    Mantic Dreadball

Looks like Mantic is making a sci-fi football game.

NYA MGE DBF11-1 DB Midgard Delvers $24.99
NYA MGE DBF70-1 DB Forge Father MVP $9.99
    NYA MGE DBH11-1 DB Trontek 29er's $24.99
NYA MGE DBH70-1 DB Human MVP $9.99
NYA MGE DBM01-1 Dreadball Futuristic Sports Game $79.99
NYA MGE DBO11-1 DB Greenmoon Smackers $24.99
NYA MGE DBO70-1 DB Goblin MVP $9.99
NYA MGE DBV11-1 DB Skittersneak Stealers $24.99
NYA MGE DBV70-1 DB Veer-myn MVP

I think this is great news. About time someone did something interesting with the fantasy football arena. Does anyone else see this is as a confirmation that GW is doing Blood Bowl later this year?

From the prices, it looks like at least a few characters will be metal, but the rest will probably be restic Plastrium (tm).

Cool, but I was never interested in football, Bloodball or otherwise, so this holds no appeal to me.

Still waiting excitedly for expansions for Project Pandora though (Zz'drzi or whatever they're called and FF would make my day!)

    Thanks, leaky distributors!

I' have been more interested in fantasy football, but this could be fun, too. Also, really hoping that this game is set in an alternate universe to the Warpath one, for obvious reasons.

If you play any of Mantic's games, check out my Battlescribe project for KoW and Warpath.

I'm sure when there is a lull in the galactic warfare due to something good actually being on the TV, all of the disparate races get together for a game of Dreadball, and remark about how those 40K ruffians can't get their act together!

    Hopefully less complicated then elfball.

yuck, unforgivably lazy in my eyes.

Yes, I know there's already Elfball and a dozen or so model companies making bloodbowl equivalent models and accessories (some fantastic, some quite ordinary!) but this really does sound weak, even if it is sci-fi rather than fantasy.

That - if there just conversions, its going to make no money what so ever as theres already plenty of superior sellers of BB-esque minis.

I sure hope so, but with the rumours dried up after the initial info hastings provided I think the chances are not great.

As for Dreadball. I'd like to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I am rather sceptical.

You know nothing about the game. If someone announced a new Napoleonic rule-set would that also be lazy and weak because there already are some?

Just wait and see is my advice.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye... and then it's just fun!

Though he propably means "I wish they'd do something GW didn't do before" you have to keep in mind that every Forum has it's share of people who 100% express negativity against everything Mantic produces. After 3 threads it's mostly clear who these people are.

That aside I am not that excited about it for fluff reasons. Alessio put a lot of work into a sinister serious looking Science Fiction fluff which got somewhat ruined by the Fantasy in Space Character and now by this Game, where somehow impossibly alien factions play by some rules in a galactic sports event.
HOWEVER I am quite excited for the gameplay itself. The switch to a Fantasy football game might be quickly done and we all know that (almost) every rule system Mantic puts out is pure gold.

Because the game would be far more acceptable, if done in their fantasy setting?
Afraid I'm not all that familiar with KoW background, but are the factions all really on such good terms?

Personally I think we should wait and see what Dreadball is. We don't even know if It's "American Football" (cough-Rugby-cough), which can make it very different to Bloodbowl, and most other fantasy sports games.

We know that the playing field is hexagon-based.

So, definitely very different gameplay to anything currently out there.

I think so. This is purely my own perspective because I read at least one >good< science fiction or fantasy book a week, but the setting of a fantasy world is almost always more dreamy, fairy tale like and more optimistic for obvious reasons (if the past got destroyed how could someone retell it?). Science Fiction Settings are in the most cases more dystopian, serve as a warning for making mistakes in the present and paint a dark gruesome "what if" scenario. In short. Fantasy settings are mostly more friendly. As of now there is not much of a feud going on between Elves Humans and Dwarves. Even the twilight kin doesn't have the GW "WE R RIP YOUR HEART OUT AND STICK IT ON OUR HORNS" gruesomeness. It is more believable to impose a sport game in this setting where even the Undead reason with the folks in a certain manner, than in Warpath where it is obviously "eat or be eaten".

Which is strange, as the rules allow the Veer-myn for example, to form alliances with the Corporation, Marauders, Rebels, Asterians and the Plague.

While there is no context for how long these team-ups last, I never got the impression any of the current well known factions in the game were completely genocidal to the other; The Corporation wants to make money, and they'll team up with whoever to achieve that. The Forgefathers seem to want to be left alone, and the Marauders want to keep their independence. The Veer-myn are the closest faction to a "rule the universe" agenda, but nothing says they won't exploit human greed (exchanging shipments of Verminium for supplies, etc) to achieve their goals, or won't fight alongside their human dupes.

Essentially, I'm not seeing any Tyranids, Orks or even Dark Eldar who consider every other race beneath them or are hostile to all life. Most Warpath factions are more along the lines of the Tau and the Imperium...

    Re: Mantic Dreadball

I can imagine the Corporation holding Dreadball games, kinda like the Roman Empire, where captive alien teams have to compete against each other and the Corps best in the Dreadball arena to win some prize. Their freedom for example.

You got me there. Perhaps it really is more to what I personally would LIKE the setting to be (Fantasy a light hearted loveable fairy tale with lot's of characters and optimistic stories and Science Fiction the opposite) and not what makes sense or not. Good points there, and thanks for expressing your points that well!
