    1000 pts intro to DE

    40K Army: Dark Eldar
Hey all, I wrote up an inventory of dark eldar units that I've gathered over the past while, and threw them into a list. This is my first list for Dark Eldar ever, so I'm looking to find out what I need/don't need and all that jazz. I'm coming over from playing guard for almost 10 years, so I'm looking for a completely different looking army than Gaunt's Ghosts.

Anyway, take a look, tell me what you think:

    Archon
    Huskblade (lance)
    Combat Drugs
    Soul Trap
    Shadow Field
    Blast Pistol
    160

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Sybarite
    Dark Lance
    Blaster
    Venom Blade
    145

    Raider Transport
    Retro Jets
    Chain snares
    Splinter Racks
    Flickerfield
    Aether Sails
    95

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Sybarite
    Shredder
    Splinter Cannon
    Venom Blade
    120

    Wyches
    x10
    Hekatrix
    Hydra-Gauntlets
    Razor Flails
    Venom Blade
    Phantasm Grenade
    145

    Raider Transport
    Retro Jets
    Chain Snares
    Splinter Racks
    Flickerfield
    Aether Sails
    95

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Shredder
    Splinter Cannon
    Sybarite
    Venom Blade
    120

    Reavers
    x3 66
    Heat Lance
    Cluster Caltrops
    Arena Champion
    Venom blade
    113

    Total: 998 pts

EDIT: Oh and of course, my evil plan is to stick the archon with the wyches in the raider, possible deep strike it and get them into combat as soon as possible. I have one squad of warriors in a raider with dark light weapons to go possible vehicle/tough people cracking, and two ground warrior units to go shredding swarm infantry types. The Reavers are there to either go vehicle hunting if they need to, or to just bladevane everyone to death.

Alrighty then, my opinions are as follows:
Archon - Do whatever but keep him cheap, he is one model witha horrible toughness (instant death be wary of), consider a Haemonuclous because he is cheaper for what a HQ will do a 1000 points.

Warriors- You have 30 warriors, 30 T3 guys who melt in in front of bolters, not ideal. Your paying way too much for what your gonna get from these guys. Also your sybarite, while he may look good on paper, wont add as much. In the grand scheme of things, two 2+ wounding attacks is not worth the 15 points your paying. I would advise breaking your squads into 5-man squads with a single blaster. That means its only a 60 point squad, and it can suffer an unfortunate mishap without ruining your game

Raiders- You dumping too many points into a vehicle that can now be glanced to death by bolters. 95 points is almost 10% of your army, or 1/10 for fraction lovers. I'd suggest changing the warriors transports (if above advice is followed) to Venoms with splinter cannons. I think about 12 poisoned shots a turn is quite good against anything thats not a vehicle.

Wyches- These girls are nice the way you have them, you could consider dropping one to fit your HQ in there so he isn't kicking about on his own. Always give these girls raiders for transports

Reavers- Keep them like this but your arena champion is gonna be near useless so drop him to use points on other things. Consider bumping the squad up to 5-6, in which case you should decide whether you want them to be shooty (add blaster/heat lance) or speedy (add caltrops or grav-talons) but if you do both, they get too expensive

Other units- If you follow above advice, you may find you have extra points in which case you must consider your wallet, and the codex.
Razorwing, its 6th fliers are good, this option will give you a unit that can be safe from ground shooting, and can deal with opposing fliers.
Ravager, another Heavy option that is cheaper than the Razorwing, but doesn't get in on the fun flier rules.
Scourges, infantry that can do anti tank quite well, just don't put a solarite on them
Trueborn, give them 4 blasters and a Venom and thats 175 points ready to kill lots of vehicles

Thats all from me, it is 1 AM where I am at so my grammer may suck, but I could care less

    EDIT: points value check

    EDIT: points value check

Alright, since for the most part you guys echoed each other, here we go.

This is how I write lists, I put what I want in them on each model then proceed to have everyone tell me what I need to trim down. It helped with my guard army a lot, so I figured I'd still do the same here. I trimmed everything down as you said, but I think for a while at least, I'm going to keep the warrior squads at the same size. For this points size, I'm planning on the shredder cannon units to be the static fire base, while the unit with the dark lances in the raider could easily take out any vehicles that I might come up against, and then go unit hunting if needed. I trimmed the needed witch to put my shiny new haemunculus in the unit. But I'm not sure if the equipment on him is good, or if I should go with something different.

    Anyway, here's my new list.

    Haemonculus Ancient
    Stinger Pistol
    Scissor Hand
    100

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Dark Lance
    Blaster
    130

    Raider Transport
    Splinter Racks
    70

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Splinter Cannon
    100

    Wyches
    x9
    Hekatrix
    Hydra-Gauntlets
    Razor Flails
    Venom Blade
    Phantasm Grenade
    135

    Raider Transport
    Splinter Racks
    70

    Kabalite Warriors
    x10
    Splinter Cannon
    100

    Reavers
    x3
    Heat Lance
    Cluster Caltrops
    98
Now, this trims the final list total to 803 points. Since I'm trying to buy the stuff for this army in the opposite way that I did with my guard, which has left me with bucket fulls of guardsmen I won't use any time soon, what would you guys recommend for beefing this up to say, 1500 pts? I'm thinking at least I could take a unit of true born to for hard tank cracking, and that would let me drop the dark lance in the warrior squad I have, but I'm not too sure yet what's good and what's useless in this codex.

Thanks for the help so far

Re: 1000 pts intro to DE

Your new list looks better, I only really question the 20 Warriors with no transport, but they're fine for sit back and shooting. Also, on your wyches raider, switch splinter racks for a flickerfield or night shield (with the new Jink save, a night shield might be better), reason being is that you want your Wyches in combat, not shooting out of a paper airplane.

As for what to buy, most everything in the codex is well priced and balanced, Trueborn will help with Anti-tank, Razorwings are good, 2 of them will make your opponent have to choose which to shoot and gives you 8(!) Large blast Templates to drop on your enemy. Incubi will deal with Terminators, Inflintrating Mandrakes with a haemonculours will give you 10 S4 AP4 pinning attacks on whatever it sees. Scourges and more Reavers are good, and Beast masters are also well worth their price. What I would avoid would be: Wracks, they're going to end up costing more than what they're gonna do, both in terms of points, and money wise.
Grotesques, same thing as above, and you need a Haemie to keep them sane
Hellions, with the new WWP nerf, these guys are worse off than before, they'll die to shooting before being able to do anything worthwhile

    Good luck!
