Very nice, good on DP9 for giving this a go. I already own the corebook pdfs but this is a great way to widen the player base by reducing startup cost.
Nice!
This is a game that I've always been aware of but never really strongly considered playing. If I can find some interested parties I'll get my hands on a few minis and give them a spin.
First Goodie up: Northern Task Force deal

Outstanding. I'll be all over that![]()
Those who know don't care any more, and those who care don't know.
Southern Force deal is now available.
If I had the budget right now I'd be all over this. I'm a huge mecha fan. Sometimes I hate being a student.

It just too bad that their distributor's website is so f-ed up that even after trying three different browsers and two different computers I can't actually get either PDF.![]()

That's funny; I've usually never had any problems with DriveThruRPG. Does it show up in your account that you've "bought" it, but you just can't download the file?
I've bought things from them before with no problem, but when I try either if these it was locking up my browser when I tried to add them to my cart. When I finally got one in the cart, it would log me out when I clicked purchase instead of completing the transaction. After a dozen or so tries I just gave up.
EDIT: Finally, after three days and dozens of attempts I have downloaded both of the free books. Maybe I'll pull out some of my Gears this weekend and give the new rules a test.

What is an approximation of a standard-sized force? Is the game playable at relatively small-scale battles, like a handful of mechs per side? The minis are gorgeous but a bit pricey for me.
The most common size is around 750 to 1000 TV.
It depends on what you want to field. For example, if you take Black Talon claw series, you are looking at 4 to 5 minis at that range, same for large gears and tanks. If you want cheap models and infantry, you may be up to 20 bases. A starter set can easily cost up to 750 TV or more.Is the game playable at relatively small-scale battles, like a handful of mechs per side? The minis are gorgeous but a bit pricey for me.
The PRDF biggies are up!!!
Breasts of War is having a Heavy Gear week. All starter sets are now on sale. If you are still unsure about the game, get the 2-players set (North vs South) and try it out.
This bears repeating, the starter sets are a great value, $90 for most of them gets you 9-10 metal minis (some more, some less with some big elite units), a rulebook, an errata/update to the rulebook, stats on most of the units in the game, most army lists, a tape measure and dice, everything you need to play a normal sized game except terrain and a table.
It really is a great deal for the price, and if you want to get into Heavy Gear, now is definitely the time to do it.

I'm definitely going to give the BOW videos a watch as soon as I have time. The aesthetic of HGB is pretty cool. I got the rules from DriveThruRPG and haven't read them through yet, but initial impressions are cautiously optimistic.
