I loved the reference in the 40k Chaos Demons to the "little girl with a dog" who got through the Tzeentchian maze by lying/tricking the demon gates. I'm not sure if that's supposed be some strange warp entity in the form of Dorothy and Toto or Alice (who maybe had a dog in the books?), or a reference to another established Warhammer character, or just a bit of weirdness. Nevertheless, it's one of my favorite bits of Warhammer fluff ever.
Hehe, as a native of Snottingham(shire), I rather like the fact that's where the Golden Throne is. As long as they've not buggered up my garden. I'm glad to see there are still dodgy puns being championed via the Orks at least. If 40k lost that, no matter how "grimdark" it's supposed to be, it would be a sad day indeed.
The palace is described as covering most of the northern hemisphere, IIRC, with the point where the golden throne is supposed to be right on top of nottingham. I like such puns, even more so because that one might very well be true if 40K were real. Nottingham used to be an actual place in 40k's far, far distant past, after all.

Golden throne in Nottigham... It's another of those interwebs truths that starts to crumble if you look it up instead of just pass on what you have heard from someone who have heard from, etc... It sounds like something GW would joke about, but there is never any presentation on where people read it...
What is often qouted as a source is an image of terra in the 4th or 5th BRB, where you can, if you really want, make out the outline of sort-of europe, and an arrow very generally pointing at "Imperial Palace" there, but it is very generally pointing, in 2d on a planet.
Every description of the palace places it a bit unspecifically in Eurasia, at least reasonably close to the main Astropath chambers, which is deffinitely and has been since, if I were to guess, but I'm not 100% sure here, first mentioned in an WD article for the precursor-game to Battlefleet Gothic, in the early 90's, the highest peak of the Himalayas hollowed out.
Was looking at the Horus Heresy Board Games (both the original from 1992 and FFG's version), which places the palace and surrounding area in a big desert... while there is a lack of defined scale there, with the descriptions of the size of the palace in various books, it simply wouldn't fit to center on the former Brittisch isles (and more specific Nottingham), even if we at a stretch could assume that the channel and eastern part of the atlantic would have dried up.

I definitely remember reading that the Imperial Palace was based in the himlayas. Never seen anything that suggested it was anywhere near the UK.
Also, as an ex-pat brummie I find the references to the 'black planet' rather amusing.![]()
Warning: comments expressed above may not mesh with your world view. Try not to let this upset you.
In various descriptions all the seas are supposed to have been "boiled away", so there'd be plenty of room. Also for example in the short story 'the last church' (a very nice story), there is mention of the 'mediterranean dustbowl', with that story taking place at the end of the unification wars. IIRC in more recent descriptions of Terra, there is/are still some small inland seas, but more or less the entirity of the planet is supposed to be urbanised. There are no more seas. There is no more ocean. The soil of the entire planet is barren and stripped of its riches. Truly Terra is a slab of rock, completely covered with enormous religious structures and perpetually shrouded with smog and exhaust fumes. It is this description of our very own Earth in the far, far future, that makes the whole concept so appealing and interesting. The idea we're going to utterly ruin and our own planet in millenia to come and turn it into a giant church, with absolutely nothing of mineral or natural value being left. It's a bit macarbe, but honestly a very intruiging concept.
When looking at the small picture of Terra on the galaxy map (in the 6th edition book on page 408), there you see the imperial palace and astronomican placed in different corners of the planet, but with the palace definately on the northern hemisphere (unless the picture is turned upside down or somesuch). According to lexicanum the imperial palace covers the better parth of the northern hemisphere, the source of this line being rogue trader.

My favourite Codex-joke was Sly Marbo (now just Guardsman Marbo).
Sly=Sylvester Stalone's nickname
Marbo=Rambo with the M and R switched
The planets Londinium, Britan, Nikea, Messina, Kaledon and countless other RT relics are named after real places.
The if you disregard all the mythological references you still have things like the forge world Metalica and the BT's holy hand grenades.
Ah yes, the holy orbs of Antioch. I love that reference.
Ha, never heard of the forgeworld metalica!![]()

It's the Legio Metallica IIRC.
According to the list on page 8 of Imperial Armour volume 1, the Legio Metalica (Iron Skulls) is based on the Forge World Metalica. Both have only one "l" in their name.
"Metalica" is the correct latin, it's the band who accidently added another L to their name.
(as far as the story goes, when they realised it they had already printed t-shirts/flyers or painted a tour bus//their instrument cases/whatever, and stuck to it... although this is the kind of story that pops up around a lot of bands with oddly spelled names)
A more obscure reference:
Lionel Johnson wrote a poem called Dark Angel about his repressed homosexuality. Ho hum.
