To be fair, the vaguely interesting armies weren't the standard studio 'Eavy Metal armies, which is at least an improvement of sorts on the usual pages of pictures.


It wouldn't kill the WD team to spread their net just a little wider though.

Particularly hard to understand since the models from "that large gaming hall" often appear on What's New Today. They just need to use a better camera and hey presto, easy content for White Dwarf.

Not that I want to encourage them to use more photos for easy content. It's fairly clear they're doing that already... over 75% of the magazine is just photos. I find it hard to believe anyone on the WD team works more than two days a week as it is.

However, keeping in mind their intended audience is 10-14 yr olds, i think you'll find theres probably a large amount of work involved in determing effective photos, sequencing them, calculating word-to-photo ratios, etc etc. I'll refrain from doing another full 'as intended' review, but i really don't understand how so many people can complain that something not intended for them doesn't interest them.

Because GW doesn't really have an alternative? If they had an advanced hobby magazine and "GW Games for Dumbies" then I don't think there would be a lot of complaints. The content has been so dumbed down over the years that white dwarf is more useful as a fish wrap than it is a hobby magazine.

I thought it was an OK issue so gave it a five. Only thing that really ticked me off was the five pages of ***** FC ads.

My score for this issue:

All the pretty pictures: 1/2 point. I like pretty pictures.
GW Staff army showcase: 1 point, I love seeing different armies showcases beyond the usual, dull eavy metal armies.
Two ok battle reports: 1/2 point.
Battlefield terrain feature and Tau painting guide: 1/2 point
Standard Bearer & describing Jeremy Vetock as an 'ecitable American': 1 point.
Forge World article & Psyker rules for each army: 1 point. Hoping seeing FW featured more in an 'additional rules and kits' capacity will help stem the idiocy that says FW stuff isn't official.

Total: 4.5 points. Rather mediocre, particularly bad for an issue featuring a new edition of the flagship game. Could possibly stretch it to five in a pinch, I really did enjoy bits of. I'll vote five due to lack of half options in the poll.

It's kind of incomprehensible to me. I mean, are we supposed to be excited about 6th Ed? If so, why don't they give us something to get excited ABOUT? I cannot and will not just trust them on this, not if they expect me to sink $75 (more for you poor folks Down Under) into a new rulebook. We gotta see something of what went into it.

It's like they're not even trying anymore. Just pictures of models and really crap "painting guides" if they can even be considered a guide (i.e. I wanted to paint something yellow, so I used yellow paint, here are several pictures of me applying yellow paint with all the skill of an ape, on the next page you'll find an advert for yellow paint etc.)

I wonder if White Dwarf is on a very set budget and they havce to produce within that format every month. Without a chance to splurge on a big new edition it is a bit of a missed opportunity.

I thought the tau painting guide was pretty good. Rhodes is a very good army painter and does their new painting technique a service. I'd still like an EM masterclass every issue. They have 8 staff painters now. Everything else, still meh. Too many ads and wasted space.

Even as a seasoned Veteran (ie old git) I actually enjoy WD as a rule. I/m not a huge 40K fan, but a new edition usually gets me as excited as a 14 year old N00b... but this issue just left me cold.

Nothing except BUY 40K NOW...

Nothing about the background to the changes, nothing really exciting paint wise, and nothing for the WFB / LotR players at all... not even a 2 page crappy 'paint guide',

I get it. It's 40K release so the focus should be 40K. I could take a 40K only issue (even as a square baser) but there ws nothing at all that got me interested... Worse than the infamous Giant issue....

Didn't hate it (I really liked the player armies, in particular the Big Hat Guard), but I will say this. I came up with a drinking game. Well, I say game. Every time you read the phrase "In the grim darkness", take a shot. I suggest something light if you don't want to end up in A&E by the time you hit the store finder.

First White Dwarf in quiet sometime, wasn't going to but hooked me with a pic of Chris Pech's funky looking guard.

Designer's notes on 40k, missed the what has changed coverage they have applied to previous editions, dropped lots of hints talked in evocative and delibrately vague language. It is nice to see them talk about design ideas and intent, shame it was without substance and almost certainly paraphrased and edited to try create hype. Lack of a breakdown on whats change is poor, smacks of a lack of confidence in their rules to my view point.

Battle reports, really not a fan of the current format - dumbed down and lacking detail with lame by 6th ed sumaries. Second report was also too brief and not worthwhile, do it right or don't bother.

Studio armies: Some nice armies, great to see some of the conversions and paint schemes - a lot of padding and largely irrelevant gibberish. Oh and why include 2 generic unintersting GK armies. In short could of been a good feature some definately deserved coverage but would of been better to pick say 5-6 interesting armies and cover them with more depth.

Tau army painting: Actually a good article, not something I would use and I personally would prefer the old style master classes - without the 500 photos. However, it highlights the strenghts of the new paint system (Not tried em yet, had no reason to) and certainly an article I feel is worthwhile. White Dwarf has to cover a range of hobbyists and while not for me I don't take exception to it and can see its place.

Cannot remember anything else, oh yeah the Jeremy Vetock article - less of a Jervis I am going to find an abstract way to promote our new release but still not really a gripping or interesting article.

Didn't expect anything other than 40k, not an issue to me on the release of new edition of a game.

In short I brought it out of curiosity, made exceptions for new release of a new edition and should of stuck with my reasoned decision to NOT buy it. Won't be picking up one in future, simply no point as you get no info or interesting insight. RIP White Dwarf the classic magazine is truly dead.

The pictures of the non-studio armies were nice, especially the IG with the Empire bits and some of the other pictures were nice. The copy I read seemed to have a couple of army lists, nice pictures of those armies then a few not very nice pictures of parts of those armies posing as if they were snapshots of a battle. I couldn't find any actual battle reports though.

Didn't see the point of the painting guide. Didn't they just release a big book and DVD set full of painting guides (that apparently if I skim WD every month I won't have to buy)?

It was nice too see someone else prattling on instead of Jervis. Though I can't remember anything Jeremy Vetok prattled on about aside from keeping his Nob at the back. Mainly because I seem to remember he was involved in one of the most heinous Battle Reports of Warhammer 5th Ed that involved half a dozen Orcs and a Giant "besieging" a castle.

I gave it a 3/10. For the pretty pictures.

Just read mine through. Worth the $12? Probably not, last months was better. The pictures were nice, the IG army with feathered helms from the Empire range was impressive particularly, and I'm sure Tau players would appreciate the focus on them for the first time a while.
Can hardly expect much Warhammer and LoTR stuff in this months, though the lack of discussion about how the game has actually changed was disappointing.
I give it a 4.
