    good ol' Grimgor...

    So I'm writing a 3k orc list and I think I want the big man in my list. So 1st question, is he worth the 355 points or would a warboss that I can customize better.
    2nd is the size of the black orcs, horde of 40 seems obvious to me but feel free to correct me.
    Finally is the competative level of such a unit, is that seen as a friendly option (quite a few in my gaming group have hoards of chaos warriors and saurus and other nastys)

    Cheers in advance

    Grimgor is one of the greatest hero's for Orc's IMO, He is the only character that I have had the most issues with. Stick him in a horde of Black Orcs, and Boar boys for the flanks and nothing will stop him.

    I feel that the only way to properly field him is in a horde of black orcs. I would even increase their number to 49-50, since a lot of flakk will be coming that way.

    Especially if your opponents are fielding hordes of chaos warriors, you want some black orcs alive to strike.

    he is still very vailble.. i havent faced him in a while to.. but when i see him on the tabletop its with some 40+ black orcs behind his sweet green ass kickin and rollin.

    Grimgor is a great character (even tho much much better in 7th) if u want a combat Lord. That big unit would deviate. I think the writer for 8th edition book nurffed him too much especially with all the attacks now. 7 to 5 can be a difference maker.

    I know this off topic but I still can't get over it hahaha. I mean I played a game where he himself destroyed a screaming bell in 1 round of combat in 7th edition.

    As for the idea, I think 40+ black orcs is needed. I'd probably reform to 5 wide and give the black orcs h/w shield in the 2nd round for steadfast if the enemy is wiping them out in droves

    You can make some killer warboss builds, but it's hard to beat the WS5 black orcs with hatred.

    Take him in a unit of at least 40 and make sure to have something to clear tarpit units out of their way.

    Cant switch weapons between rounds of combat but otherwise a good idea.

    Having a unit of 20-25 Black Orcs 5 wide is amazing with Grimgor thrown in there and leaves you enough points for some other dangerous things like trolls/Savage Orcs and even Some magic to help out. Hand of Gork is awsome with Grimgor as your oponent will probibly try to chaff or tarpit this unit as much as possible.

    Black Orc units must be in 35 or above to work, without it, there is little purpose to run in horde, and why not optimize Grimgor's "bunker" since Blorcs are quite a pedestrian choice without him.

    +1 WS and +hatred is exactly what Blorcs need to go from sub-elite to elite. With Grimgor I would field 35+ in horde formation. I don't think it's points well spent to to have a 300 pt "Grimgor delivery system" when the unit boost is so substantial.

    Grimgor is a good example of what a Combat Lord can do for an army, more than just a few kills a turn and a LD boost.......he actually buffs a unit and makes them a force that anyone should fear.

    +1 Grimgor

    +1 Go big with the Black Orcs or go home

    Re: good ol' Grimgor...

    Sounds good to me, I usually field tarpits of my own to help with avoiding tarpits, I have also found foot of gork to remove a tarpit or two, (46 skellys in one spell last week!) My worry is warmachines, now I run a horde of savage big uns and some trolls so they should be spoilt for choice but I think the black orcs are going to be targetted a lot, so what's our best bet for wmc hunting...

    Is papabearshane right that they can't switch weapons between round, because 2hw first round, gw second round used to work quite well

    Yes, papabearshane is right, the Blorcs choose their weapons at the "start of each combat". (P.39, OnG Army Book)

    It would be nice to be able to switch either way, but it's not possible.

    On topic though, having Grimgor in the unit makes it's easier to always go great weapon since he can do the fast kills that help reduce return attacks.

    Re: good ol' Grimgor...

    If you can afford to, an orc shaman would be a good addition too. The unit teleport spell will help prevent people avoiding Grimgor's unit and get him in contact with a worthwhile target so he doesn't spend his time chopping down filler.

    Re: good ol' Grimgor...

    I like grimgor. If special characters are allowed and you are already bringing a BO warboss, seriously consider bringing grimgor instead.

    He is pretty good value for money.
    BO warboss = 160
    2+ AS = 45 (and grimgor has a 1+ instead)
    5+ WS = 30
    ASF = 25
    +2 str = 40
    hatred = ?25 or so

    So for a BO warboss to have his abilities he would already cost 325, even if you discount the fact that his magic allowances are way off limits. So for approximately 30 points you get to make your BOs WS5 and hatred, which is a pretty good deal especially if you are rocking 40 or so of them.

    And the best thing about him? In a 2500 points game, there is still points to bring everybody's favorite SO great shaman with lucky shrunken head to sit in a SO big'un horde. You'll have 2 big units that would give anyone pause.
