Not sure whether this qualifies as cheap, but you can get a new table tennis table for under £200 and less than £100 second hand.

This is 9' long by 5' wide and one can have up to a 10'x6' piece of fibreboard on top if you don't mind a little bit of overhang and have the room! The table folds up to not take up so much room when not in use, and you get to play table tennis too.
Apparently, in the dying days of 2011, I started a blog-thingy to encourage me to do more hobby stuff.

For a long time this has been my "ultimate" gaming table base ambition - and they fold up pretty well too. Ideally though, this is for a garage based gaming area, and as a bonus you can actually use it for it's intended purpose too!

EDIT: Sorry for basically repeating all the plus points you listed Misfratz, but they are so good repeating them seems helpful.

I'm with those that don't see the point/think a bed is unsuitable. While the size might be nice, the height is way off, and the surface of the matress (rounding, often with divits, and perhaps soft) seems like a bad place to game.

I've been very tempted to make a 4x4 gaming table very similer to this design http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30062572/

I just lay a 6x4 piece of MDF over the dining-room table (with a thick plastic sheet between to protect the table surface). Cheap as chips, bargain hunters.

I have 3 2'x4' MDF with grass/roads on alternate sides. I like the £12 pasting board tables for playing things like Malifaux on. These just need 3'x3' playing areas.

Hmm, if you are able would it not be possible to make something that would extend out to 6 feet, perhaps with a drop-leg for stability?

All of the games I currently play don't require anything bigger than a 4'x4' so I simply have no need to go larger. Maybe for Dust Warfare but the sloppy vehicle damage rules have proved a real turn off for my friends & I on what was an otherwise very nice ruleset.

It would be easy enough to change the design to expand the size. I first got the idea when a bubby of mine moved into a smaller appartment a few years ago and wanted a 10'x6' table that could be stored away easily. He eventualy went with a fold away legs frame and 3 toppers that he stores behind his couch.

The problem with the bed box method, to be honest, is that if you're sat on bean bags, it can exacerbate back problems. I've tried and been nearly crippled after a long game.

I'd vote with getting a couple of paste tables and a bit of MDF. To be honest, you can store a paste table under a bed or behind a wardrobe as it has a folded height of about 6 inches.

Re: A cheap double bed - The perfect gaming table?

This thread made me realize my 120cm wide 'bachelor bed' (a cheap one from Ikea, too) is pretty much perfect 6'x4'. Maybe I need to start to play on the bed - that way at least I can say that my bed sees some action on regular basis Although it probably might diminish the chances of the bed to see any other kind of action, telling the opposite sex that I play with little men in my bed..

What's wrong with playing on the bed and having normal chairs? A knee-height table is pretty much perfect, IMO. Just have some hardboard or insulation foam board on top.. can be stored under the bed, too.

Ask your back (specifally lower) after 3-4 games. On the plus side, you will have a bed on which to ponder, recover from, and lament your wargaming table related decisions...

    Hi all,

Have you ever tried laying a floor? Well, we do it repeatedly... Everyone in our gaming group has the same setup at home. Click in floorboards usually come in the size 1x4. Put 4-6 or more of them on top of a table and you have the ultimate folded gaming table. When stored it takes very little space and can be deployed on any table quickly... :-)

Check the odd section at your local bauhaus or equivalent and you'll get it for peanuts as well..

    Regards/Robert

And I'll be paying a visit to B&Q before turning up at geek night tomorrow.

I like the look of those aluminium ones, but they're a wee bit pricier than £12...

Those floor tiles don't look too bad either!

I know people always plug the wallpapering tables, but I honestly hate them. They are flimsy, and terrifying when you have a couple of thousand points of your beloved models wobbling away on top of them...

I urge anyone going for a project to just invest in a better folding table, its worth it.

Something like that should run you about £50, and will last a long time.

I had a look at a wooden trestle table recently and it was plenty stable. Surprisingly stable. I was expecting it to wobble and pitch in the same way you describe, but no.

When the local club needed extra table space last meeting (why I was looking at portable tables in the first place), those were the type that we scrounged up from another room. The problem is they had to be schlepped from way down the library corridor anyway and have that ridge all around them. And can't be thrown in the boot of the car so easily. (The library staff would take a dim view, at least )

Will get a decent test of the boards tonight. Will be for skirmish games only so not many models or weight.
