The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 11 (JUN completed work & JUL WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you play a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately yes, you are now too late to join in this Tale. Don't worry though, the Tale will be running again late this year (sign-up in August for a September start).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army?
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. Your armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of posting, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you. Regarding Jokers, you would only need to post a Joker if you didn't paint anything for any of your armies that month. If you painted one army but not the other, you would simply need to post Army 1 (x points) and Army 2 (0 points).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to play my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to play them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : Can I 'buy back' my 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : Yes, you can 'buy back' your 'Jokers' during the Tale. If you have already played a 'Joker' and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more than your target for a few months), then just state in your entry for that month that you wish to 'buy back' your 'Joker' and I'll take it off for you.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

    ##############################

I'll start off by posting my completed entry for last month. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to misterboff (me).
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 11 (JUN completed work & JUL WIP)

    misterboff's Deathskull Orks: June 2012 (D6 roll = 6)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 115 POINTS (150 TARGET)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1292 POINTS (1200 TARGET)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 2

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
'...the Boneheadz family of Death Skulls once overran and plundered an Imperial penal colony, and wore fragments of convict clothing printed with black arrows for generations afterwards.' - Waaargh The Orks!

    UNIT(S):
    5 Burnaboyz - 75 points
    10 Grotz (inc. Runtherd) - 40 points

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
Everything this month was assembled straight out of the box (although I did need an extra Burna).

    PAINTING/BASING:
The first colour is the basecoat, the second is a wash and the third is a drybrush. The bases are simply Vomit Brown followed by Citadel Sand.

    Nob Skin: Orkhide/Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
    Ork Skin: Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
    Grot Skin: Gretchin/Thraka/Camo
    Blue Face: Enchanted/Asurmen/Ice
    White Face: Astronomican/Badab/Skull
    Teef: Dheneb/Ogryn/Bone
    Eyes: Mechrite
    Pants: Chaos/Badab/Adeptus Battlegrey
    Top: Astronomican/Badab
    Straps: Adeptus/Badab
    Metal: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
    Rust: Calthan/Macharius Solar/Devlan/Mithril

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I love the Grotz, so cheap (financially and in-game) and quick/easy to paint. I love the Loota/Burna kit too (especially seeing as though I play Deathskulls).
Lows: I'm probably not going to use all 15 Burnaboyz together very often, but I just wanted the option.

    NEXT MONTH:
    [Keenan and Kel style]
Grab some Black Orcs, some Kombi-weapons, and some 2nd edition Ork Meltaguns/Plasmaguns, and meet me at the Mek's workshop... Come owwwn Flashy!

Just wanted to say sorry for dropping out over the past couple of months. Real life got in the way with new job and moving house. #boringexcuse.

Hope to join in next year's though! Well done to all those who are still going, and thanks for all the feedback on my Blood Angels in previous months.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 11 (JUN completed work & JUL WIP)

    Undying 14th Cromorian Legion (IG): June 2012 (D6 roll = 3)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 180 POINTS (MONTHLY TARGET: 175 POINTS)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1785 POINTS (TARGET TO DATE: 1750 POINTS)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 0

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
I can't really be arsed to write fluff this month.

    UNIT(S):
Stormtrooper Squad - Sgt w/ Power Weapon and Plasma Pistol. 2 Meltaguns - 55
    Chimera - 55

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
The stormtroopers are a fairly involved conversion. They have the shoulder pads from tank commanders as knee pads. Chopped up vox casters as backpacks. Greenstuff was used to bulk up the existing shoulder pads and add the vambraces and gauntlets. The weapons are connected to the backpacks with wire and the rebreathers come from the command squad box.

The chimera needed a bit of reworking. There was a large area on the left side that was missing due to a miscast that needed to be repared, I could have done a more complete job of that but decided to leave it as battle damage. I've also replaced the sticking out lasguns with cover plates - a conversion I was planning to try at some point anyway, but was somewhat forced into doing now by the miscast. I think it turned out quite well. Also , I stuck a greenstuffed banner on one side, for no other reason that the fast that I could.

    PAINTING/BASING:
The stormtroopers have more camo on them, which is a result of the fact that on infantry I do all the armour plates in camo and their carapace armour has more plates. Their right should pad is red as they are technically attached to the commissariate not the main force and only has a Legion number because they are only assmebled into squads just before deployement so that the best skills for the mission at hand are included in the squad.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing on these things.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: The miscast chimera turned out quite well in my opinion.
    Lows: Not much.

    NEXT MONTH:
More chimera, primaris psyker, ord commissar, astropath and/or Officer of the Fleet. Basically whatever I have time for after I finished the winged Daemon Prince I just started working on for my Daemons.

    Storm Troopers

    The Chimera

Chaos Marines Project Log - Just a click away... you know you want to...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 11 (JUN completed work & JUL WIP)

Give_me_a_d's All Things Chaos: June 2012

    Monthly Total: 100pts (100 Target)
    Total To Date: 803pts
    Jokers Played: 2

    Background/ Theme:
A growing warp rift has spawned a daemonic host and is beginning to attract Chaos marines

    Unit(s):
The body and legs for the Slaughterfiend (Defiler with 2 extra DCCW) that I painted last month (50pts) and the start of Ahriman (as he's a massive 250pts I'm claiming 50pts, although I've only done base colours and a bit of highlighting).

