    wish-listing for fallout 4

okay, so i know fallout 4 is propably still a couple of years from now, but what would you like to see in it?

here's what i'd like to see:
    - ability to play as a ghoul or super mutant. maybe expand on this a bit with different human factions as well, like coming from a vault(better educated, ie higher science and medicine skills), tribal(higher survival skill), wastelander(better repair and barter?), and maybe raider(better small guns? don't really know, ideas anyone?). maybe add different factions for super mutants and gouls, like being a first- or second generation super mutant(first gen have a bit higher intelligence and charisma than second gen, while second gen are better in combat?)
    - ability to sprint (like in skyrim)
    - ability to wield two single-handed weapons at the same time (like in skyrim)
    - more super mutants. raise your hand if you wanted to run around slaughtering evil super mutants in new vegas like you did in fallout 3. i know you could destroy marcus and his village if you wanted too, but other than that there were only a few scattered muties here and there, as well as tabithas crew.

    questions and comments?

Honestly, I'd happily see no super-mutants - they were the point where OTT sci-fi turned into silly rubbishness.

I'd also like to be able to shoot something, without hitting something that wasn't even vaguely in the line of fire.

An evolution of what Fallout: New Vegas brought to the table:
    • It won't happen, but I'd like Obsidian to develop it. At the very least, the Black Isle guys brought on as core team members.
    • Proper characters. Something that is sorely absent from many Bethesda games. This includes proper companions.
    • Faction/Reputation system. Karma is all well and good for more obscure things, but reputation is where it's at.
    • I don't want Fallout: Skyrim Edition. Sure, I do enjoy Skyrim but I want Fallout to be Fallout, not the Elder Scrolls: Nuclear Wasteland.
    • ^ That said, a leveling up system akin to Skyrim's wouldn't be such a bad thing. The same skill tree as in Fallout, along with SPECIAL stats, but skills that increase with use rather than simple points allocation. Perks should be kept the same though.
    • Traits.
    • A return to the post-post-nuclear setting.
    • Set in the mid-west. I.e, Colorado and Arizona -- the natural progression from California and the Mojave.

Super Mutants have always been a part of the series, best handled in Fallout and perhaps Fallout: New Vegas. That said, they should (and do) have a diminished role. Fallout 3 is stupid.

Fallout 3 is notorious for that. The problem was largely fixed in New Vegas, though the "True Iron Sight" function is best left off.

I am currently looking to shift a sizeable amount of Chaos Space Marine models, including Dark Vengeance Cultists/Chosen/Helbrute/Lord, Fantasy Chaos Knights, a Dark Apostle, Fantasy (Finecast) Chaos Lord, Warp Talons, Possessed and painted models with Forge World parts. Send me a message if you're interested!

yes, i agree that fallout 4 should not be skyrim: wasteland edition, but some stuff from skyrim would be welcome in fallout, such as the level-up system.

hey, crazy-idea, do you think fallout would work without a pip-boy?

I think that the Pip-Boy is good for things like the map, quest journal, radio frequencies (though I would like the option to manually tune the Pip-Boy, for 'secret' broadcasts) and other actions that it would actually be used for. It's relied upon for things that break the level of immersion, such as item consumption; on the whole, Fallout 3 and New Vegas are too menu heavy anyway which is a bit of problem, I find. Consequently, I don't think it should go completely but the way it's implemented should be revised -- it might not hurt to make it a quest related item rather than something mandatory.

It's always been there, but changing the way it's included certainly wouldn't be inherently bad.

It needs to be set somewhere which is memorable, ideally New York. This is what made Fallout 3 such an awesome game compared to New Vegas. Most of the casinos in Vegas were destroyed so you only got a few to explore, but in 3 you got to go to so many memorable places in Washington.

I'd also like the survival technique to be reworked as it is pretty useless at the moment. Hunting for food should be hard at times. Maybe have an extra mechanic that food/ warmth effects. I'd hate for it just to be something that effects your health. Ie not enough food you can't aim as well etc.

I'd also like a change from the shooting mechanic to more traditional shooters. I hate how I can't really set up a ambush with a sniper rifle. I'd like you to have less health so it would make fights more tense. Shooting someone at point blank range with a pistol should kill them if they aren't protected not slightly move a bar down a bit. Close combat needs to be changed in my opinion so you can do combos like in other fighting games.

I'd also like more hostile actions while travelling about, maybe with some cutscenes getting captured etc.

Generally I just want it to be a more hostile apocalyptic game like the Walking Dead. A place where decisions matter more then your guns .

Fewer bugs and crashes! Fallouts 3 and New Vegas plus Skyrim are full of game freezes and frame rate crawls.

I'd like to see it set in New York. Washington DC was a more interesting and varied setting than the Mojave. Overall a melding of the best of 3 & New Vegas with Skyrim.

-A definite graphic upheaval is a must!

-Enemies to react better when shot; as in reacting to where they've been shot, ie, falling over if shot in the legs, being flung back if hit in the shoulders etc. Imagine it'd be similiar to the system used in Gta 4/Red dead.

