    The summer sale army bundles?

Howdy, am thinking of picking up warmachine/hordes and a 'summer sale' sounds like the perfect time to do it! But trying to price up the contents of the bundles on the privateer press site i'm getting confused :P

isn't there anywhere on the site that just sells complete single models? When i search for something like 'Warwitch Siren' I just get the prices for the individual components, and can't find individual prices on the models found in battleboxes at all (i'm given to believe the battleboxes models are new sculpts, but there are altenative models if you wanted to buy them seperately?). i'm also not very clear on how many models it means when it says something like 'Mechanithralls (full unit)'?

    Here's an example army bundle...
Cryx Summer Sale Army Bundle contains:
    Cryx Battlebox (plastic)
    o Warcaster Warwitch Deneghra
    o Slayer Helljack
    o 2 Deathripper Bonejacks
    o Defiler Bonejack
    Mechanithralls (full unit)
    Necrosurgeon and Stich Thralls
    Warwitch Siren
    Skarlock
and a free copy of the Prime MKII rulebook!
i guess i'm asking what it would cost normally (i.e should i snap this up now!!! or if it's only a slight saving just pick up this game at my conveniance). also just trying to get a handle on how buying stuff for this game works, as it all seems a bit muddled to an outsider.

    cheers.

The summer sales are generally good buys. For their price, you're typically gettting a couple of units for "free", though I think their price only makes the MK2 book free ultimately, and it just seems like there's 1 or 2 units that aren't used a lot, at least not by myself an players in my area. (ie I've never seen my friends use close to this many thralls but again thats just our area).

Edit: okay did a little math and it looks like, if you're just starting a Cryx army, then it would be a good buy. Part of the problem most gamers would have is that many who've already started armies will have many of these peices(specifically the battle box). For example, I'm thinking about the khador one as I have no winter guard (shocking, I know) or ua/solo but I already have widowmakers and can't use another (FA of 1) but its still a good buy as it would normally cost about 140-150 seperately.

you basically get the book for free and the Scarlot for free. Its a great start tho, cuz youre saving about 40-50 bucks. But if you dont like something in the bundle then id take youre 120 and check out ebay. Put in your army name and add "army" "lot" or "bundle"
I once got 300 bucks worth of khador for 160 after S+H

thanks for the replies, i didn't think to look anywhere other than the store for prices (why would you?). the replies have touched on another thing i hadn't really considered, not knowing the game i've no idea whether the selection of models in the bundle are a decent choice or something where i'm likely going to replace a large % of them once i learn the game. if there's an element of privateer press clearing out some stock of things that haven't sold very well i'm not really 'saving' money if the 'free' models are gonna get replaced fairly soon in favour of better things.

i've decided to go for 'legion of everblight' simply because i like their range the most (that's pretty much how i make any decision in gaming). but within that faction i'd still like to have force capable of competing and being interesting. would people say this is a reasonable force, assuming i'd be happy to replace the warcaster?

    Legion of Everblight Battlebox (plastic)
o Lylyth, Herald of Everblight Warlock
    o Carnivean Heavy Warbeast
    o 4 Shredder Lesser Warbeasts
    Strider Deathstalker
    Strider Deathstalker
    The Forsaken
    Warspears

Looking over the various bundles most of them seem very reasonable and useful. They're all based around the faction's battlebox and then have some very useful solos thrown in, together with a plastic unit (if the faction has one) or otherwise one of the staple units for the army. They're definitely not a cheap way to get rid of unwanted stock.

Legion is a great army that is very diverse and flexible. I think the deal contains overall good models, with some that will probably be replaced. I'll do a rundown of them all:

Lylyth, herald of Everblight: Lylyth is definitely not the strongest Legion warlock, but she is good. She is pretty straight-forward and easy to learn, which is good if you're new to the game. The best part about her is that her spells and abilities all work well together with pretty much anything you take in your army. This means that whatever you buy will fit great into a Lylyth list and she will be able to support it well.
She can run both beasts and infantry well, though if you intend to take many beasts you'd also do well to take some Fury support solos since her own Fury stat is pretty low.

Carnivean: Is a really good heavy beast. It has the strongest melee attack of all the Legion warbeasts, and a very good ranged weapon as well. It is fairly durable thanks to its Animus (a sort of spell), but also very expensive points-wise.

Shredders: It is very rare to see a Legion list without at least one Shredder. They're very cheap and have an amazing Animus. That said, most lists uses one or two of them, the only warlock who really wants more than that is Thagrosh the Messiah, so unless you're planning on playing him you're probably never going to need all 4.

Strider deathstalker: Absolutely amazing solo. One of the best infantry killers in the game. They can reliably kill two 1-wound models per turn each. Its very common to see one, if not two, in Legion lists.

The forsaken: Excellent support piece. It helps with managing your warbeasts, and also has a pretty powerful aoe attack that it can use if opportunity arises.

Warspears: Decent multi-wound unit. They have both melee and ranged weapons, both pretty strong but their ranged attacks have pretty short range. They're not very good at hitting things with their shooting attacks but Lylyth can help with that. Definitely the weakest part of the deal. They're useful under a couple of warlocks (Lylyth being one of them) but not the best infantry choice that Legion has.

that all sounds pretty encouraging, thanks for taking the time.

a lot of what you say doesn't mean much to me, but the general vibe is "stuff is fine". I'd more than likely replace lylyth just because some of the other options have awesome models that i'd love to paint. simple as that.

If you have a more specific idea for the army in mind, then the bundle may not be for you. I, for example, am about to start a Legion army myself (I blame my friends lol) but I'm not going for the bundle because the models I want are more specific. I do plan to get the warpack (gives good units to alternate with tooling lists for practice) but I already know I want 2 or more of the other warlocks and different units/solos/beasts and so the bundle wont help. The warspears appear to be a big chunk of the value and since they and the rulebook are of no interest to me, then its not worth it. The nice thing about legion is that many of the models are not too terribly expensive individually, except the 5-10 model units or heavy beasts.

Privateer doesn't sell much stuff directly, it is mainly special edition products and a bits service. It is to promote more retailers to carry them as they won't have to compete with the companies own webstore. If you want to see the prices look them up on the independant retailers' website of your choice.

Without having a context for the rules and playstyles of the armies/models you will have difficulty choosing what is right for you. I would recommend down loading the free quick start rules here. That document contains the full rules for each starters models as well as all of the rules that you will need to know to play games with them. Proxy using other models; 30mm or 25mm (40k infantry) based models for the Warlocks and Shredders, 40mm (terminator sized base) for the medium warbeasts or troll warlock & 50mm or 60mm (Dreadnought base) for the heavy warbeasts. Play some games with friends and see what you like before buying.

    2) Come Heavy Or Don't Come At All
    3) Give As Good As You Get
    4) Win Graciously And Lose Valiantly

How much do you save when you compare it to Maelstrom prices with free shipping?

You would need to look at each deal on PP's site and add the equivalent on Maelstrom's.

Maelstrom have extended their summer sale until 9th July, btw. Use the code "SUMMER-2012" to get 16% off RRP.
