Admech fleet needs help vs Chaos and Eldar

    Hey all,

Recently I've started playing BFG and I'm trying to figure out how the Admech(2010 FAQ list) work best in fleet building.

Right now in a thousand point I've used Lunars and a Tyrant Cruiser for Capital ships. Upgraded with the boosted Plasma Batteries, 2 squadroned Endeavors also with boosted plasma batteries (which apparantly GW doesn't sell anymore). One squadron of 3 Cobra's and one of 3 Firestorms. I have a Emperor Class battleship and a few other random cruisers and escorts laying around.

I faced off against an Eldar who basicly danced around me, I had to keep turning away to get him half into range. Whats best to counter them?

Second I faced Chaos, 4 Cruiser and a Grandcruiser with massive weaponbatteries who have a similar range or outrange me. Whats best to deal with them? Installing a lot of Nova cannons? I only now begin to find out that the Admech is actually quite restrictive in available ships.

Any advice for a beginning BFG player?

    Hi,

Yes, Eldar dance around you. Boosted batteries is a good start on the AdMech fleet. Especially on the Endeavours. On the GW site:

    Still for sale.
What you miss against Eldar is a carrier to hunt them. So build an Oberon and/or Dictator.
Doing AAF / CTNH against Eldar ain't bad. Every battery can be a death Eldar.

The Emperor is not allowed in the AdMech list. But the list has enough options. Make sure to not forget the gifts etc.

Your 1000pts is a good allround list, though personally I prefer Swords/Gladius over Firestorms.

Against Chaos: A nasty opponent, bit faster & better range. Keep it close together.

Re: Admech fleet needs help vs Chaos and Eldar

My gaming experience (so far) with BFG is pretty limited as I'm still building a fleet, but I'm not sure I see the point in taking only Squadrons of 3 Escorts - I really do look at Escorts as force multipliers if you can get them round the flanks and rear, but only in sufficient numbers to allow for casualties while they get there. Not sure I'd take anything less than 5 per Squadron and adjust the line ships to make room.

Thank you for the advice, I mostly own IN vessels now and use them as Admech. I'll save up for a few of those amazing ships .
I'm going to try larger Squadrons as well, I was thinking in the Many Small Units approach seeing there are no panic tests in this game.

I checked, both the FAQ 2010 list and the GW list allows the Admech to take the Emperor Class battleship (400 points in both lists). Oberon does seem better and a budget version of the Emperor.

I'm still relatively inexperienced, but fighting with Eldar seems to have lot to do with stuff outside the fleetlists. Pay attention to what phenominon they're putting on the table, and don't forget about scenarios. Giving Eldar an infinite amout of turns to dance around abundant planets, moons, and asteroid fields every game is probably not going to go well no matter what you do.

Re: Admech fleet needs help vs Chaos and Eldar

Thinking about what you said made me think of my noob on noob battles.

There was a lot of me thinking Chaos was going to dominate because they got an early lead and the fleets were about to reach each other...and then Chaos loses. I was thinking that was flukey luck.

But it occurs to me now that Chaos has the softest chin in the game.

Most fleets have a solid core of ships with 6+ armor up front or special movement rules so you shouldn't take heavy weapon battery fire in the face unless you really screw up, and even Tyranids have Kraken and now their special screening drone rule.

Choas however just wind up taking torps and weapon batteries up front and then fold.

So to that end you might be on to something with the Nova cannons, as that would persuade them to approach you instead of hanging back and trying to win with attack craft or carefully maneuvering to avoid you crossing the T, which is what might let you win.

I don't know about relying too heavily on nova cannons tho. Yes it can work but torpedoes tend to be more useful over all and when you do win all you will hear is how cheese your fleet is. I think I would focus more on the other strengths of the Admech fleet, range armor torpedoes etc. IMO the best bang for Admech cruisers are the Tyrants and Endeavors, both of these work great in pairs and theyre the only cruisers that fit perfectly into the 45cm range (Lunars and Gothics both fall short with their lances and the Dictator is way overpriced when you can just bring in a Dominion or Mars as reserve). I would use an Oberon with the 50pt Archmagos as the core, with advanced engines so it can more easily keep up with the fleet, a pair of Tyrants with plasma batteries and a pair of Endeavors with plasma batteries then bring in a Dominion from the Bakka list for more launch and a strong lance armament. That leaves 90 pts so add a group of cobras just for the additional torpedoes while closing and then keep them to the rear until you have crippled a ship they can hound.

5 cruisers a battleship and 3 destroyers isn't much in a 1500 point fleet, but IN doesn't typically have much more than that and with careful use you should see good results. The sheer amount of weapons batteries in the 45-60cm range should see you through any fights with the Eldar while the 60cm range on your prow/ dorsal weapons and batteries will serve you well against Chaos while your closing. You have a very large amount of ordnance for an Admech fleet also plus your ships are already well defended against ordnance attack with their additional turrets so you should attempt to take advantage of this by launching bombers and trying to force your opponent to take the defensive, even if you don't do any damage with them every fighter you force the enemy to launch is one less weapon that's being used against you. I would only launch fighters if they're launching particularly large waves and even then I would probably just try to get the Oberon into position to intercept. Once your within the 30-45 cm band you should be able to dominate by mass launching torp salvos to disrupt the enemy movements then turning your guns to them.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.
