    Of Scouts and Salamanders

    Hey Guys and Gals,

I was thinking of adding a couple of units of sniper rifle armed scouts to my Sallies army. I know that Sallies only have 7 line companies and take a preponderance of Termies but what are people's opinions on Scouts? Fluffy? Unfluffy?

Perfectly fine I would say, I use 5 with shotguns close range firefights and all. Might be getting some with sniper rifles soon aswell.
They all have to start combat missions eventualy any how.

I'm kind of talking Codex: Armageddon fluffy rather than 5th edition retcon where every flavour of marine is basically blueberry. I'm just not sure if Scouts and Salamanders fit together....

Is there any indication that their recruitment process is different from other marines? If you don't have Scouts you need some other way of bringing in new recruits, and although we have seen other chapters do it differently (like Space Wolves and Black Templars) I don't think I've ever seen hints at Salamanders diverging from the Codex on this.

They have scouts - they are as flexable as any other scout unit. They even have snipers for hunting large creatures on their home planet.
Dark Eldar - Kabal of the Posion Tongue
Salamanders - II Company 'Hammers of the Forge'
Blood Angels - V Company 'Knights of Baal'
The Blighted Ones - Deathguard Septuncis

Well, standard scouts would seem to fit the fluff of Codex:Armageddon; you might want to avoid the Land Speeder storm and scout bikers (the funky gravity of their homeworld makes training with either bikes or anti-grav rather difficult)

In the Salamanders Novels they sue the LandSpeeder Storm to follow the scouts while they are on a training mission.
Also I think the whole Chapter was deployed to Armageddon so I would asume that would include the Scout Company also.
*As far as recruitment goes I belive they start younger than other Chapters because they start there training as black smiths first under a an marine then go through the trials to become a Marine.

They fit fine boyo, every Chapter has new recruits and Salamanders deploy them as Scouts like most Codex chapters. The only real tactical limitation i can remember for Salamanders is they don't tend to use bikes and antigrav vehicles, i've never heard them being limited on scout numbers.

Then again, they MUST train with bikes and speeders for there to be power-armoured versions.

They also can't be spending all that much time training on Nocturne if they also want to be out purging Xenos etc. There's no reason that the Salamanders shouldn't be able to train as much off-world as any other Chapter.

Even if training is limited, with the number of models you're likely to be using in a 40K game, Scout bikers/speeders should still stand as much chance of showing up as Honour Guard, Command Squads and so on.

    Re: Of Scouts and Salamanders

The Salamanders are unique in that their IA article was published twice in 3rd edition with a few differences, both mentioned that the chapters scout company was noted as being small, one specifically stated it to be 60 men vs the 120 of the other six companies.

Well, there you are then - as long as you don't field more than twelve Scout squads, you're golden.

7th company is a scout company, with roughly 60 scouts in it.
