Squig Ranking Problem - help on a potential modelling solution

I want to make a huge squig herd, but they don't rank up well. I am currently at 20 squigs and 10 herders, but I want to double the size to 60 total. There are just too many tails, cymbals and prodders that extend over as many as 3 bases! I have seen people convert pink horrors into squigs here on WarSeer, but I think that would lead to more of the same problem as the conversions I have seen are quite large.
I have an idea for using the heads of pink horrors and positioning / green stuffing them so it looks like they are squigs that have quickly buried themselves in the ground waiting for a tasty foot to step in their mouths - like an ambush predator. Part of the herding job would therefore be coaxing them out of their hole / baiting them with the snotling sticks to get them moving. Using this idea, I could extend the prodders over the buried faces and ranking would work much better.

    Finally my questions:
    1. Would a horror head sitting flat on a 20 mm square base extend over the base in any direction?

2a) Can horror faces (unbeaked) convincingly be converted to look like a buried squig with room for a prodder over top, or would it just be an O&G version of an army of skeleton hands and tombstones?

2b) If it is the latter, does anyone have any suggestions to this ranking problem besides extra empty bases (not WYSIWYG) or sticking the prodders out to the sides (prodders should be pointed at squigs or they aren't herding anything)?

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Use only the pipes and cymbals ?

I found the small squig in the fanatics set useful, together with diagonal bases, and converting some prodders to torches, with the idea that squigs don't like to burn.

Have you thought of using a unit filler as is the rage these days? a larger base set in the middle of the unit with several squigs or something else fitting could open up some space in the middle of your unit to allow for some flex along with some of the other ideas mentioned above.

I have considered unit fillers. They could look really cool, butI think that gets too complicated with a mixed unit. If a template falls on the unit filler, does the whole unit filler count as squigs, or all goblins or a mixture? Too many potential arguments one way and lack of flexibility the other. Plus I need many dispersed empty spaces to be able to make up for the tail, cymbal and prodder spillover.

I do like the idea of torches. I've seen some conversions using the quiver arms that look pretty cool.

I'm not so keen on just using the musical herders though. Too mono-pose, but the cacophony would be pretty hilarious to imagine.

Are there no chaos players who can give some insight on the dimensions of horror faces?

Here's what I came up with in case anyone is interested (WIP). I got a couple faces off ebay and sliced up some saurus hands. I'm not sure I like it enough to do 20 of them though - maybe 4 or 5. I'll fix up the details on the hands, then paint and base these up and see if I change my mind.

To master any skill you must accept doing it poorly at first.
