well what if you have a slight probability of hiting an engaged frendly if you roll for maximum distance, but there is legial enemy 6" in fron of you in the same direction, could to shoot then ? Surely Slalamanders aren't woried they might hit a few of thier own, come on they eat skinks on a missfire.

Well they're move-and-fire, and you can pre measure whenever you want in 8th.
So if this situation occurs it's because you put them in that position.

The rules don't say they can fire into combat, so you can't.
Plan B kill it with fire

    (Warpfire FAQ discusion)

    (hmmm checked FAQ)

Q: When firing a Warpfire Thrower, can you place the template
in such a way that it could hit friendly models after moving the
template the distance rolled on the artillery dice? (p60)

A: Yes, though it cannot be placed over any friendly models
    before you move it.

I am only arguing that salamanders can accidental hit friendlies.
    Doesn't really mention anything else.

+1 this is exactly what i was going to write when Moss decided to drag this 'debate' up, again.

Anyway they are not only move and fire they are march and fire, skirmishers and have a fantastic range potential. So its nigh impossible to not be able to take a 'safer' shot.

What you're failing to see is that the models in combat are not being "targeted" the unit behind the combat is.. Cheesy yes.. illegal? no

The way it's generally played in friendly and decent games is that , as for cannons and a few other machines and spells, if you aim and something COULD be hit by a template or straight line shot then it counts as being targeted. While that may not say that in the BRB it's common practice.
