Thread: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

  1. #21

    Re: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

I dislike the idea of soul grinders (model wise) in fantasy - to me the model looks far too out of place with the current aesthetic. Yes I realize bloodcrushers have mechanical legs and the empire has a steam tank but all of those examples have tuned their "technological" appearances into a fantasy aesthetic. The bloodcrushers are not machine melded with biology; those elements are kept separate. To me the crushers look more like animated bodies of metal. They're of arcane/mystical daemonic construction rather than an actual futuristic sci-fi battle robot or bio-mechanical horror that the soulgrinder is. And the empire steam tank is more steam punk fantasy technology rather than an actual (futuristic sci fi) tank. Those details make all the difference for me. Otherwise the soulgrinder looks cool for what it is. Anyways, feel free to grind souls if you must, bwahahahaha.

    Re: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

I gave it a "bad move" vote.

It's not a terrible move from GW's standpoint. A lot of fantasy playing kids will now buy the soul grinder as well. Not that there are that many but still...
But... I wouldn't have minded much if it had looked a LITTLE more like the Bloodcrusher, or whatever that thing is called again. That thing is still too mechanical for my taste, but it does kind of fit... and so would have the Soulgrinder... but it doesn't look fantasy science, it looks like regular robotic science, so...

Well that reply seems to have ended up in the wrong thread somehow....or you changed your original post and now my reply doesn't make any sense.

In anycase, I like it a lot now its in fantasy.
It always struck me as quite absurd that 40k daemons got something fantasy didn't when they shared the same models for everything else.

The only downside is going to be all the 40k players using their own unbased soulgrinders alongside their round based "fantasy" daemon armies and the subsequent arguments that will ensue as they try to take their 40k way of measuring on top of the lack of a base.

Its about as asthetic as a hellcannon was in the WoC army. That was "we'll shove a kick ass war-machine into the army, then we'll dress it up in a chaos'y monster suit so that it might look like it fits in"

The Soul Grinder in fantasy "debate" reminds me of this:
"More! More! Yeah, bravo! It was wonderful! It was great! Yeah, it was GOOD actually. Well, I liked alot of it. Well, there were parts of it I liked! Oh, yeah? Well it wasn’t that bad. Horrendous! It was terrible! That was the worst thing I’ve ever heard! Boooo! Boo!"

With the right paintjob they'll fit right in.

The model as is no! But it is chaos so with a spawn mash up or the like it could fit well...

    Re: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

Certainly a terrible and thoroughly lazy move, the Soulgrinder simply does not fit into Fantasy without modification. It is very clearly a 40k model, and needed at the least an additional sprue to 'Fantasify' it. Cynically, to me it just looks like a cheap trick to try and sell more of the kit.

I personally don't like the model too much and neither do I see it fitting into WFB. For me it screams "40k"...

So when do we get the Giant (once upon a time absurdally overpromoted) in 40k? Come on, it is clearly an abhuman...

Just an interesting polling tidbit. As of right now, with just over 100 votes, we're sitting at about 20% for each of the five options.

    Re: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

From an aesthetic POV, it does seem a bit too mechanical and out of place for WFB, especially when you compare it with things like the Blood Slaughters and the Blight Drones, which I think would have fit better into the WFB Daemon army.

I voted neutral, because it is being repackaged and I'd like to see what they may include to make it look more biological, in addition to what normally comes in the box, before passing final judgment.
"From the fires of betrayal, Unto the blood of revenge, We bring the word of Lorgar, The Bearer of the Word, The favored son of Chaos; All praise be given unto him, For those that would not heed, We offer praise to those that do, That they might turn their gaze our way, And gift us with the boon of pain, To turn the galaxy red with blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods." - Excerpt of the 341st book of the Epistles of Lorgar.

    Re: Soulgrinders in Fantasy

I think it's a good move considering the trend to bring large plastic kits to each army as they are re-done, daemons needed something but does seem quite lazy just to port the Soul Grinder. Still, gives me an excuse to buy the FW Plague Hulk

i like the idea, even with power armour stuff added to it .

Reason: if im correct the realm of chaos exists outside space and time, thus totally justifying it.

That's what I think too. Even with slight conversion work and the right paint job it will fit right in I think and actually looks pretty awesome next to the Bloodcrushers. I think the Soul Grinder would look good painted up like a Khorne daemon with blood spattered brass legs.
