21st Host of the Word Bearers Legion

Welcome all to my project thread, dedicated to the 21st Host of the Word Bearers Legion.

The army began as a desire to play Warhammer 40k with my closest mates with ENTIRELY FINISHED models and terrain. The rule is quite simple; if it isn't finished, it can't be fielded in a battle!

It's certainly not a new concept by any means, but it's one that is incredibly powerful and motivating. I suggest that anyone who feels a little tired of the game try this out for themselves - I've never been more motivated to model and paint before.

We began with 2 months and 500 points to paint. The idea is that we would then continue to add 200 points per month to our list and play battles throughout the process! So far we've just finished playing some 700 points list, so are all about to expand a further 200 points in the coming month. This will ensure regular updates to the thread for you guys to look at.

Anyway, onto the army itself. I'm more than happy to post WIP shots of any of the minis shown here, but I thought I'd wait and see if anyone was interested before I assumed so and put the effort in. I'll post some larger shots from the Flickr account if needed too.

The 21st Host of Dark Apostle Baros
When creating a Chaos Space Marine army I wanted the inclusion of Daemons to be an important factor. I chose the Word Bearers after reading the Blood Angels Omnibus and deciding that the bad guys were about 100 times more interesting than the titular heroes of the story.

Initially I was planning on including several units of Lesser Daemons and a few Greater Daemons in the later stages of the project, but as the rumours are now suggesting that we will be able to include allies (or Detachments), I'll be able to include the genuine articles; Bloodletters, Daemonettes and a Bloodthirster or similar. Essentially want the close combat component of the force to be made up of Daemons, and the tactical or shooting aspect to be fulfilled by various nasty Daemons.

Click the images to see the larger shots.

    Dark Apostle Baros
    Baros is a Terminator Sorcerer.

Baros Makasus is the Dark Apostle of the XXIst Host of the Word Bearers. He fought bravely alongside the Urizen and his brethren since before the heresy and eventual fall of the Warmaster and has been an essential part of the host ever since.

Baros rose to the position of Dark Apostle just a few short centuries ago, although for a long time it looked to be a position that his younger brother, Domos Makasus, would take when the opportunity arose. Although at a higher military rank than his brother, Baros soon began to view his younger sibling with jealousy and fear as he rapidly gained favour within the Host. Domos was a gifted public speaker, fearsome warrior and held unshakable faith in Lorgar's teachings. Soon, Domos ascended to the position of First Acolyte, a role second only to that of the Dark Apostle. It was becoming increasingly clear to Baros that he would never become the spiritual leader of the host, not while his brother still lived.

During an attack by the XXIst Host on the planet of Scintilla, an Imperial World in the Calixis Sector, Baros saw an opportunity to murder both his brother and the current Dark Apostle. This treachery would all but secure his position at the head of the Host, giving him access to untold power. During a ground assault on a particularly important Administratum sector of the Hive world, Baros was assisted in his plan by the ambitious Captain Kor Garron. Together they sabotaged the Dreadclaw drop pod that contained their master, Domos and a selection of Chosen warriors. The Dreadclaw spiralled away from the rest of the assault force, crashing deep into the heart of an Imperial barracks. Upon realising his Dark Apostle was vastly outnumbered and in mortal danger, the Host's Coryphaeus gathered twenty of his Annointed Terminator elite and fought savagely into the barracks, slaying all who crossed their path. By the time the Coryphaeus and his beleaguered unit reached the site of the Dreadclaw, only one man remained alive: First Acolyte Domos.

    Domos was
immediately evacuated to the Word Bearer fleet as his wounds were grave. He had slipped into a restorative coma and the twisted Chirurgeons on board the main strike cruiser doubted he would ever awake. Baros wasted no time at all, assuming leadership of the Host and ordering the immediate withdrawal of all Word Bearer forces from the sector. He placed the Coryphaeus into custody for having failed to rescue the now deceased Dark Apostle; a failing more often than not punishable by death.

Within weeks, Baros was appointed as the new Dark Apostle of the XXIst Host, and named Kor Garron as his Coryphaeus.

However, there was still one final lose end; Domos,
the more gifted sibling, still lay in a coma and could awake at any time. Baros knew that if he allowed his brother to live, Domos would eventually challenge him for the role of Dark Apostle.

