This is really shaping up well and you're keeping up with an excellent standard of sculpting. The new nose looks more "trollish" but I felt the smaller one was aesthetically more pleasing (which I assume is bad for a Troll, and even worse for a Nurgle Toll King). Out of curiosity how did you drill the various holes of different sizes in the plasticard?

Not sure the new nose is better but the holes in the weapon look very nurgly.

@Duke Donald: The holes were just made using various sizes of drill bits. I bought a set of drill bits about a year ago when I made some bookshelves and got over excited in a DIY shop.

@Chimp Lord: Thanks, I'm pretty pleased with how the axe turned out.

Today I started on Throgg's right hand, put a flap of skin over the top of his intestines, added an oozing spot to his back and gave him a maggot infested wound.

    Any comments are welcome.

The maggots are sweet and the mini is getting better and better. I'm really impressed by the general quality of sculpting. In particular, the tufts of hair looks perfectly clean and smooth, something I always find very difficult to achieve. The axe also looks very good.

Wow, absolutely fantastic! I love watching models evolve over time, and this is proving to be no exception!

Just one question - is the left hand done yet? From the side on angle in the second picture, it looks like the palm could probably afford to be a tiny bit thicker, considering the size of the rest of the hand and the fingers? That's just my opinion, and to be totally honest it is an extremely minor detail, but I find that even with my limited abilities it's always good to give some constructive feedback if I can, even to the pros =)

    Keep up the awesome work!

    Re: Random Fantasy Sculpts

@Duke Donald: Thanks, to do the hair I cover the area that I want to be hairy in putty and then work my way down pushing lines in with a scalpel. I group the hair into trianglular tufts of three to five hairs, I think this give it an unkept scruffy look.

@Il Maestro: Thank you. I had forgotten that the palm of the hand needed more work, thanks for reminding me and it's done now.

As well as the afore mentioned hand improvement I also added the last of the fingers to the right hand, made his chest fatter and tried to improve the ears though they still need a lot of work.

He is getting close to finished now. All I have left to do is file his nails so that they aren't so rounded at the edges, improve his feet, sort out his ears and make him a crown. If anyone spots something that needs doing that isn't on that list I'd be grateful if you could tell me.

Any and all comments are welcome.

It looks amazing and nurgley. You may have to borrow it back once it is painted.

Palm looks much better now, great stuff! The whole model is really coming together nicely, can't wait to see some shots of the completed version!

    Re: Random Fantasy Sculpts

Thanks ShadyMonkie, Chimp Lord and Il Maestro.

So Throgg has been finished and delivered. Not a lot changed from the last set of photos but for the sake of completeness here’s Throgg as he looked when I gave him to my friend:

I also thought I would put my progress on my model for the sculpting challenge on this log. So here it is:

If this is of any interest there is more like it in the Grand Warseer Sculpting Challenge, there’s a link in my sig.

The next step for the statetrooper is a head. I’ve had a couple of attempts at human heads and not produced anything that looked human, though they could all be identified as heads so I suppose that’s a start, fingers crossed I’ll make an improvement for this guy.

Other than this I’ve got plans to make a skaven assassin so watch this space.

So I've put a head on my spearman. This is the best face I've done so far though I still think that his cheek bones are wrong and his eyes are a bit big and too far apart but any progress is good. Here is what he looks like now.

Next I'm going to put some buckles and straps holding his armour together.

Nice work on that spearman, he is really coming together! As for the face, I see what you mean about the cheek bones, though I think the problem isn't to do with the actual modelling of them, but rather the comparison between them and the face shape itself. To explain, the cheek bones are quite sharp, high and angled, however the face has a very wide and low-set jaw, which is really not a combination that you see on faces. Either bring the cheek bones down a little, or maybe slim down the bottom of the jaw and make it less square and more pointy?

Of course I don't have much experience with GS, so please take my advice with a grain of salt, but I hope that helps somewhat keep it up!

    Re: Random Fantasy Sculpts

@Il Maestro: I think that you may well be right about that. Next time I do a face I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice.

I've started making a Skaven assassin.

As you can see I've gone for a flying kick pose. When he's finished he will be holding a throwing knife in his right hand and I want to make his sword look more like a katana than a machete. The tendrils coming off his shoulders are there for be to build a cloak around.

Any and all comments and criticisms are welcome.

The Skaven assassin looks promising and that's definitely an interesting and dynamic pose. I'm intrigued by your strategy for sculpting the cape. I'm looking forward to seeing how well this will work. I find capes very difficult to sculpt and you may be onto something here.

    Re: Random Fantasy Sculpts

Okay so it has been a couple of weeks and I've not got a lot done. I blame having to write up my thesis. Anyway I did get a little bit done and now I've got time to put it up here.

Not much happened to this miniature to finish it but here's my finished sculpt of the sculpting challenge.

The theme for August's scultping challenge is a Howling Banshee so as that's 40k it won't be appearing here. Though anyone who is interested in taking part or just having a look should click on the link in my signature.

I also got this guy finished.

The original cloak had to be removed because it was a disaster. I went back to my usual method of making cloaks, just stretching out a piece of green stuff the right size and shape then draping it on. I'm going to have a go at another skaven assassin which will be making an appearance here in the future.

That's all for now. Any comments are welcome.

The Sate troop is good but I really like the assassin.

Wow, the skaven assassin is great. He would also be a treat to paint as you added sufficient details on all parts of the mini.

You are really good a sculpting! The assasin is really awesome.

Do you think you could get a picture from your friend once he has finished painting the troll?

    Re: Random Fantasy Sculpts

I've got a few things finished, first off, here is my tainted wizard, sculpted for the sculpting challenge:

The theme was a wizard who was falling to chaos but hadn't got to the horns and tentacles stage yet. I imagine the daemon on his shoulder whispering in his ear with lies to seduce him to chaos.

Secondly, I have made myself a new orc shaman:

Finally, I've also made this dwarf hammerer:

Not sure why I made him, but since the log is called Random fantasy sculpts, it certainly adds to the random element.

Any and all comments and criticisms welcome.

Wow, that tainted wizard is great! Not overly detailed, but the demon on the shoulder really sells the model
