@Violenceha Heh, I'm actually giving that a go right now

Currently in my 'to paint' bracket is:

    4k point guard army.
£160's worth of grey knights, still in boxes.
    2k Khorne army
    4k Fantasy Chaos army

and thats after listing 3 armies and half of one of my bitzboxes on ebay.

Its a good point that poverty inspires us to pick up old projects rather than buy new. I know that if i didn't have my current guard army to work on, i'd recondition an old one over buying again and I think thats a great trend, maybe not for the industry but definitely for army diversification. I've put up for sale a load of armies because I think that i'm paying too little attention to too many things and the quality is suffering because of it. My ratio is something in the region of 20/80 in favour of unpainted now, and 40/60 in favour of still boxed.

Because of this slimming, I don't dread the shinny now. Because I know i'll just buy what will work, rather than everything in a range and do nothing with it. Of course, thats easy to type now. Wave new beserker models or new guard of any kind under my nose and i'll buy it all with the proceeds of my kidneys.

If it weren't for my local club starting up Infinity and me falling in love with the miniatures, I'd have four models left to paint right now. As it is, I have a whole Nomads force (20 or so models) to paint, which will last me for quite a while at the rate I'm going.

That being said however, I'm very much in the minority in my local area: most of the people I know own many more (or, many many many more) unpainted or even unassembled miniatures compared to painted ones, and only some of them are even attempting to change that fact!

I honestly have no idea. My vote is on "more than 250", but I guess it could very well be "more than 2500".

A ridiculous amount. I've actually started paying people to paint for me because

    1. It's less time consuming for me to just dump a load of models on someone and say "take your time".
    2. I hate painting and I'm not any use at it
    3. It bumps up the cost of models to the point it makes me a bit more money savvy.

Saying all that though, that was only recently so I have far too many thousand points and armies that are sitting waiting for their treatment.

How much I've left to paint?

    Full armies!

Less than 50, but only by one or two. I have the entirety of the Space Hulk box to paint up, plus a box of Mandrakes, a Talos, one each of the Court of the Archon models, the Dark Eldar Prisoner slave girls, the 25th Anniversary marine, and a Raider which is presently half-finished.
Though my guards may sleep and ships may lie at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I'm actually pretty shocked at these numbers... I thought I was bad with about 40 unpainted models!

Re: How much stuff have you got to paint?

As an Ork player I had a really bad habit of buying boxes for bits or scouring bits sites for the odd part that may come in use at some point. While I do have somewhere nearing 5k points painted to pick from for 1.5k+ games, I've still got enough sprues and bits left make a few more armies! Apart from a small Necron force I've started a few months ago I've only been buying the odd box every few months...

How long have you been wargaming? My lead mountain has been growing now for over 20 years and shows no sign of stopping...
My real problem is a) never staying focused on the same system for very long, b) "needing" to have a substantial (if complete is not possible) collection so as to have at least some of each army/faction and c) ebay. It's just so easy to buy tonnes and tonnes of stuff very quickly there.

Probably around a hundred in total. That said, it varies a lot since I often buy lots of boxes and then spend months painting them.

    Far, far too many.
I have a 'collection database' that can give some exact numbers on that. Of 905 figures, 268 are fully painted - 30%. I'll admit to feeling slightly reassured by how common this sort of thing is, however!

I've thought about making one of those, it seems like it could take a very long time though...

Not that long, I must admit - I've had my models for about 3 years. I have managed to restrain myself from buying any more, so there's that as well.

It's when that restraint is lost it all starts to accumulate. I admire anyone who can buy, paint and refuse to buy more until they have finished painting. I just occasionally get flashing images of myself diving into piles of unpainted miniatures like Scrooge McDuck in Ducktales...

It's surprisingly straightforward Essentially it's just a long list of models with some 'type' fields and some behind the scenes formula to do all the percentage maths. Though doing the inventory of every model I owned was a little time consuming, yes.

It was originally intended to motivate me into getting stuff finished, but it unfortunately has not greatly succeeded!

Thank you very much I am rather pleased with it. Though I should mention that there's a small Kings of War Abyssal Dwarf force and a handful of Undead regiments I managed to miss that bump the 'unpainted' percentage up somewhat...

Re: How much stuff have you got to paint?

I own around 1250-1300 models, of which 800 have paint on them? In terms of paint jobs I'm totally happy with, the figure is more like 600, and alot of those are probably quite a bit below my current standard (which I think is a problem for a lot of people!). I used to have a full list but I lost it when my computer died on me a year or so ago and have never got round to making it again. For now I just worry about keeping on top of the models I buy to not make the unpainted pile any bigger!
My random painting log: HereBeDragons' Paintathon

    Painting target 2012: 212 models. Number complete: 212 !!!!!!!!

Models to paint this year (2013) so far: 266 Number complete: 16

Re: How much stuff have you got to paint?

No £ = not buying new ''shinies'', scratchbuilding instead.
Not gaming = no reason to paint stuff and finish armies.
Plus, my painting skills are pretty bad anyway = lack of motivation to ruin yet more models.
So will be stacks and stacks. Not vast armies of one kind, but still feels like way too many:

I always said 'no' to an Ork army, now I have a 1500-ish pts Waaagh and growing as I scratchbuild more stuff (like my dakkajet).
I used to like Chaos, never got into them though, now I have enough for a 1000point army with lots of scratchbuilds on the way (like my much-neglected DefilerPod and FiendGrinder + 2 Superheavy projects).
Some Space Wolves (may get enlisted into the Chaos Marines depending on what their CSM Codex looks like).
Trying to make a Doomsday Ark Deathmark (no idea why, just for the heck of it, no other Necrons).
A fair few Eldar (incl. a Bright Stallion + Aspect Warrior Wraithlords) & some Dark Eldar cousins (+scratchbuilding Baron Sathonyx).
I have plenty of Lizardmen (incl. about 5 Stegadons + 3 Carnosaurs), but I don't like the idea of Slann/frogs and the Core choices seem pretty limited, so I have no idea when those will see daylight.
I am urgently trying to contact any living relatives of Sam 'Jock' Wilson, KIA 10.06.44, UK army service id 2764432, from Morley, West Yorkshire, England. Served with Black Watch Regiment & No.6 Commando.
