Thread: DE Wych Tactics

    DE Wych Tactics

I ran mostly wych units in 5th, and i think that the models are so much better looking than warriors. I was wondering what tactics people have been using in 6th edition for just their wych squads. Right now I'm looking at running a 5 wych unit in a venom for every 10 wych unit in a raider, for support, taking the overwatch hit before a charge, and dealing with enemy AV. It's worked well so far, but 6th is still new and things are always changing.

I wish I had something clever to say about how dark elves aren't technologically advanced enough to run the units in question (partly because I don't know wtf a wych is), but I don't. I'll just say that this is fantasy, not 40k.

Welcome to Warseer, or as it's nicknamed, Whineseer.

I've yet to play a game with my Dark Eldar for 6th yet, but I think Venom's aren't going to be so hot, as being only HP2. Open-topped, armor 10 isn't going to go so far. Fortunately jink and maybe the flickerfield will help. I'm not too sure yet, perhaps a veteran will come around soon.

A buddy of mine runs his dark elder often. so luckily i can give a bit of advice. wyches are your new anti-tank unit. give them all haywire grenades and load them up in a raider. put sails on the raider and book it down field as fast as you can. The jink save will normally be enough to get on of your units there. where I've seen this very effective is on those pesky fortified units sitting behind a defiance line. hit that line hard and you will cripple your opponents force with one blow.

A tiny unit of Wracks are going to better and cheaper for taking the over watch hit then a supporting wych squad.
Wyches are good at cutting up infantry with no armour, or very small units of armoured guys (ie. so small that they won't get to hit back). Vehicles too are an easy target if they have haywires grenades. Hitting on 3's at worst, 2+ is a glance. Even a 4 or 5HP (do they even exist?) vehicle is gone after a unit of 10 hits it like that.

I think venoms are still good for supporting fire and most importantly getting the units where they're needed most. Opened top is good as it allows them to assault out of the vehicle.
They get shot down easily but if you keep 'em moving they're harder to get and you can quite easily take a lot of them. Plus they've got bigger juicier targets like raiders/ravagers or big gangs of reavers coming at them, mandrakes coming from behind etc I don't think venoms would even get too much attention.

5 wyches with haywire grenades can destroy practically any nonflyer vehicle in one turn (though they might need a bit of help against walkers and 4 hulpoint vehicles).

For larger squads you probably want a haemonculus to supply a paintoken. But this with shardnet and impaler makes them decent tarpits they might not kill a whole lot in one turn but they will not suffer a lot of casulties either, and are now even more resistant versus power weapons with 4++ and 5+ fnp.

Don't discount venoms yet. It's dependent on your meta though. They will still tear new holes when facing any MCs. With their high volume of shots, they work well against FMCs too. Discounting them is like saying rhinos suck because they're not as good or resilient as they used to be. They're still good and have been given nerfs just like any other vehicle. Their points are still justified. With the increased emphasis on infantry, venoms will do just fine. What you put in them is a whole different discussion.
