Thread: Epic: No.

    Re: Epic: No.

I offered them a bunch of models that I'd made, for free. FW are not interested.

I'm miffed I missed out on an Epic GK army from FW while the minis were still available.

Dont feel too miffed - I have heard that these were out of scale with most other Epic minis, and completely impossible to not break into pieces.

Just to clear that up, SH in my post was supposed to be superheavies, rather than Space Hulk. Itīs mainly a point on what an Epic release using the new techniques could look like, if it was being done. If you laid out Orks on two sprues, you would be able to fit infantry, bikes, LVs, Battle Waggons easily and probably would have enough space to put a stompa, a battlefortress and some Fighta-Bommaz on there as well. And the same would hold for pretty much every army. So if GW was to do Epic, then I think thatīd be the way to go rather than a simple re-release (not that I would be opposed to getting Tyranid models back...).

Updated Ordinatus? Lots of variations in massive ork, necron and tyranid models? Epic-scale starships?

    Yeah, it'd be terrible. :P

Today I opened a blister of Epic:Armageddon Whirlwinds that I've had sitting in a box for a year. The detail is horribly soft yet the mould lines are deep and difficult to remove. If I hadn't bought them direct from GW I would have labeled them as re-casts. Sat next to a Mk I Gorgon from the late 1980s they look amateurish and shoddy.

They make me wonder if maybe GW currently can't really -do- Epic. I might make one more order from them to make sure I'm not overreacting. It'll be really, really sad if I turn out to be right.

The thing is the molds, because they will not have been replaced since they were made, will be in a truly terrible state by now - and thats why the casts are shockingly bad. If GW could be bothered to spend the money to refurbish the molds then the casting quality would improve.

IG Leman Russ and Space Marine vehicles of all kinds seem particularly bad.

    Re: Epic: No.

These ones had been sitting in the IGS since 2007/08 ish, so it shouldn't be age. The Epic 40,000 versions were decent... They just seem to have mucked up somewhere with the current ones when they re-cast them (the E:40k ones were plastic, right?).

Thankfully I'm working on a Nurgle force too.

EDIT: Actually, I checked. The release date on these was 2004, so possibly it could be battered molds. I was putting it down to them trying to use plastic models as masters, it is that bad. Usually old molds don't cause quite so much detail loss but you'd expect get 'flooding' where the mold material has worn away. These have little flooding but also not much detail. It could be down to the minis still being too hot when removed from the mold though, I guess.

    Re: Epic: No.

The only vehicles that were plastic in Epic 40,000 were the ones in the starter box, and I don’t think any of them are in production as metal figures anymore. The Rhinos were the old type, and the Land Raiders were… not the originals, but not the current look, either. None of the ork battlewagons or stompas are available anymore except on eBay, either. The metal figures currently available are all different. But yeah, the molds are pretty crappy.

I think they knew it would be a low-volume product so they did their best not to spend much time on it. Then it ended up doing even worse than they expected.

The Eldar tank molds still seem good, though.

    Re: Epic: No.

Yeah, I bought a couple of Eldar tanks (Falcons and a superheavy) and they seemed fine to me, although I didn't have anything to compare them to. Only problem was with the pulse lasers on the Falcon turrets. One had its muzzle about to break off (and it did) because the connection was so delicate, while one of the other pulse lasers had an unusually thick barrel.

As for the Whirlwinds, the Epic 40K ones were plastic, but they were the exposed-multiple-cylindrical-barrel sort (like the 2nd ed 40K Whirlwinds). The E:A metal ones aren't based on those.
