Desert Scorpions, a Tru-Scale Space Marine Conversion Project Log

    Hello Warseer,

So I’ve decided to jump on the Space Marine Bandwagon after over 14 years of xenos in various forms. I’ve decided to keep this log as a sort of motivator.
I’ve set myself a few goals for this army
    1. The marines in power armour will be done in truescale / tallscale – whatever you prefer to call it. I will be using Guilliman’s fantastic method, though I certainly don’t have his gift for working with greenstuff.
    2. On that note, I’m going to use this project to develop my skills with greenstuff.
    3. Every model will be converted in some way (vehicles will not be done in TS lets face it, that sounds painful and for now, I don’t forsee myself going down that route.) edit 1st aug 2012: ok I changed my mind on this. At the very least the rhinos will be tru scaled - or an attempt will be made at least. As my commitment to this I attach a picture of a cut up rhino.
    4. 2000pts to be done

My plans for construction are tied into the background of the Chapter. I always like to have an idea of a back story but I tend start with an initial concept and then flesh out the specifics to build my background up over a few months rather than write it out at the start.

So I would like to introduce you to the Desert Scorpions, a Red Scorpions Successor Chapter formed during the 26th Founding in 738M41.
I love the Red Scorpions background, hate the colour scheme, but I like the chapter symbol and all the FW stuff for them is awesome, and I wanted to use some of it – the etched brass, shoulder pads, the MkIV helmets etc, so I decided that much like the Crimson Fists and Imperial Fists, this successor Chapter would retain the Red Scorpions Chapter symbol, but their colours would be a black scorpion on a field of white surrounded by a band of red. Their armour is a desert stone reflective of the sands of their home world which is a largely covered in arid desert. Squad leaders/commanders wear red helmets, veterans wear black.

The broad outline I have so far for them is that they initially had a lot of success on the Eastern Fringe following their initial deployment and took part in a number of successful campaigns earning themselves a strong reputation for precision well planned strikes. Through circumstance, they were petitioned to aid a number of worlds over the course of a few decades which were experiencing civil revolts which ultimately were found to be the result of Genestealer Infestation Cults. This gained them experience and reputation as Tyranid Hunters. At the dawn of the 9th Century M41, they were petitioned for aid to prevent a vital system from being destroyed by a Tyranid Hive Fleet. Six full companies were committed to the fight and through exceptional sacrifice, the system was saved, the hive fleet crippled and routed. However, well over 500 battle brothers were lost during the fighting. Reduced to less than half strength, the Chapter set about the long task of rebuilding.

Now the way I intend to incorporate this into the force organisation is that I will be making heavy use of Scout Squads and so I guess that’s a good place to start

Planning to have a lot of scouts in the army is problematic for two reasons

    1. Scout Kits suck. Seriously, they are just poorly designed kits… so static.
    2. What’s up with the heads??! They all look like they are on steroids.

So first order of business is to find them some helmets to hide the ugly. I’ve seen a few people use the Elysian Helmets from FW and I really like the look of them, so I ordered some and once the arrived I set to work on my scouts.

I’ve also added the chapter symbol from the brass sprue to the left shoulder.

Nice looking scouts, good change from the stock kit. What a shame, the old metal scouts were quite good, but the current plastic ones really suffer from the no neck problem. Glad you've decided to correct it, interested to see your true scaling

Thanks & I couldn't agree more. I loved the old metals, I'd happily take finecast versions of the metals in place of these plastics. Pity I never bought some metals.

Small update - I've managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of painting today.

First though I had to re-examine the squad leader & the blade by his hip. I decided he looked a tad too relaxed and that really wasn't the look I was going for. Moving the blade arm up makes him look like he's waiting to receive a charge.

Hmm, looking at the photos I think that blade needs to be facing the other direction

Sorry about the picture quality - I'm just using my phone until I can find my camera... it's around here somewhere

A friend of mine gifted me an old metal version of Sergeant Telion a while back so I dug him out of the bitz box and made a couple of additions - he'll make a good squad leader.

Tried my hand at greenstuff with the tru scale marines. Sculpted a tabard and a small cloak-tabard type thing on another. This is the first time I've ever tried to do cloth in greenstuff so I am reasonably pleased with the results and I learned a couple of tricks for the next time, and thats the important part.

I have a full tactical squad assembled and am in the process of painting - updates to follow.
