. It is also quicker and easier, etc.

500 - 2000 for me. Prefer the smaller games though

1750 on a 4x6' table with lots of terrain, preferrably cityfight.

Having a bit of a love affair with smaller 500p games at the moment though.

I like 1500. It forces players to make tougher choices, unlike 1850 where you just get everything you want.

Nope, you're not the only one, I'm there with you.

I've always felt the points values most people tend to play at were too small to truly represent what a battle would look like.
"From the fires of betrayal, Unto the blood of revenge, We bring the word of Lorgar, The Bearer of the Word, The favored son of Chaos; All praise be given unto him, For those that would not heed, We offer praise to those that do, That they might turn their gaze our way, And gift us with the boon of pain, To turn the galaxy red with blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods." - Excerpt of the 341st book of the Epistles of Lorgar.

Re: What points level do you consider the 40k ideal?

Well 40k is not about seeing the whole battle. Its more focused on that small part where the epic fighting is.

It's like looking at the table and not seeing the world end where the table does. It really extends out to encompass the whole battle zone and your part of the army is just at the right place at the right time to make the difference.

Re: What points level do you consider the 40k ideal?

I like 1500 points the most. Too much smaller and it's a race to see who gets the least overhead from the required units and too much more and it just needs too big a table.

I also like that at 1500 point you have to pick one or two big toys and don't just get to bring the kitchensink. Army character to me is as much about what you don't pick as about what you do pick.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

The 8x4 table setup we don't roll randomly we base it off what each army brought. If its 2 hordes, we deploy 12" on the long. If its 2 shooters, we do Dawn of war shorts (4' deployments) but not the dawn of war rules. If they're balanced we usually do spearhead or L shaped deployments.
I like this breakdown as well. My wife and I both like larger games and we have a 5X6 table at home, so we like to go for 2000+. That lets us take our favorites, whether it's the big Nid critters or demons for her, or lots of tank and such for my IG and SM heroes and vets.

Sometimes we will actually use two army lists each so we can make creative scenarios and tailored lists, like a heavy list for the beleaguered first force and a fast list for the second army coming to the rescue.

When we play at our local store we tend to go with the 1750 standard list.

    100% agree

1500 pts is very min-max... 2k gives you all the necessary unit and a few toys... I dont play 40k to just win or loss and become a better general, I also like to be inspired by the cool/herioc stuff my FUN units do....

Is there really a seperation between 'units I want' and 'units I need'? And if there is, should there be?