Baros could not risk murdering the comatose Domos as his actions during the disastrous assault on
Scintilla had already aroused the suspicions of the Dark Council. Instead, he decided to have his brother incarcerated within a Dreadnought, thus preventing him from remaining the First Acolyte. When Domos finally awoke, he found himself bound within the impenetrable sarcophagus of a mighty war machine, doomed to serve the Host for all eternity. For five days and five nights, Domos endlessly bellowed tales of treachery and murder from inside his iron tomb; his hateful words were quickly dismissed as the product of mind ravaged by war. In time, Baros grew weary of the tirade of vitrol and condemnation that spewed forth from his brother and eventually ordered the fleet technicians to disable the Dreadnought's vox projectors, silencing the mighty war machine for all eternity. Domos screamed no more.

The Dark Apostle's right hand, Coryphaus Kor Garron
Filling my 2nd HQ slot is this Terminator Lord. Armed with claw style Daemon Weapon in the game.

The 3rd Coterie of the 21st Host
I eventually want two 10 man Coteries (units) of Chaos Space marines, and my current 700 point list includes two 7 man units. Working up to it. Includes a plasma gun and Icon of Chaos Glory.

Domos the Silent (former First Acolyte)
I plan to avoid tanks in general for this army (not including Rhino transports of course), so this is one of the only armour units I'll be including.

I do have a number of other models and units painted up an nearly complete (including an extra special Rhino), but I shall resist posting shots of them until they're done!

    Thanks.

    Heldrake

Nice! Bonus points for starting the army with some stuff to show off without haveing a finished army. Im planning to maybe start a WB army myself once the new starter box arrives.

As for the painting/conversions, i like em alot! Cant wait to see more. Will you include all types of demons or stick with khorne?

    Thanks mate!

I'll be including a myriad of colours! I have some Bloodletters painted up already, but I plan on including some Daemonettes for a splash of colour (and black PVC), and perhaps even the gigantic Plague Hulk Daemon Engine for a touch of Nurgle Filth.

    I'll keep you updated.

Also, how did you convert the sword arm for the dread? Might have to steal it.

Thanks for your comments mate. Much appreciated.

There's very little conversion going on with the sword arm actually. The hardest part was cutting the sword and removing the =I= symbol from the blade. I snipped off the rounded tips of the hilt and added the claws from the Contemptor CC arm kit as upturned blades. I then glued the sword hand into the hole meant for the Contemptor's light ranged weaponry and covered the top surface of his hand with the nose plate from a Bloodcrusher.

The hardest part of that model was carefully cutting and gluing the thin metal gilding around each edge of the dread so he'd feel more Chaos like.

Re: 21st Host of the Word Bearers Legion

    Update:

Click any image to view a full-sized version; I don't want to clog up the board with massive images.

First, a painting guide for the army, since a few people have asked about the red:

Stage 1: Undercoat the model with Chaos Black, and base coat with Red Gore using an airbrush.

Stage 2: Paint all edging and metal areas Boltgun metal. Be very careful not to go onto the red armour sections at this stage. Tidy up with Red Gore if you do.

Stage 3: Paint the parchments with watered down Dheneb Stone, the black areas with Adeptus Battlegrey and the eyes Chaos Black.

Stage 4: Wash the model with Devlan Mud on the red and metal areas, Badab Black on the grey areas (to turn them light black), and Gryphonne Sepia on the parchment.

Stage: 5 Painted the script with Scorched Brown, highlighted the red with Red Gore followed by Vermin Brown, used weathering powders on the metal before finally highlighting with Mithril Silver.

Next I have a few additional minis:

A close-up on the plasma gun marine.

The Aspiring Champion of the 3rd Coterie.

And finally my latest Word Bearer, armed with a Chainsword and Bolt pistol.

    Cheers.

Re: 21st Host of the Word Bearers Legion

    Update 2:

I had already painted this pair of Bloodletters of Khorne, but having now seen that I'll be able to field them as the genuine article in my army list I was inspired to return and finish them off.

    Bloodletters of Khorne:
I decided to paint their Hellblades a combination of sheer black Onyx on the blade, and brass details on the hilt. I tried hot/firey blades and they seemed at odds with the rather dark, deep crimson skin I've gone for on the body.

I used "Bleached Bone" rather than white for the bumps on the skin, because their eyes and teeth are sheer white and I want them to be the focus on the minis.

I'll have 8 more in my 900 point list (one being a Herald of Khorne).

Awesome minis, I really like them!! Especially the Terminator Sorcerer.
But why haven't you painted the tubing on their helmets?

You're the second person to ask that! I guess I always imagined that they'd be painted the same colour as the helmets, but now you've mentioned it too, perhaps I'll go back and have a tubing pass. Same black as the gun would look pretty sharp.
