    I have been challenged...

    40K Army: Space Marines
    Hi seers,

My brother has just informed me that if I can come up with a space marine only (no allies) list at 1,500pts that can beat his sallies on the field of battle he will buy me my next army with case, dice template ect included, and has even given me the list he will me taking so I can try and plan round it...

    his list is as follows...

    HQ:
    vulkan
    MotF

    Troops:
    scout squad
10 man tac squad, flamer, multimelta, drop pod (2 combat squads)
10 man tac squad, flamer, multimelta, drop pod (2 combat squads)

    Elites:
Ironclad, 2 flamers, drop pod (1st turn drop)
Ironclad, 2 flamers, drop pod (1st turn drop)
Ironclad, 2 flamers, drop pod (1st turn drop)

    Fast attack:
    land speeder storm (scouts here)

    heavy support:
    dreadnaught, autocannon, autocannon

    total = 1,490pts

any ideas on how to take this dread heavy army on would rock, thanks

Basic SM right? In 6th ed rules? I'll assume so.

A few problems arise. You now have a maximum of 50% in reserve - as he has 5 units coming via drop pods, so he has to have at least 6 units on the ground. He currently doesn't, even if deploys Vulkan and the MotF alone.

Dreads are now a lot weaker due to hull points. Ironclads are still fairly tough (and immune to krak grenades shenanigans), but will disappear to concentrated anti-tank. Normal dreadnoughts more so. You can of course always just go with the 'screw it, multi-meltas on bikes' option, and ignore hull points mostly.

He actually has quite limited anti-tank. The tactical squads with multi-meltas might do something, the autocannon dread will, and that's... about it - so running around in razorbacks will really annoy his dreads (oh noes... heavy flamers...). He also has no AA, so Stormravens (I think you get them now? Stormtalons if not) will basically be invulnerable all game.

Take orks. Run burna boys in battlewagon or nob bikers. He can't ID them and the burna boys just claim all infantry. Lootas drop all armor and boys squads take out dreads and score. Sure te double flamers will hurt , but once they die, its game over.

O wait, marine list..... Woops. Try a bunch of hamminators with Vulcan and beat him at his own game he doesn't have a good utilization of Vulcan.

You are wrong about reserves. Units in Drop pods (and units embarked on them) do not count towards reserve limit. All drop pod forces are fine (read the Deep strike rules)

But yes I agree with Gaargod mostly - Eith take 3 Storm Talons and Zip about Shooting him with little return fire. And Multi Melta BIkes.....

Also COnsider your own Pod with say 10 Stern Guard with Combi Melats in.... combat squad when you land and pop 2 Dreads.

In Honesty that Saly list isnt great....

    Re: I have been challenged...

his list is really lacking anti tank. so load up on vehicles. 9 typhoons should give you plenty of krack shots to take down the dreads, while being manourvarable to avoid taking any hits (they seem really fragile now in 6th, even with the new squadron rules) once the dreads are down, the speeders can take apart the tac sqauds from range. Thats 810 pts.
Take min troops. scouts probably, with snipers and missles launchers. again from range take apart the tac sqauds

then dont spend the remaining points........watch his face as you crump his army with 500 opts less!!

    lol

just kidding. vindis might be an idea for heavy support. new blast rules will give you str 10 hits on the dreads, and they also kill marines with ease. so 3 of those

then you should have about 300 points left. maybe take more scouts, to claim objectives, or take some sternguard. or anything really. he wont survive 9 typhoons, and 3 vindicators......

    so:

    hq
    libby

    troops

    scouts (snipers and MSL) x2

    heavy

    3 x vindis

    fa

    3 x 3 typhoons

    and the rest as fancied.

edit: i really want to run this list, especially now in 6th. to the landspeeder shop!!

    Re: I have been challenged...

ok, so i come up with this list for my 1st 6th ed army, what do seers think?

    HQ:
    Lysander = 200
    Company command squad =50

    Troops:
Scout squad, camo cloaks = 90
10 Man tactical squad, flamer, power weapon, drop pod = 220
    Penal legion squad = 80

    Elites:
    Assault terminators = 200
    Dreadnaught, autocannon, autocannon = 125

    Fast attack:
Valkyrie, lascannon, rocket pods, heavy bolters = 155

    Heavy support:
    Thunderfire cannon = 100
Vindicator, siege shield, chronus = 195
    Hydra = 75

    1,490pts

plan is to just sit back and run my enemy down with firepower while at the same time droping my pod in to (hopefully) get 1st blood and cause problems, the hydra will provide air defence, i dont like IG at the moment, 3 vendettas is just stupid... the penal's will scout and charge causing a distraction and the valkyre is loaded up to take on both enemy fliers with it's lascannon or enemy hordes such as guard, orks, nids with 2 rocket pods and HBs

let me know if you see any holes im my defences seers

As anything in a pod has to start the game in reserve I thought they didn't count against the limit
