A gathering of warbands - kitbashing in the EoT

Hey folks.

This is not actually my plog, but that of my brother's. He's a veteran of about 15 years in the hobby and has collected Chaos ever since the humble crazyness of 2nd ed. Even back then he was the only one in our group to have a fully painted army (about 3K pts of chaos, i think). He also used to build our terrain, which was pretty much awesome during a time without internet resources or GW buildings.

Anyways, most of his old army has been shelved only to modernize it with current minis. Still, he was always unsatisfied about how the current CSM are plain spiky bobs and don't represent the hellish vision of them represented in their artwork. So that's when he started converting and kitbashing. Not to forget painting, as he has taken part in the last 3 german Golden Demons, although unfortunately without success.

But I know you are here because you wanna see pictures, so here it goes:

He built this Kharn for the GD 2010, because the old mini is somewhat dated. It is based on an older artwork of Kharn that some of you might be familiar with.

these are members of a chosen squad, if i remember correctly. the guy in mk v was supposed to be the champion.

@Deceit & Melchiah: thanks guys, your comments are very much appreciated. He told me he'd get more pics today, so he can show his terminators or the extremely kitbashed obliterators of his (because the official sculpts are quite uninspired).

anyways, here's some of his raptors he converted:




the later of the two is his raptor champion that he took to GD 2011 last year. i really like the agressive pose of that badboy. i think i have a pic of the painted and finished version somewhere but will have to look for it.

That is awesome. Looks based on the 3.5 ed codex art... I never really liked that piece compared to other depiction of kharn (my alltime favourite will be the 2nd ed art of kharn roaring into the sky atop a mound of naked butchered bodies). But that conversion is pretty slick. I still love the original kharn model, but this ones pretty ace.

the raptors are mostly finished with the champion being completely done, i think.

we are still kinda arguing if the squad is done or there's some stuff left to do. i think, there's still some highlights and blacklining missing, so that the overall contrast is enhanced and the minis look more detailed. especially with the amount of time spent on converting them, they lack the last bit of polish paintingwise. what do you think?

thanks for all the kind words! very glad you like my stuff. i have to apologize for the bad quality of the latest photos. my smartphone cam adds a blueish tint to them and even though i used a very bright lightsource, the minis appear to be a bit darker :/ therefore i asked my brother to apply some color corrections and i hope it works.

the raptors though are very dark in real life. some more highlights would definitely help to make them pop some more. i am very unsatisfied with the look of the power weapons paintjob. the blades look totally crappy

@lowkey: about time you showed up here, you git. something with those power weapons is off, i just can't place it right now. the tint of your mobile cam is fine though...some of those pictures are better than pics i've taken for coolmini with a standard digital camera.

@setesh: cool, thanks, i'm always in awe myself. to have that mini charge you on the board is always impressive, since it is quite massive. if i am not mistaken, kharn is slightly larger than your run of the mill marine. but i think lowkey can judge that better than me.

all in all i can't wait to see his entire army on a board and painted - most if not all units are converted one way or another and look really pretty. speaking of which, here's some more pics:

Unholy **** those are nice. He's really good with the sculpting aspect and the weathering is nothing to be scoffed at either.

Great Rhino! The skeleton parts are an awesome idea.
Also, your painted-on battle damage on Kharn and the Rhino are spot on; soo much dedication there.

the raptor with dual karambits is my favourite of the squad, too. the possessed running legs are awesome for creating some dynamic poses.

not gonna lie, i stole that skeleton idea from a painting log over at bolter & chainsword ( http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/i...ic=182215&st=0 ) that was just too awesome not to copy, hehe. but i'm glad you like it!