-A definite huge open devastated post/apoc landscape, but I think the games need more large scale friendly settlements, rather than one huge hub (think Rivet city or New Vegas.) This way the game could better establish different cultures and factions through the use of different enviroments/habitats. Kinda like if Ceasers camp was a city for the various followers a huge army must have.

-But also to introduce more small scale border style towns. (Haha I want it all!)

    -More, expanded factions.

    -Choice of backstories/begginings.

-Better, wider selection of clothing and character customization!

-A wider selection of guns, maybe.

So from what I've read so far; less menus, totally different leveling system, more FPS-gamey mechanics, no super mutants, get rid of the Pip-Boy? So, basically, you chaps don't want to play Fallout then?

Seeing as we're wishlisting; 3D-isometric engine, proper RPG mechanics(option to switch between real-time and turn-based), LOADS more menus, not made by Bethesda.

Nothing wrong with having few or no supermutants, the remnants of the Master's army would be mostly dead by now anyway.

Sadly a return to the roots of the series is completely out of the question. FO:NV was a big improvement over FO:3 but it still did't quite capture that Fallout charm.

I think Wasteland 2 is our best hope.

I'd like to see it drop the Bethesda Skyrim engine (which it's bound to use) and instead use something closer to Red Dead Redemption, with more inventory options and some more RPG elements added.
Otherwise I'd quite like to see somewhere completely different - China maybe, to see the remains of the other side of the war? Or something more involving the Commonwealth - would be nice to see how their technology had improved.

i tought the commonwealth was just like the rest of the wasteland, with the addition of the institute, which sounds like it's really only one small advanced settlement.

china was supposed to be the final territorium in fallout: extreme, and i think it would be hard to create a setting for that in-game.

was it chicago where the enclave had a big base? do you think the game could work being based there? or what about texas? hell, what about alaska?

Joking aside, I love Fallout and Fallout 2 (even Fallout: Tactics is quite fun), but it takes more than isometrics and menus to make a Fallout game.

Exactly. The Master's Army was driven east, splintered -- the remnants either tried to settle down, forming settlements like Jacobstown (F:NV), absorbed into existing settlements like Westside, or formed bands of marauders that have largely been culled. There aren't too many Super Mutants left.

I'm looking forward to Wasteland 2, assuming the Kickstarter is successful.

I don't think isometrics are the key thing...it's more that Fallout 1 and 2 were made in the spirit of P'n'P roleplaying games. I don't mind Bethesda's FPS action RPG sandbox style but for me it isn't really an RPG let alone a P'n'P style RPG. There's a level of depth in those original Fallout games that Fallout 3 doesn't even come close to replicating.

So in summary - Fallout 3 was a good game. But the originals (Fallout 1 in particular) are sublime.

I'm not fond of Fallout 3. Despite that, I agree with your points about P'n'P RPGs.

I don't think that Fallout 3 is inherently bad, but there are so many missteps. It's a only a Fallout game in the most superficial sense, mechanics that don't work properly, many of which are rather lazy, and the whole game lacks any kind of depth. New Vegas is far closer to what Fallout 3 truly should have been.

If Fallout 3 was isometric and more menu based, would it have been better? Hell no!

I think there's a definite divide in Fallout fans between the guys who played Fallout/2 first and often dislike 3/NV, and the new gen like me who arrived with 3. If you think about it we're kind of like super mutants
You first gens might be more clever and into your thinking isometric game, but some of you have lost your reasoning like the nightkin and hate Bethesda for no reason, where we dum dums like the visceral combat and immersion of the modern game.

    Re: wish-listing for fallout 4

And just like the Master's Army, you'll be annihilated.

If you read my posts though, I'm advocating immersion and an evolution of the series; the isometrics are quite redundant now, though Diablo 3 managed (Note: I don't like Diablo much). The combat mechanics for Fallout 3 were all iffy and so were the mechanics for resistance: New Vegas nailed it with DT, DR taking a back seat but still necessary for some things. Hell, they also got the combat to work properly. The most important factors come in the form of location and story. Yes, the D.C Wasteland had some fun areas but Fallout 3 regressed the series back to a post-nuclear setting, whereas by Fallout 2 it's post-post-nuclear. New Vegas also has proper characters with actual depth and factions, settlements and the like that actually matter.

Fallout 3 is not an evolution of Fallout 2, it's a regression -- a spin-off, it's more like Fallout: Tactics meets The Elder Scrolls.

    I could ramble on, but I won't.

I really like Fallout: New Vegas and all of the DLC. The Pitt is as close as Fallout 3 came to a gripping location/story, as far as I'm concerned -- the intro in Vault 101 was done very well though and I like causing people to explode with a 9mm pistol Oddly enough, Fallout 3 was my entry point into the series as well.

    Edit: Love your Fallout plog.
Edit 2: It's inspired me to abandon a second 40K army and begin some Fallout stuff of my own!
