To many models and to little time

Have you considered any of the Paradox strategy games? The Hearts of Iron series, Europa Universalis and so on? Those make the time just fly by and they keep on being really exciting. They are technically RTS games but are essentially always on pause until you hit "play".
For some free games, here are some suggestions: Cave Story, FreeCiv, Elder Scrolls 2 - Daggerfall, OpenTTD (remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe), UFO - Alien Invasion, WinLems (Lemmings), GTA1&2, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (one of my personal all time favorites), Hidden&Dangerous Deluxe (probably even better than Ghost Recon and nicely hard), Command&Conquer 1&2
