From trash to treasure lizardmen, agROOK's quest for lustrian glory!

Hello all you warriors and seers, Im agROOK, also know as wysematt2222, and I figured I would start up a log of my current project, fantasy lizardmen. I have recently grabbed around 4000pts of lizardmen from my friend for a few hundred bucks, and there is only one painted model in the whole bunch. Quite a few of them are already assembled and played with, so this should be quite the challenge!

First, a few quick pics to show what Im dealing with.

My painting setup is a fairly simple folding table in front of a big screen. As you can see, the models are either still on the sprue (preferred) or assembled, shields and all. Im planning on playing this army in a tourney in November, so Ive got about three months to get it painted.

The rundown is as follows, estimates on most of it as I have yet to go through each sprue and count what is there:

    40ish spear saurus, already assembled.
Upwards of 30 to 40 un-assembled saurus still on sprues.
20 assembled temple guard, at least another 20 on sprues.
    2 assembled scar vets.
    An un-assembled metal slann.
2 metal salamanders, assembled; with three handlers apiece.
3 unassembled (broken) terradon riders, one with a missing tail. These I will probably just trash, Im planning on converting some riders as these models are some of my least favorite in the gw range. Ill post the conversions here.
One stegadon, painted, without howdah or any riders. Probably will be ignored.
An un-assembled stegadon with howdah/engine of the gods.
15 un-assembled cold one riders still on sprues, including terrible looking old plastic cold ones.
5 cold one riders converted over to the new dark elf plastic cold ones.
20 assembled skinks, some with blowguns and some with shields and javelins (?), 20 un-assembled still NiB.

So thats roughly the project. Get a ton of stuff painted up, while playing practice games, including scratch building three teradon riders, all before November rolls around.

My first color scheme trial coming up in a few minutes.

    Wish me luck!

    *** UPDATE 7/25 ***

I went through the sprues, found an additional stegadon(!) and about twenty more saurus than I thought were there. I also found some extra hand weapons, so some of those spear saurus may be getting a visit from the arm transplant fairy. Surgeon? No, I think I like the idea of an arm transplant fairy, very morbid original grimm's sort of thing. Though I guess she would be taking arms from dinosaur men, so really this seems more like the nightmare of my six year old son, but I digress.

Ok, heres my first quick update.

A few trial picks using a pretty simple painting scheme. I want a bright lizardmen army without resorting to alert colors like blue or bright red, and I think green lizardmen is sort of played out. I am going for a brown, bone and maroon accent color scheme. My metals will be gold, but I am going to try and substitute a jade or emerald look as much as I can.

Lighting is not the best, Ill take better photos in white light once I settle on the color scheme and have a finished model.

A little bonus, one of the converted cold one riders. I am considering doing some greenstuff work on it to bulk the cold one up, the saurus riding it is just so large in comparison.

Looks like you got a good deal and your test model is looking nice. Good luck getting it all painted.

Ok, so only a little work on the lizardmen last night. My best friend is starting to paint his chaos army for the same tournament I am, and he asked me to do a demo of a two weapon khorne chaos warrior for him. This is what I came up with.

Again, sorry about the lighting, there is literally no good light in my entire house, so you get some nice kitchen pictures. Lay off my hand sanitizer

The shield is highlighted with Macarius orange, though the highlighting doesnt show up very well in the photos. I tried to go for an emerald/jade look on the spear tip, Im pretty happy with the overall effect. Im positive I could achieve the look to better effect, but the time investment would be more than I would want to put into rank-and-file right now. Once the army is complete, I can come back and re-finish it, especially considering the time constraints.

Let me know what you guys think, I could use some advice. Im a little worried that the scheme is too simple to look like I put time into it.
