How it works:
Exorcists deploy in back in cover if possible and 2 feet from each side -- again, if possible.
Battle sister deploy well hidden and near each Exorcist
Retributors deploy in with the fort in the middle.
These are my back field forces. These are also what are used to take out flyers, drop MC, IC, light armor and heavy infantry.
The Battle Sister squads are there to counter outflanking units or fast skimmers zipping down the sides. Their primary function is to stay alive; secondary function it to protect the Exorcists. Since the white dwarf codex has come out, I have never lost a game while still having at least one Exorcist alive after 3 turns.
Dominions target heavy armor primarily. One or both may go into reserve for outflanking. They are ok at taking down flyers if they make their Faith and can twin-link their meltas in a pinch. I feel they are better used against tanks or harassing deathstars.
Saint Celestine goes forward up the middle as fast as possible. Her primary targets are troops and other infantry, psyker squads or anything in packs. Secondary is to be a target. She can be a target as often as she stands back up and every time she is killed, she has saved a more valuable unit from another turn.
Seraphim are 12” moving, double hitting flamer templates with re-rolls all around. They are the most reliable use of Faith Points the army has. Re-roll to wound, if faith test passed, re-roll faith test if not, re-roll invulnerable saves always. 12” jump means the templates are easy to place for maximum hits; however they will not get Hammer of Wraith if moved more then 6”. Unless you can get 3 more models total under the two flamer templates, it is better to jump in the assault for the hammer of wraith attacks.
Jacobus and Conclave do what they are good at; find and kill deathstars. Troops, terminators, anything on foot are their objectives. Walkers are their bane, however. Thankfully the axes can take down Killa cans at least but AV12 and up is out of their ability to hurt. That’s what the Repentia are for.
I follow the Conclave with the Repentia who will either counter assault after the conclave or peel off and go walker hunting. Heavy armor -- or any vehicle really -- is also a good target. The repentia are also a small, cheap unit that gets in the way and can do heavy damage if they are not dealt with. A speed bump.
Celestians are also a speed bump. They have a little transport to get them across the table quick and flamers to get the maximum amount of hits once there. They make a good harassment unit. If ignored they can put out more than their share of damage so they have to be dealt with.
All of the small units I keep small for two reasons. First is because they are quite literally canon fodder. They are sacrificial units thrown in the way of the enemy. Second is because I do not want them to survive a round of close combat if assaulted. I want the enemy on foot and in the open where the Exorcists and Retributors can cut them down.
The flexible part comes in with the Elite choices. I can swap the Repentia for another Celestian squad or vise versa. Drop both for a 3rd Troop squad to carry the flamers and spread some hunter killer missiles around. These are also what I cut for lower point games.
Over all I feel like this is a well rounded, fluffy AND competitive list. It works for my play style, at least.