    Build/ Conversion:
As I detailed last month this is a standard defiler with some additions; the sides of the torso have been converted to ball and socket joints for the 2 DCCW, which are standard defiler claws with Khorne symbols added. The head has had berzerker style 'ears' added using the shield from an Eldar guardian weapons platform as a base. The body and legs are all standard issue so nothing fancy this month. Ahriman is the standard classic model.

    Painting/ Basing:
Very similar to last month – The SF was sprayed black then basecoated Charadon Granite and drybrushed Dwarf Bronze. The metal was highlighted with gold or Mithril silver and a bit of Scaly Green in the recesses. The grey armour was done with Adeptus Battle Grey and washed with Badab Black and highlighted with Adeptus.
Ahriman is broadly the same start as my Thousand Sons – Mordian Blue, Iyanden Darksun and Calthan Brown which is the base for gold and for the bone/brown of the horns, skulls etc. I have done more to him since I took the photo below.
A word on the base for the SF, its not finished but its made from a Gale Force 9 6-10 model skirmish tray with a meteor cut from the Planetstrike terrain on it

    Still to do:
Finish the Ahriman and the base for the SF

    Highs and Lows:
Highs: I'm very pleased with this.
Lows: It took a bit longer than I thought it would and so I've made only limited progress on Ahriman.

    Next Month:
    Finishing Ahriman

Just to prove that I have painted a second set of body & legs:

Due to some unfortunate family issues recently I'm going to have to play another Joker this month. Things should settle down over the next week and since I've just started an eight month holiday between degrees I should be able to post double points this month (and finally see the end of those damn gretchin ).

    Comment time:

@djc: Another lovely tank. I think the nearest shield (with the curved horn) looks a bit like the Tyranid artwork with the curved Ripper. Great work on the Soulgrinder too. I love the purple skin with blue armour combo.

@matt_17: You are correct - consider your Joker officially bought work! Yet more amazing work on your Guardsmen. The Stormtroopers look very special, and will really stand out from your rank and file. The banner on the transport is a nice touch too.

@give_me_a_d: Good job on the Slaughterfiend, and an intimidating pose too. What base is it on? Also, Ahriman's looking very neat so far (and I've always loved that model).

    ###

I've been quite busy this month, and have assembled the first of what will be 10 Flash Gitz. They're going to be Black Orcs with Kombi-weapons from the Nobz kit, some 2nd edition Ork Plasmaguns/Meltaguns and crosshairs/gunsights from the Boyz/Loota/Burna kits to count as Gitfindas. It was a bit of a pain to put together, and I'm not the neatest converter/green-stuffer, but now that it's undercoated I think that it looks ok.

They'll also be slightly better in 6th edition due to ignoring cover and AP1/2 being better against vehicles...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 11 (JUN completed work & JUL WIP)

As I never got around to comments last month I thought I better get in nice and early this time. So here goes...

misterboff - The gretchin are excellent, they're great models. The burnas are good as well. The flash gitz look good - nice use of bits. To answer your question about the base - its from Gale Force 9, its called a '6-10 model skirmish tray for 25mm round bases' and its just right for soulgrinders and defilers. As the name suggests it has circles cut in one side so you can use them to move a 10 man squad around. Also thanks for your comments.

djc - That's a pretty cool looking tank and I second what misterboff said about the shield. The Soulgrinder is sweet as well. Having painted 1 myself I know how much work goes in to one. the purple skin is very nice, may have to borrow that if I do another.

matt_17 - Your guard are really coming along. The infantry pics are a wee bit dark but they look good, I like the roman numerals on the shoulder pads and the power sword. The tank pic is much better and it looks really good. Love the banner.

Also - Hope you will join us next year dangermouse425

misterboff - Those burna boyz look good. Enjoy the first time someone tries to charge them, its going to be brutal.

djc - Very nice work. The chaos chimera is very pretty - a small thing though is that the multilaser barrel looks... well... solid. A black dot to fix maybe? The choice of colours on the Soulgrinder is strikingly effective.

give_me_a_d - That slaughterfiend is excellent. Good to see so much defiler/soulgrinder/slaughterfiend love in this months submissions. I particularly love the Khornate dude riding it.

    Wow... that was dishearteningly quick...

@razormasticator: Simply awesome. I love the bits of red that you've thrown in, and the rust effects look brilliant.

Glad to have you back! I'll probably start the new Tale's sign-up thread at the start of August, so everyone's got a month before the official start date.

I'm still working away at my Flash Gitz, and I've got a (final) 5th edition 1750 points Tournament this Saturday that I'm hoping to use them at. They may not be highly regarded in the competitive world, but I'm hoping the shock factor of "He's using Flash Gitz!" will work in my favour. Plus, I know there will be a fair few Marines armies and most likely Deathwing and Grey Knights too...

I've got the basecoat and wash done now, so just drybrushing and then detailing/neatening up.
