The verse in the 6th ed he army book says that god of light and god of murder battled for his soul. So the elves view asuryan as god of light. Khaine like khorne and Ulrich seems to be a non magic god actually. The sorceresses that practice dhar have nothing to do with the cult of khaine. And high magic is the entire pantheon if you ask me.

I've never heard of a god called hoeth, only of the tower. What is he god of?

Hoeth is the Elven God of wisdom, knowledge and learning, thats why the White Tower is called White Tower of Hoeth, because its a place dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. Worshippers of Hoeth travel the path of wisdom and enlightenment in many different ways. Some fast and meditate for years, others study obscure and arcane tomes, but for a few their true path lies in martial prowess (Swordmasters). HE dont have a "god of magic", although Hoeth is clearly connected to the arcane arts.

Wow! Lots of nice information here. I guess my next question is how big a fluff-rapage I am committing if I paint High Elves in some other colored robes? Lets say on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is painting skaven with light grey fur instead of stock brown and 10 is painting Grey Knights with blue armour and those damn U:s allover...

As long as you justify it the warhammer world is big enough to acomodate it.

looks is more important than fluff in this matter.

My bloodletters are blue with pink swords. They look awesome in battle.

You could easily make some fluff to justify it, say they are from the colonies or something.

I don't think I've ever seen any mention of Khaine being against magic. That the sorceress and the Temple of Khaine are two different institutions have likely much more to do with politics and personal power than anything else. And lets not forget that the temple do their own magic as well. Frankly it's difficult to picture an elven god as being anti-magic.

I've never seen Ulric as being anti magic either, they both still fit the warrior god trope. Ok they're not exactly the same as khorne, mainly beacuse khrone is a god that stems from an emotion while khaine and ulric stem from belief.
Ulric and Khaine inst anti magic they dont hate it they just done give a damn about it. Gods like that are worshipped on the battlefield.

On that basis, though, I don't think many gods have an active interest in magic. Only Verena/Hoeth, the gods who explicitly include magic in their portfolio. Ulric doesn't seem any stingier with His blessings than any other deity (there's a perma-burning reminder of it in Middenheim).

(Hmm, an Ulric-Asuryan parallel there? I hadn't thought of that before, although it doesn't match up in many other ways.)

I don't necessarily think being a warrior god invalidates the magical association, either. Sigmar is a warrior god and the Grey Wizards have a pretty close relationship with His cult; His warrior priests deploy his magic directly on the battlefield. Two of the greatest warrior orders in Ulthuan are associated with the two most "magical" gods (Hoeth and Asuryan).

The book is way older than the films and i am pretty sure that the whole of warhammer is influanced by it

I've read Tolkiens books pretty many times and I don't find any exclusive mentions of elves wearing white robes. On the contrary I think the Noldor preferred gold and Sindarin greys and blues. At least in artwork, eben though I'm not sure their colors were ever firmly established in the actual books. Moriquendi, however, were specifically mentioned to dress in brown and green.

Yeh but we all know LOTR was a rip off of Harry Potter :P

Read that this morning and had to laugh.

But back on topic, I agree with the majority on here. The whole High Elves wearing white, as far as I can remember from reading the background, is because it's the colour of clothing the Elves associate with mourning. I'm not quite sure as to what they are mourning, I think it was something to do with all the death caused during the Sundering. Hense the reason the Dark Elves still wear the Black/Purples they wore when they inhabited Naggarythe.

Ultimately the only arbiter is your sense of asthetics as it is your army.

That being said, there are choices that are more or less aligned to the background. Where that line is, varies from person to person depending on how they interpret it. In this case, the fashion police seem awfully draconian if the only robes they could wear where white (with a secondary colour).

We know from the novels that Elves do wear other colours (particularly mages), does this extend to military uniforms though?

I would interpret it to mean white is the usual colour but it would not be unheard of for an army to bear house colours which may or may not include white. If you really think they should reference the mourning somewhere, keep in mind it could be as simple as a white sash or cloak or patch.

Since the mourning part seems to be connected with the dying people idea i generally chose to ignore it. It feels to tolkienesque.
