Does anyone have anything good to say about 6th Edition

I have noticed that ever since the pre-orders, nearly every new thread on here has been related to some negative viewpoint on the new edition. Even though, despite having a few new rules revealed in brief, very few of us have actually got our hands on the new rule book yet.

There are several threads on Allies and how people think they are going to make for unfair play. There are threads on how people hate the new "magic" terrain rules. There are even threads on how people are already planning not to use certain rules.

Are we all becoming like Harry Enfield's characters "the grumpy old g***s"

Please restore my faith in the community, and tell me someone is getting excited about something in the new rules.

It has inspired me to join a builder campaign and make a unit of Sisters of Battle. The new rules encourage infantry and I plan on making an entire Commandery(The equivalent of a Space Marine chapter) of the Order of the Valorous Heart.

And since in this edition, Retributors with Heavy Bolters can actually wreck a Land Raider, expect that I am going to field a horde of Sisters of Battle. HURRAH!

Looks like fun. Allies will let me field real demons with my chaos marines, or recreate old style lost and the damned armies. Hull points sounds interesting - making lighter vehicles more likely to survive the opening turns and heavy vehicles less likely to emerge from the game unscratched (if there's anything more frustrating than the rhino that pops before you get to go, it's the land raider or monolith that you just can't remove from the game no matter how long it runs). Being able to buy terrain for your army makes it more likely that more games will include more cool, personalized terrain. The psychic powers sound fun. Fliers and flying monstrous creatures sound fun. Some of the gimmicky stuff could be cool.

All in all, I'm pretty excited.

Re: Does anyone have anything good to say about 6th Edition

I like the sound of things so far, Hull points are going to take some getting used to, but since i run SW mech i'm just going to keep using the same army and see what happens, at worst my vindicators will absorb more fire power, yet still be useful, as glances wont mean i cant fire, just loose a HP.

Shooting sounds good in regards to closest things die first, but could get tricky when i have WG in TDA leading some units, as if i stick them at the front do they just absorb everything on their 2+ until tehy fail, then get a look out sir roll to see if they are still alive?

Vehicle wise i may finally use the landraider with flamestorm cannons, as i can snap fire these two (auto hit anyways) then normal fire and machine spirit fire the remaining weapons, thats a boost.
Dreadnoughts still seem highly effective, simply as glances wont slow me down, and i dont need to buy extra armour anymore (unless it gets faq'd to add a hull point)
Razorbacks, i use the las, twin plas versions so i'll be able to move fire the lascannon and still fire the twin plasma with rerolls to hit on 6's

Troops, GH are still good, like the idea of overwatch, and also long shooting range when moving, which may make me bulk up the units and get rid of the tanks for now

HQ warlord skills sound fun, and hark back to late 2nd ed when you could buy chapter master upgrades.

Rune priests, bit concerned over the options for powers, it appears that from the new powers you need to be a certain lvl to use some of them, so rolling badly on the table could mean you have 2 naff powers. On the other hand if i can still use living lighting and hurricane i'll be happy (never used JotWW)

Allies sounds fun, grenades sound fun, fearless units not taking wounds from lost combats sound fun.

Overall it will be a change, everyone will need to learn it anew, but i think its a good thing to turn the game around a bit, and adding some new rules and options to play can never be a bad thing.

YES! As an Iron Warriors player I'm really looking forward to the new rules for both Allies and Fortifications, It means I can field both bunkers and slave troops (allied Guard conscripts).
This makes me very happy, previously I've beenstuck with competitive lists and now I can actually play IW as they should be.

The people who hate it will whine the loudest. The game, like fantasy did with 8th edition, is shifting away from absolute tactics and more into the realm of marrying fluff with rules as well as moving towards a more reactionary model where you have to work with things you can't plan out or optimize on your army list.

    I'm all for it.
NOTE: my use of the word "powergamer" is not meant as a derrogatory or inflammatory word used in a negative context. It is used to describe a type of player that uses power builds

I have seen nothing in the last few days that I don't like. 5th was fun, but I had a couple major gripes (wound allocation was the biggest one). All my gripes seem to be gone now, it looks like 6th is going to be awesome.

6th sounds great ! I have been following all the developments and I am liking what I hear - I am embracing the 6th Edition change.

I genuinely believe GW have done something quite clever - made the game better whilst also promoting their model range to the max (Allies). I think Allies makes a lot of sense for 40k and I will certainly be making the most of it in the coming years .

To be fair, 17 rending heavy bolters will take, on average, one hull point from a Land Raider in a turn of shooting. They may be better off sticking with the multi-meltas.

Very true! I do have 36 Heavy Bolter shots in the army I'm planning, however, as well as 120 Sisters of Battle, 30 Repentia, 19 Seraphim and 1 Cannoness. No vehicles, just an endless horde.

I for one am excited. For the first time in years we will be playing 40k in a much more dynamic and strategic fashion. I'm as excited as ever!

Well I still don't like how there's different types of power weapons. It just makes the game run slower as you allocate which dice goes with which weapon attacks, arguments over WYSIWYG, etc.
It's quite biased towards marine armies, putting armies like Eldar and Dark Eldar at a disadvantage. I mean the only weapon you're gonna get with Howling Banshees are swords.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to the new allies concept. I've always been a bit indecisive of what armies to roll with, but now I can just use some cool units I like from another army with my primary army.

I was beginning to think bad things was all people had to day about 6th Ed. Given the recent threads complaining, but it now seams that others are as excited as I am.

Still better than first edition where every CC weapon had it's own strength, damage, armour save modifier, that used to make CC very slow indeed.

Re: Does anyone have anything good to say about 6th Edition

I'm excited and from what I've heard, pleased also. Some of the units I have won't be quite as good, or at least more vulnerable, but what really brushes me the right way is that tanks are in that sweet, sweet spot where they are durable, yet fragile. Aaaaah...

Thanks to shooting being first-come, first-served, it makes more sense to actually think about the game and not the army selection, because those expensive meltas or squad leaders can easily be
taken out if put in poor places, whereas sticking them back might leave them unable to operate to their maximal efficiency. I call that a very good thing from a tactical point of view.

Psychic trickery sounds fun, as long as the powers stay mild and don't go to the S10 AP1 LB variety, but I've seen nothing of the sort so I feel strangely at ease. I've always thought it was a bit odd that psychics is something quite relevant to 40k, but still very shallowly represented in the game. GK was a massive change and after the shock died down, I think they did it quite well, what with psychic buffs and abilities becoming a staple, but still only a bonus that you can fail from time to time.

Overall, I think it'll be a good edition. As long as the 2+ save model absorbs all wounds whilst 6+ ork Boyz behind stay alive is made impossible, then I'm all game. (For example first wound affects closest model, the second wound the second closest and so on until unit is wounded, then rinse and repeat. I've yet to see the actual wounding rules, so this could very well be how it is implemented.)

And Allies. Oooh, how I love allies. The whole concept seems so brilliantly 40k and allows for fluffy things that are close to my heart. Might also give a reason to use some foot slogger White Scars to beef up the IG battle-line that I have...

I think it will have some very good aspects, and probably some aspects that could have been better. Overall, I'm excited about it.

I reserve major judgement until I have rulebook in hand and a half a dozen games under my belt.
