    Tau Ethereals

If two Ethereals are near one another and the other dies, does the second still living ethereal still need to take a Price of failure test?

This is a situation that won't come up in a normal game, so the rules don't address it. If this was a team game, I would say that if the rules of one amy don't affect the other, then the same should apply to the Ethereals.

We debate RaW, not in an attempt to gain an advantage, but rather to better understand the rules as they are written so that problems can be identified, addressed, and possible solutions developed before we get to the game table.

You can't have two Ethereals, the Crisis Suit Commander is a 1+ choice, so you only have room for 1 Ethereal.

It would only come up in team events (go with what Culven says there), a non-standard mission where you can take 3 HQ units or Apocalypse. For Apocalypse, you're working out the rules already with the people you're playing with, so talk it out there with your opponents before the game. For a non-standard mission, I'd say also talk it out with your opponent beforehand since you are in non-normal territiory for how the Ethereal's rules are supposed to work.

The planetstrike book and possibly also the battle mission book specifically allow 3 HQ units so this is not a house rule only scenario.

By the rules, all tau units not exempted must take the price of failure test. Only Kroot, vespid and drones are exempted. The Ethereal is none of those three, so he must test.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

Makes sense that the 2nd ethereal would test, I mean he did just watch as his counterpart get eaten, blown to bits, or etc and he knows he is next...

Keep in mind though that if the second ethereal is joined to a Tau unit, that unit will be fearless and thus never fail the test. Ethereals on their own are scared chickens though.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.
