Best/Worst special character (fluff and gaming)

Hey guys. I was wondering who you thought was the best and worst special charcter in terms of fluff and game play in warhammer. Game wise I dont know why grimgor gets so much hate. In every game I've use him in hes never died ecxept one time when he fought alone agaist a wizard transformed into a great fire dragon. Fluffwise i guess snitch. When he comes for you your dead. No question about it. As for worst in game it might be thorgrim. HEs way to points heavy for what hes worth. Finnaly theres Hemrich Kelmer (am I spelling that right?) who, as far as I know hasnt done anything other then awakaning krell and that battle in mannfred's invasion.

Grimgor is awful landslide to follow.... I'll start the Grimgor hate, he's unnecessary and for many people ruined the end of Storm of Chaos (before the Mannfred catastrophe). I kind of like the mystic fey, so will say I enjoy Orion/Ariel and the Green Knight. Obviously the Von Carsteins too. Not many completely pointless characters in my eyes, it's just the way GW have treated some of them. Will look forward to what others say though.

Teclis the Stage Magician, Michael Jackson voice:

"Oh, hey hey ladies and gentlemen, look, it's a Daemon army over there! Can you see it? It is an actual Daemon army! Now we need someone from the audience to step forth and confirm this is all real! No fake! Actual Daemons! How about you good sir?"

    *splat EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG GGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!*

"See? Those are real! Now ladies and gentlemen, watch in awe as I wave my staff and hop around in a weird manner and do my voodoo chicken dance! Ahoooo! Wacka Wacka! And now I snap my fingers and - ALACAZAM! - they're gone! Thank you, thank you, you're too kind!"

"Uhm, excuse me Mr. Teclis, there's a Dark Elf there who hasn't paid his entrance fee and has killed the bouncers; maybe you could give us a hand?"

*Teclis guzzles magic potion, burps and puts on karate headband*

Teclis the Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger voice:

"Time to kick some serious ass! I'll be back!"

Ha! Very true. Yet ANOTHER SoC mishap. However, it does highlight my above point, it's not the character (I like the idea of Teclis), it's how GW treats them. But agreed, that was a monstrosity of an idea.

As a background character, Grimgor is dire, even ignoring his contribution to the SoC. I never really liked Valten or Luthor Huss, but I think that was personal taste. Archaon's grown on me, but I still can't see him as anything other than an Abaddon knock-off. I can't really see the point in Markus Wulfhart, but I'm prepared to give him a chance.

I think the worst special character of all time, imo, was Blind Eltharion, although not-blind Eltharion is fine.

I don't have a particular favourite, but I do have soft spots for Morglum Necksnapper, Marius Leitdorf, Scarloc, Vlad von Carstein and Malekith. Golgfag also demands a spot at the top table on grounds of seniority. I've gone off Grom and Gorbad since their latest background upgrades that seem to be trying to Grimgorise them

I haven't played a game (with special characters, at least) since 6th edition or thereabouts, so I can't really judge.

I was thinking about Eltharion actually- he was ridiculous blind but 'the Grim' is so much better. They got that change right. With Archaon, the uniting concept was great but it begs the question 'what now'? Champions who fail aren't looked upon favourably which is partly why GW presumably chose to ignore SoC outcome- makes Archaon redundant in future editions.

I agree with you because he failed horribly so he should not had anymore favor from the dark gods but GW might still had plans for him (although from what i've heard nothing has really happened seince storm of chaos)

Worst fluff-wise, the new Phil Kelly version of Manfred von Carstein. But Grimgor a close second.

Best fluff? There are so many. Gorfang Rotgut, Gitilla da Hunter, Morglum Necksnapper, Ungrim Ironfist, Gotrek & Felix, pretty much all the High Elf characters.

    Ungrim Ironfist, pre-SOC.

I like Gorfag and Skragg, I could do without Greseus.

I also like the scarab-TK-guy, from a fluff perspective

Best fluff- Oxyotl- a Chameleon Skink so good that he could survive in the Realm of Chaos.
    Best in-game- Teclis- insanely powerful.

Worst fluff- Eltharion the Blind- stupid, just stupid.
    Worst in-game- Teclis- insanely powerful.

The absolutely worst special character ruleswise is in no doubt Bragg the Gutsman. He is truly awfull. Just a normal Bruiser with a 105 point magic weapon that gives him +1 Strenght. Beside this he has Heroic Killing blow, but only in a challenge. But since he has no way of protection and even if he would get to be in a challenge, the challenger would probably kill him before he gets to strike. Fluffwise he rocks, ruleswise he is truly, truly awfull.

My favorite special Characters are both Malekith and Morathi. Both in fluff and rules. They are expensive, they are powerfull, but not too powerfull. Ruleswise it is the optional extra magic items you can give Morathi what I really like about her since it gives you the possibilities to add your own flavor to the tactics you want to handle in a game.

The best Character i have used in a game has got to be Kragg the Grimm but thats going back a long long time. Although his fluff was a little bit sparse. He was a monster in the game if you could afford him. I have always liked Ungrim to for both fluff and game wise. With my Bretonnians, if i ever pick a special character i pick The Green Knight, the guys just cool. Fluff, Model and in game wise. I dont actually think Thorgrimm is too bad in game. Though you need a huge army to use him. The few times i have used him he has never let me down. I have always had a soft spot for Ikit too, the new model is awesome as well which is an added bonus.

Well, you just lack the right spirit:

What's more, when Bragg slays a foe in a Challenge, the enemy unit is Disrupted - ensuring it cannot count its ranks towards combat resolution - a great boon for an Ogre Kingdoms army, which often outfights an enemy, but can seldom match or negate their rank bonus.

Gaming wise the worst are all the lizardmen characters, over priced and dont actually do much

Always a fan of Azhag the Slaughterer based solely on a text piece from the old OnG book (no idea what edition) where he shows sadness at the death of a young Empire soldier who stood against his horde. Also portrays him as no longer able to relate to his fellow Orcs because of his increased intellect. Much more thoughtful than the usual "increased power to unimaginable levels/fought for days/unstopabble plans" fare.

Also always loved Marius Leitdorf for similar reasons: he's an interesting multifaceted chararacter.

Personal dislikes include Archaon, Mannfred and their ilk. Super powerful and unstoppable killing machines with erudite minds and extraordinary grasps of battle tactics. Pretty boring, to me.
One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic.

That's in the 4th ed OnG armybook. He doesn't really show sadness, more like puzzlement. But yeah, that was pretty neat, I liked those short stories a lot, shame they don't put those in the AB anymore.

I'd be quite interested to read that. Its similar to how I more enjoy how Gorbad's story was told in the previous O&G book than in the current one. Any chance you could post or pm that story to me?
