Re: Eldar rumour from 3++ is the new black

I asked for a citation because that is one of those weird Warseer shibboleths: an unattributed, uncited quote that gets bandied around and accepted as fact without proper scrutiny applied. Sure, this is a wargames news/rumo[u]r/discussion site and not some ivory tower, but there are times when such techniques bring real value to the discussion.

GW seem pretty keen on doing new things nowadays, if for no other reason than new things you've never seen before tend to be a little more exciting. Which is fine by me.

Re: Eldar rumour from 3++ is the new black

    GW cannibalised the FW 'spinner.

So they have done it, specifically with Eldar, and better to boot (let's not forget the Trygon either, I'm sure there are a couple of other obvious examples).

Wouldn't surprise me, what with AA eventually needing to be represented by GW at codex level for each faction (unless it's their strategy for forcing through the 'FW acceptance' thing), if they don't give the same treatment to the firestorm at some point.

Re: Eldar rumour from 3++ is the new black

The psuedo-quote about GW not stealing any more FW items is a bit dated. At the tme I imagine it as cutting into FW profits as they have a large cost for making and maintaining the molds, and that gets wasted when GW makes a plastic/cheaper version. The difference now is that there i a need for fliers and AA in every army. This was solely FW's area until relatively recently. I would like to think that they speak with the FW people and coordinate which resin molds are due to be replaced and coordinate plstic kits to cut loss. I somehow doubt thats the case though. Think GW will have to steal more FW items to give everyone fliers and AA without too much trouble. This line of reasoning may also be wh FW now gets the GW seal of approval in all games now (It was stated by FW on thier FB page I believe that the finalized FAQs will all have the 40k approved stamp and have what they count as in a standard 40k game.) They had to do something for making a cheaper version of many of the iconically FW items.

It would have made sense to have done it when they released the Nightspinner. As you say, with the AA units creeping into codexes it more likely a question of "when" instead of "if" it comes out as a GW figure. Maybe they'll end up doing a Falcon/Firestorm como box the way they have the Fire Prism/Night Spinner. Either that or they end up putting out a finecast upgrade kit to convert a Falcon or Fire Prism/Nightspinner (though I'd bet more on the combo box).

The nightspinner was an epic model first, not sure on the nightwing but I'd imagine they'd take the opportunity to do something new with the fliers- that said If Jes wants to update it in plastic I'll not argue with him!
I really do think it is highly unlikely that they would do a plastic version of Shadow spectres though as these are quite a new design by forge world and I don't think Jes is that lazy or stuck for ideas either.

The Nightwing, likewise, was originally an Epic model (as far back as the Space Marine/Titan Legions era), though it was re-done once in white metal during the Epic 40,000 era.

I think we're making a distinction between FW IP and GW IP that probably doesn't exist, all to try to prove a rule ("GW doesn't take IP from FW") that we we cannot (so far) prove exists, and that we likewise have concrete examples of counter-point against (Nightspinner, various Chimera arty pieces, etc).

The FW Nightspinner is a much better model. The GW one looks like an afterthought.

I have the FW one and I have to say I quite like the design of the GW one better, especially the tail fin.

I'd just like to add something to this thread. Went into my local GW today and the manager told me that he had to refund a guy who had ordered some shining spears from the website because they were no longer available.

The website still shows them as available but I'm thought I'd just tell you what I'd been told.

If I may venture a guess, the Shining Spears may be changed into a hybrid plastic / finecast set until the new models come out. This probably has something to do with the complete changeover from metal to resin.

That could also have something to do with the rebooting rumour

It may also have been the 3-in-a-box shining spear unit, which actually isn't available anymore (probably because you could buy it as 3 guardian jetbikes for cheaper than 3 guardian jetbikes). The single spears seem to still be available (unless the website is wrong).

I would have loved a reboot like DE got, damn autocorrect for giving me a glimmer of hope.

I wouldn't. I like the designs of current Aspects and Vehicles. Well, Aspects did have such revamps with MK II variants. But I wouldn't be that glad if the vehicles turned to such bully versions like the DE-ones - I'm also not a big fan of the DE flyer.

Re: Eldar rumour from 3++ is the new black

I agree; I very much like the mkIII and un-updated mkII Aspect Warriors (Swooping Hawks). Hell, I even still like the un-upgraded mkI Warp Spiders. I hated most of the mkII models that they've (luckily) replaced: mkII Dire Avengers, Striking Scorpions and Fire Dragons were all awful. I do like their mkII Howling Banshees, though, despite their scale-creep issue.

Other than the scale creep and the shuriken pistol/catapult redesign, I don't mind running mkI, unreplaced mkII and mkIII models together. Most importantly, I think that the current Swooping Hawks and Dark Reapers are a major improvement over their respective mkI models.

Anyway, the bit about Shining Spears is interesting. I am pretty sick of off-balance metal models on plastic jetbikes, so I'm curious to see where Jes and co. have gone with them.

@Austinitor: If rumours are correct the Shining Spears will be riding "Sky Chariots".

This would tie-in well with the Dark Eldar Raider and Ravager, which are supposed to be Ancient Eldar grav vehicles. It sounds like Jes is going for a strong ancient near east / ancient Greece theme, with strong visual themes common to both the Craftworld Eldar and Dark Eldar.
