Just starting Nids and space wolves

Myself and a friend are just starting to get into 40k, we've both picked armies with models we like, have picked up the books, and are now looking at where to go from here model wise.
The tyranid player has aquried 10 termagants with devourers, 10 termagants with fleshborers, 5 genestealers, 10 hormagaunts
3 warriors, 1 licter, 1 ripper swarm, and a home built parasite that I think is way to small.
The space wolf player has nothng, but we've been proxying with 2 sets of the space marines from the starter set.
In the end we'de both like to play competivly, but really are not sure what a good base of models is to start with. Any help would be very muchly apreciated.

It depends whether you want to play with what you like or to play with what is competitive i think . Its a debate that has been raging for al ong time i think. IF you dont plan to play tournaments just build the army based on what you like the look of in the book. As long as you have 1 hq and 2 troops the rest is up to you. I really like Tyrants for example so i always run at least one while a lot of people prefer tervigons for hq etc. FLying tyrant with 2 twin linked devourers is pretty cool. I like shooty tyranids lots of barbed stranglers large blast aoes , biovores artillery but biovores are rediculously expensive now 25 pounds for each resin kit.
Space wolfs thunderwolf cavalry and fenrisian wolves are pretty cool but not sure how competitive these are.

I know we'd like to be able to play at tournaments and stand a chance. The space wolf player really likes the wolves, soI'm guessing he's getting them one way or the other heh.

I would read the relevant tactica threads for each of the armies they give a good breakdown of most units. But id buy what id enjoy painting and liked the look of since rules change and whats good in 1 codex might be be bad in another but if you like the models playing with those wont stop being fun. I would avoid pyrovores though for the tyranid player they just suck in every possible way.

For Wolves, you should start with 3 squad boxes. You can build 2x10 Grey Hunters and characters/Wolf Guard with them and if you can get some heavy weapons, even a squad of Long Fangs. IF you mix in your Starter Set Marines, you even get more nice Space Wolves.
I think the Army Box isn't bad either, owning 1-3 Drop Pods is never wrong and scouts aren't bad either. The box says it includes 10 Grey Hunters and 10 Blood Claws, but as both use the same sprues it SHOULD be possible to do 20 Grey Hunters instead. Avoid Blood Claws in the beginning. Once you know the game and your Codex, you might get some if you like them, but for a beginner Grey Hunters are more forgiving to use. If you want some Melters, you can order the old Space Wolves Accessoire Sprue from Mail Order.
