Weathing powders are amazing. I love them. They allow you add matt colour to your model rather than the glossy finish of washes. I use a simple dark brown taken straight from the pot and lightly brushed over the metal parts. Its OK if you get some on the red because its just further dirt. I then re highlight the metal using mithril silver but only fine lines of it.

As far as the blood goes, so far I've always mixed it by trial and error out of perhaps 2 parts black wash, 2 parts red wash and 1 part red gore paint. The result is a fairly transparent gore but with plenty of dark patches where its thicker. I finally paint drops of pure black wash on the "thicker" patches of gore, where more blood collects.

To do the strings of blood, simply dip a pair of cocktail sticks into UHU glue in the yellow tube. Its really stringy and can be mixed with your blood paint to make it like gore.

    thanks for that Rovient,

I'm assuming that your using the forgeworld pigments or are you using MIG>?
Also what do you use as a fixative/ what do you do after applying the raw powder from the pot?
being powders surely you can't just dust it on, paint some mithril re-highlights and then call it a day?

I read a good tutorial by Bohun of Huron Blackheart that teaches some nice techniques with weathering pigments. It's a must read.

I experimented with some weathering pastels on a couple of word bearers (not weathering pigment) from a kit that I had picked up ages ago and never tried out, but I decided that they turn out far too chalky and don't achieve the look that I'm after. now I have to pick up some proper weathering pigments so I can achieve the results I want.

Thanks again for the inspiration to do my full chaos battle company up as word bearers, will have to post pics when I get more free time, don't have much spare time to work on them right now which is annoying.

After I finish my word bearers over-sized battle company (Host) I'll be taking a well deserved break from painting red

I've already begun my next model; a Soul Grinder/Plague Hulk! It's a big piece so will take some time, but it'll be worth it for that Maw Cannon!

Nice! Especially the guy with a missile launcher. You wouldn't be from the Guildford near Reading by any chance would you?

Would you possibly up for a game when everything's painted?

That would be awesome yes! I'm also going to Throne of Skulls in november, so it'll be good practice to play 1500 pts.

    Update:
I've updated the first post of this thread with some fluff regarding Baros and Domos.

Your fluff is pretty good too. Heavy infantry armies are the best.

Re: 21st Host of the Word Bearers Legion

    Update:

Sorry it's been so long everyone. I've been naughtily painting a little bit here and there on multiple units at one time, resulting in 1 terminator nearly done, a few Dark Vengeance units built and undercoated and a half finished marine.

However, I was able to finish this massive beast; the Nurgle Plague Hulk. He represents either a Defiler or Soulgrinder in my Word Bearers host.

Infuriatingly, I noticed some hoses and flies that I've missed in these photos. So it's not quite finished yet.

Next up; The Anointed Terminator unit.

Ooh can't wait! *Gets a big box of popcorn and settles into a long wait in the forum lobby mashing the F5 key*

As for the Plague Hulk, I really like it - the skin tone and shading all round is very well done especially his gribbly nurgle-ey parts.
Nice use of copious amounts of weathering powders to give it a real feel of serious aged rusted up metal there.
A few speckled areas of a lighter rust flicked on over those areas would made him stand out a bit more - that could just be the photo not showing the light rust up well though. A bit of scuffing-up on some of the exposed raised metal areas in order to create a natural worn metallic highlight.
